  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Named Opening Day starter

Corbin will start for the Nationals on Opening Day versus Atlanta. Corbin is coming off a season which saw him hold a 6.31 ERA over 31 starts, but his bloated salary gets him the nod in an otherwise inexperienced Washington rotation. For what it's worth, the veteran lefty has pitched well this spring with a 3.86 ERA and 13:1 K:BB over 14 frames.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Six solid frames Monday

Corbin gave up one run on five hits over six innings in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets. He struck out five without walking a batter. The veteran lefty was facing a lineup that included the likes of Starling Marte and Francisco Lindor, as well as top prospects Francisco Alvarez and Mark Vientos, and after giving up a run in the first inning, Corbin shut down New York the rest of the way. His control has been nearly impeccable this spring, and Corbin has a 13:1 K:BB through 14 Grapefruit League innings over four starts; however, the 33-year-old hasn't posted an ERA below 4.66 or a WHIP below 1.47 since 2019 and remains a very risky fantasy option in 2023.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Solid start to spring

Corbin gave up two runs on three hits and a walk over 2.1 innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He struck out three. Facing a Houston lineup that included the likes of Jose Altuve, Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman, Corbin sailed through two scoreless frames before running into trouble in the third. The veteran left-hander is coming off the worst season of his big-league career, and his 2021 wasn't a whole lot better, but his sizeable contract ensures he'll still be part of the Nationals' Opening Day rotation. Corbin is offering a glimmer of hope he'll be able to rebound in 2023 with a 5:1 K:BB through his first four spring innings, but he has far too much to prove to be worth a roster spot in most fantasy formats.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Crushed for seven runs

Corbin (6-19) allowed seven runs on 10 hits and three walks over 4.2 innings Sunday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Phillies. Corbin made his first start since Sept. 20 and turned in another poor outing. He gave up just one run through three innings before coughing up six in the fourth and fifth frames combined. The 33-year-old southpaw finishes the 2022 campaign with a brutal 6.31 ERA and 128:49 K:BB through 31 starts. Corbin briefly looked like he turned a corner late in the year; he registered a 2.84 ERA across 31.2 frames in six starts before Sunday's implosion.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Re-entering rotation Sunday

Corbin (back) is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Phillies, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Corbin had his last turn through the rotation skipped after he exited his start against Atlanta on Sept. 20 with back spasms, but he'll rejoin the rotation Sunday for his final start of 2022. The veteran left-hander has a 3.20 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 11:1 K:BB across 19.2 innings through three starts in September, and he'll attempt to finish the campaign with another strong outing.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Won't make next start

Corbin (back) will have his next turn through the rotation skipped, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Corbin exited Tuesday's start against Atlanta due to back spasms but has resumed throwing and has felt better recently. However, he'll miss at least one turn through the rotation due to the injury. It's not yet clear whether the Nationals plan to place him on the injured list, but he'll be sidelined for the remainder of the year if he requires an IL stint.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Plays catch Friday

Corbin (back) played catch from 90 feet Friday and is beginning to feel better, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Corbin was forced to leave Tuesday's game against Atlanta early due to back spasms. If he continues to feel better once he throws again Saturday, he could rejoin the rotation and avoid spending time on the injured list.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Battling back spasms

Corbin exited Tuesday's start in Atlanta due to back spasms, Paul Mancano of MASNSports.com reports. Corbin threw just 12 pitches and recorded only two outs before the back spasms forced him to leave Tuesday's contest. The 33-year-old will continue to be evaluated over the next few days, leaving his availability for the next turn through the rotation up in the air.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Departs with injury

Corbin was removed from Tuesday's game against Atlanta with an apparent injury, Kevin McAlpin of 680 The Fan Atlanta reports. Corbin recorded a strikeout, allowed a single and induced popout before he exited Tuesday's contest with the unspecified injury. The veteran left-hander should be considered day-to-day until the team updates his status.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Quality start in no-decision

Corbin did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits over six innings with four strikeouts against the Orioles. The only damage on the night came after a few singles and a couple of groundouts that scored a run in the top of the second inning. Otherwise, Corbin held Baltimore in check to position himself to win before the bullpen blew the game for the Nationals. The southpaw has thrown six or more innings in five of his last six starts, four of which have been quality starts. In that stretch, his ERA has decreased from 7.02 to 6.11.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Falls to Phillies

Corbin (6-18) took the loss Friday, coughing up five runs on 12 hits over 6.2 innings as the Nationals were downed 5-3 by the Phillies. He struck out two without walking a batter. The veteran southpaw was hit hard, serving up home runs to Rhys Hoskins and J.T. Realmuto while tying his season high by allowing a dozen hits. Corbin saw his brief two-game winning streak snapped, and he's closing in on becoming just the second pitcher since 1980 to lose at least 20 games in a season, a dubious achievement Mike Maroth reached with the Tigers in 2003.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Prevails over Mets

Corbin (6-17) allowed a run on three hits and a walk while striking out five over seven innings to earn the win Saturday over the Mets. Corbin limited the damage to an Eduardo Escobar solo shot in the third inning. The game was tied through seven frames, but the Nationals gained the lead on a Lane Thomas solo home run in the eighth to put Corbin in line for consecutive wins for just the second time all year. This was also the southpaw's eighth quality start of the campaign. He's given up just four runs in his last 18.1 innings, though he's also yielded three homers in that span. For the year, he has a 6.28 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 118:46 K:BB through 134.2 innings. He's projected to make his next start in Philadelphia if the Nationals utilize a six-man rotation -- if it's a traditional five-man rotation, Corbin would line up for a start in St. Louis.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Back in win column

Corbin (5-17) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk over six innings Sunday, striking out five and earning a win over the Reds. Corbin yielded an unearned run in the first inning before serving up a solo homer to Stuart Fairchild in the second. The veteran southpaw then turned in four straight scoreless frames to earn his first win since June 28. He'd gone 0-7 with an abysmal 8.32 ERA in nine outings since that last victory. Corbin will carry a 6.56 ERA into his projected road outing against the Mets next weekend.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Unlucky loss Sunday

Corbin (4-17) allowed two runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three batters in 5.1 innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Padres. Corbin had given up at least four runs in seven straight starts entering Sunday, so this was a noticeable improvement. He yielded a two-run home run to former teammate Josh Bell in the sixth inning, and that was ultimately enough to send Corbin to the loss. The struggling southpaw has a 6.81 ERA, 1.81 WHIP and 108:44 K:BB through 121.2 innings through 25 starts this year. He's tentatively projected for a home start versus the Reds next weekend.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Throws six innings in no-decision

Corbin did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks over six innings in the Nationals' extra-innings loss vs the Cubs. He struck out three. The Cubs got to Corbin a few times Tuesday, as he allowed runners to score in the second, fourth and sixth innings, but Corbin managed to finish the sixth and give the Nationals an opportunity to win the game. This was the southpaw's first start reaching the six-inning milestone since July 9 as he just completed a five-game stretch in which he allowed 26 runs to score over 15.2 innings. He is next scheduled to take on the newly-revamped Padres lineup this weekend.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Pushed back to Tuesday

Corbin's next scheduled start will be pushed back from Friday to Tuesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Corbin has given up a whopping 30 earned runs in 21.2 innings over his last six starts, so the Nationals decided to bump him back a few days and give him added to time to make adjustments before his next start. Barring any further changes to the rotation, Corbin's next start will come next Tuesday at home against the Cubs.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Felled by Phillies

Corbin (4-16) gave up six earned runs over 0.2 innings and took the loss Saturday as the Nationals fell to the Phillies. He allowed five hits, did not strike out a batter and walked two. Corbin failed to make it out of the first inning for the second time in three starts, and his latest rough outing pushed his ERA to an unsightly 7.02. Provided he remains on regular rest, Corbin's next start will come at home against the Padres.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Struggles again Monday

Corbin (4-15) took the loss against the Mets on Monday, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four batters. Corbin gave up three runs in the second inning and another in the third before being pulled with one out in the fifth frame. The left-hander racked up 12 swinging strikes but was done in by allowing five two-out hits. Corbin has struggled most of the season, but his problems have really been emphasized over his past five outings. During that stretch, he's registered a 10.29 ERA and 2.19 WHIP while taking five losses over 21 innings.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Pulled in first inning

Corbin (4-14) gave up six earned runs on seven hits and a walk with no strikeouts over two-thirds of an inning to take the loss in a 7-1 defeat against the Dodgers on Wednesday. It was a terrible start for Corbin who quickly found himself overmatched by the highest scoring offense in the National League. The Dodgers sent ten men to the plate in the first inning before Corbin got the hook after giving up six runs and only getting two outs. Sloppy defense was partially to blame, as a Gavin Lux double which made it 6-0 was a catchable fly ball that should have made the third out of the inning. Nevertheless, Corbin was handed his MLB-leading 14th loss of the season, and his ERA jumped to an abysmal 6.49. The veteran pitcher will try to rebound in his next start which is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday against the Mets.

  • Nationals' Patrick Corbin: Struggles again Friday

Corbin (4-13) took the loss Friday versus the Diamondbacks. He allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in five innings. Corbin has allowed at least four runs in each of his last three starts after briefly appearing to have turned a corner in late June and early July. The southpaw continues to put up solid strikeout totals -- he's posted 35 punchouts in his last 31 innings -- but that's about the only bright spot in his performance. He owns a 6.02 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 98:36 K:BB across 104.2 innings in 20 starts this year. Corbin's projected for a difficult road start versus the Dodgers next week.
