  • Tyrell Jenkins: Released by Padres

Jenkins was released by the Padres on Friday, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Jenkins played 17 games with Triple-A El Paso this season, posting a 7.76 ERA with a 1.99 WHIP during the course of 82.1 innings. Although he provided eight starts for the Braves last season, Jenkins was unable to find a role in San Diego's rotation, and will look to latch on elsewhere.

  • Padres' Tyrell Jenkins: Outrighted to Triple-A

Jenkins was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday, Dennis Lin of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

With Carter Capps (elbow) reaching the end of his rehab window, the Padres cleared room to activate the reliever from the 60-day disabled list by dropping Jenkins from their 40-man roster. The 24-year-old Jenkins once held some promise while he was coming up in the Cardinals organization, but walks have been a major issue for him in the upper minors and during his eight-start run with the Braves in 2016. He's delivered a 6.71 ERA and 44:41 K:BB over 61.2 innings at Triple-A El Paso this season.

  • Padres' Tyrell Jenkins: Optioned to Triple-A

Jenkins was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Monday.

Jenkins was fantastic in Triple-A for the Braves in 2016 (2.47 ERA over 17 games), but he struggled upon promotion to the majors. As he still had options remaining, the Padres had little reason not to claim him off waivers and give him a shot at making the club out of spring training. The big question will be whether he can ever figure out his control -- Jenkins walked 33 batters in just 52 MLB innings last season, and no matter how many ground balls or strikeouts he induces, that 5.7 BB/9 just won't play.

  • Padres' Tyrell Jenkins: Bullpen an option

Jenkins is no longer in the running for one of the final rotation spots in San Diego. He will compete for a long relief role this spring, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Jenkins -- who was claimed off waivers -- was vying for a rotation spot, but a shaky start to the spring (7.20 ERA over five innings) has reduced his opportunities to a bullpen role. The athletic pitcher didn't have much fantasy buzz as a potential starter, and now he can safely be ignored with his Opening Day ceiling being a middle reliever.

  • Padres' Tyrell Jenkins: Shaky in second appearance

Jenkins had a rough outing Saturday, giving up three runs (two earned) on two hits while walking four and striking out none in 1.1 innings of work.

This was a huge step backward after his first appearance on Monday, when he threw two clean innings. Jenkins is an athletic pitcher, but the results just haven't been there for the 24-year-old (5.88 ERA in 52 big-league innings last season). He is being given a chance to compete for a rotation spot this spring, but he can't have more outings like Saturday's if he wants to keep his slim chances alive. A move to the bullpen could be an option, but he would only gain some NL-only value if he cracks the Padres' rotation.

  • Padres' Tyrell Jenkins: Will compete for starting job

Jenkins (elbow) will compete for one of the Padres' final two starter spots, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Jenkins went on a carousel of getting DFA'd and claimed this offseason, but the Padres decided to take a chance on the former top prospect. Manager Andy Green has already told the young pitcher to "go back to being an athlete," implying that the Braves tried tinkering with his delivery too much. Jenkins will compete for one of the Padres' final spots in the rotation, but he could also make the 25-man roster as a long or middle reliever as well. Even if he makes the club as a starter, he will have to show immediate improvement over last year's 5.88 ERA before fantasy owners take notice.

  • Padres' Tyrell Jenkins: Claimed off waivers by Padres

Jenkins (elbow) was claimed off waivers by the Padres on Tuesday, the San Diego Union Tribune reports.

The Padres are Jenkins' third organization in less than a month, as he was most recently claimed by the Reds last month after being DFA'd by the Rangers. The former top-100 prospect made his big league debut in 2016, posting a 5.88 ERA with 33 walks and 26 strikeouts across 52.0 innings for the Braves. Jenkins spent time as both a starter and a reliever last season, and it's unclear exactly how he fits in San Diego's long-term plan. Jenkins dealt with ulnar nerve inflammation in his elbow at the end of last season, but he's expected to be ready when spring training arrives.

  • Reds' Tyrell Jenkins: Claimed by Reds

Jenkins (elbow) was claimed off waivers by the Reds on Friday.

The Rangers tried to send Jenkins through waivers after acquiring him in a trade with the Braves, and unsurprisingly, they were unsuccessful. Jenkins fits right in on the Reds, as he, like many of their young pitchers, is a former top prospect who is now looking more like a reliever than a starter. It is unclear what the Reds plan to do with the athletic 6-foot-4 righty. He could compete with Robert Stephenson, Cody Reed and Amir Garrett for the No. 5 starter spot, or he could simply head to the bullpen and work in middle relief. Jenkins has posted below-average strikeout rates at every level since Low-A, and his control has been revealed to be suspect in the upper levels, so there is little to get excited about from a fantasy perspective. Additionally he dealt with ulnar nerve inflammation in his elbow at the end of last season, so that will be another factor to pay attention to when spring training arrives.

  • Rangers' Tyrell Jenkins: Designated for assignment Wednesday

Jenkins was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old came to Texas in a trade earlier in the month, but with the return of left-hander David Rollins, Jenkins lost his spot. He struggled with the big club last year but could appeal to a team looking for low-cost bullpen depth.

  • Rangers' Tyrell Jenkins: Traded to Rangers

The Braves traded Jenkins (elbow) and Brady Feigl to the Rangers on Thursday in exchange for Luke Jackson, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Jenkins finished with seven more walks than strikeouts (26:33 K:BB) in 52 innings with the Braves in 2016, and was hit hard when he did put the ball in the strike zone (11 homers). His 5.88 ERA looks bad enough, but his FIP was almost a full run higher at 6.86. The right-hander also battled some ulnar nerve inflammation late in the year, which caused some numbness in his fingers. It's uncertain how he'll be deployed to begin 2017, but Jenkins seems destined to end up in the bullpen full time.

  • Braves' Tyrell Jenkins: Regains sensation in fingers

Jenkins (elbow) says he's regained sensation in his fingers, but likely won't pitch Saturday or Sunday, MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports.

He left Friday's relief appearance with ulnar neuritis, inflammation of the ulnar nerve in the elbow/forearm, but it seems like his status is already improving. Jenkins said he could pitch in relief again this season if necessary, but that seems unlikely. At least for now, it seems he has dodged a more significant arm injury.

  • Braves' Tyrell Jenkins: Leaves with shoulder injury

Jenkins left Friday's game in the eighth inning with an apparent shoulder injury, MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports.

Jenkins slumped his shoulder after the pitch that led to him being taken out with the injury. He declined to comment on the injury after the game, but Bowman reported that Jenkins left after feeling some tingling in his arm/shoulder. It seems highly unlikely that he will pitch again this season.

  • Braves' Tyrell Jenkins: Recalled from Gwinnett

Jenkins was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The Braves made a pair of moves Saturday morning, bringing up Jenkins and Emilio Bonifacio from Triple-A. Jenkins has appeared in 12 games for the Braves in 2016, amassing a 6.20 ERA to go with a 1.70 WHIP.

  • Braves' Tyrell Jenkins: Optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett

Jenkins was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

With a 6.20 ERA and 1.70 WHIP, Jenkins has been a liability on the mound for the Braves over the course of his rookie season. Home runs have hurt Jenkins in the majors, as his H/9 sits at an inflated 2.0. He'll look to get back on track with Gwinnett, where he owns a 2.91 ERA and a solid 0.42 HR/9.

  • Braves' Tyrell Jenkins: Blasted for nine runs Saturday versus Nationals

Jenkins (2-4) allowed nine runs on eight hits, struck out three and walked two over 3.1 innings in a loss to the Nationals on Saturday.

In under four innings, the 24-year-old tossed up three homers. The last two starts for Jenkins have been particularly disastrous, as he's allowed 16 runs in eight innings (18.00 ERA). Although he has a small sample size of inning, his ERA jumped from 4.89 to 6.20 Saturday. He also has a 1.70 WHIP and 24 strikeouts in 49.1 innings over 12 MLB appearances, including eight starts.

  • Braves' Tyrell Jenkins: Blasted for seven runs Sunday

Jenkins (2-3) allowed seven runs on six hits and three walks while striking out one over 4.2 innings to take the loss Sunday against the Nationals.

Since moving out of the bullpen, Jenkins allowed more than two runs for the second time in his seven starts, and he now owns a 4.89 ERA to go along with a 1.61 WHIP. Fantasy teams in need of pitching should consider adding the righty if he's still available, as his overall numbers belie his recent performance. Despite the poor outing, if the rookie can continue his trend of mostly strong performances, he could be a player to watch in 2017. He'll make his next start Saturday against the Nationals.

  • Braves' Tyrell Jenkins: Picks up second win against Brewers

Jenkins (2-2) allowed one run on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts over six innings in a win Tuesday over Milwaukee.

Jenkins now has four quality starts in his last five outings, with the only exception being a rough outing July 24 at Coors Field. He remains wild -- he has walked at least three batters in each of those five starts, and his 13:20 K:BB in that span won't inspire any confidence. Pittsburgh is the only winning team Jenkins has faced in this strong stretch, and at this point it looks like his better results of late are more about the competition than anything else.

  • Braves' Tyrell Jenkins: Wild, but hard to hit in no-decision

Jenkins allowed just three hits and one run over six innings Thursday against the Pirates, although he walked four with just two strikeouts and didn't factor into the decision.

Jenkins has two of the fundamental problems you can't have as an MLB pitcher: walking too many hitters and not striking out enough. The rookie was able to generate a good number of grounders to escape jams, but that's not a sustainable modus operandi; no pitcher's ever succeeded with a K:BB even resembling his hideous 17:24 K:BB. Fantasy owners should be giving him precious little credit for the consecutive one-run outings he's put up.
