Player Outlook
Starling Marte was limited to only 86 games as he missed time due to migraines, then had his season end in early August due to a right groin issue. It's unclear if Marte's injury is related to the double-groin surgery he underwent in November 2022, but he reportedly does not need more offseason surgery and will be healthy in the spring. After posting a wRC+ between 108 and 134 the previous five seasons, Marte's 76 mark was a career low. Marte's batted ball skills were as good, or better than the previous two seasons where he posted a 132 and 134 wRC+. Marte's average exit velocity was its highest since 2019, and his hard-hit rate was a career best. Barrel percentage was down a bit, piggybacking hitting fewer fly balls. Marte was 24-for-28 in stolen base attempts. All signs point to a rebound but expecting a full bounce back from an injury-prone 35-year-old is a slippery slope. There are ample encouraging signs to take a chance, just don't bank on a full return, and have a backup plan at the ready.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Spring struggles continue

Marte went 0-for-2 in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. Getting the start in right field and batting fifth, Marte flied out to center field in the second inning before popping out to second base in the fourth. The Mets were hoping the 35-year-old outfielder would return to form after a healthy offseason, but so far this spring Marte is batting a worrying .091 (2-for-22) with zero extra-base hits or steals and a 1:3 BB:K. He's still locked into the starting role in right field and has time yet in camp to turn things around, but after he posted a career-worst .248 batting average and .625 OPS in 2023, expectations for Marte have never been lower.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Set for Grapefruit debut Wednesday

Marte (groin) will make his Grapefruit League debut Wednesday against the Cardinals, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Marte has struggled to stay healthy since undergoing double groin surgery last offseason, but he played in the Dominican Winter League this offseason and reported to spring camp healthy. The veteran outfielder played just 86 games in 2023 and slashed a lackluster 248/.301/.324.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: No worries about lower body

Marte reported to camp fully healthy and appears to have put last season's groin issues behind him, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. A stint in the Dominican Winter League offered further proof that the 35-year-old outfielder is healthy again, as he stole two bases in 11 postseason games for Leones del Escogido while posting a .388 OBP. Marte underwent core muscle surgery in November 2022 and never seemed to fully bounce back, eventually suiting up for only 86 games in 2023 with a career-worst .248/.301/.324 slash line. He's never been an iron man -- Marte's topped 600 plate appearances only twice in his career, and not since 2018 -- but if he feels like himself again, he might produce something closer to the .301/.365/.463 line he delivered in 2021-22 while averaging 516 PAs.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Making debut in winter ball

Marte (groin) is making his Dominican Winter League debut Wednesday with Leones del Escogido, Michael Mayer of MetsmerizedOnline.com reports. Marte has been practicing with the club and is now in its lineup for the first time, batting second and playing right field. It will be the 35-year-old's first game action since Aug. 5, as his season ended prematurely due to a nagging right groin injury. Marte was considered healthy heading into the offseason, but playing some winter ball should provide him and the Mets with some peace of mind heading into spring training, assuming he has no setbacks. He was limited to only 86 games in 2023, producing a career-low .625 OPS.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Expected to play winter ball

Marte (groin) is expected to see some game action in the Dominican Winter League soon, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. While no firm plan for Marte's first winter ball game has been established, he's been practicing with Leones del Escogido and it sounds like playing in games is imminent. Marte's last regular-season game with the Mets came on Aug. 5, as he was ultimately shut down with a nagging right groin injury. He didn't require surgery and is now considered healthy, but the 35-year-old wanted to knock off some rust in winter ball. The Mets are hoping for a bounce-back campaign from Marte in 2024, but he'll head into the season as a major health risk.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Won't require surgery

President of baseball operations David Stearns said Wednesday that Marte (groin) won't need to undergo surgery during the offseason, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Marte landed on the injured list in early August due to a right groin strain and ended up missing the rest of the season as a result. Not requiring surgery is good news for Marte's spring training availability, although the 35-year-old outfielder is coming off his worst season at the plate statistically after slashing .248/.301/.324 with 28 RBI over 341 plate appearances.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Shut down for remainder of season

Marte (groin) will not return for the Mets this season, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports. Marte had been hoping to return to action at some point this week, but he didn't wind up playing any rehab games as previously scheduled, and the decision has been made to go ahead and shut him down. There's no indication that he's suffered a setback, but rather the Mets seem to have decided there's little incentive in pushing the veteran outfielder back for some relatively meaningless games. Marte will finish the 2023 campaign having slashed only .248/.301/.324 with five home runs and 24 stolen bases across 86 games.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: On track for final homestand

Marte (groin) is scheduled to play a pair of rehab games Saturday and Sunday with Triple-A Syracuse, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. If all goes well in those two games, Marte should be cleared to return to the Mets' active roster for their final homestand, which begins Tuesday against the visiting Marlins. Out since early August due to a right groin strain, the veteran outfielder is currently getting simulated reps at the team's spring training complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Traveling with team

Marte (groin) will accompany the Mets on their road trip to Miami this week, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. While there's still no guarantee the outfielder will play again in 2023, the Mets remain optimistic Marte will be cleared before the end of September. The 34-year-old has been sidelined since early August due to a groin strain that could be connected to the core muscle surgery he underwent in November 2022, and his career-worst .625 OPS through 86 games this season also suggests he hasn't been fully healthy all year. With two years and over $40 million left on his contract, the Mets have to be hoping he's able to rebound in 2024.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Does full workout Wednesday

Marte (groin) went through a full pregame workout Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Marte is now making steady progress in his recovery from the right groin strain that sent him to the injured list back in early August and told reporters Wednesday that he is aiming to return to the Mets' active roster for the final week of the 2023 regular season. When healthy this year, the veteran outfielder has slashed .248/.301/.324 with five home runs and 24 stolen bases across 86 games.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Responds well to physical therapy

Marte (groin) said Sunday that he had a productive week of physical therapy in Philadelphia and remains optimistic that he'll return from the 10-day injured list before the end of the season, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The non-contending Mets likely won't be eager to bring Marte back from the IL unless he's 100 percent healthy, but he'll at least be given the chance to play again in 2023 if he remains free of setbacks as he navigates the rehab process for his right groin strain. However, if Marte fails to progress in his recovery as anticipated, he'll be at risk of undergoing surgery for the second offseason in a row. Marte previously had surgery last November to address injuries to both of his groins.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Getting physical therapy for injury

Mets manager Buck Showalter said Marte (groin) will head to Philadelphia this week to take part in physical therapy, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports. Marte was placed on the 10-day injured list Aug. 7 with what the Mets classified as a right groin strain, but the extent of the injury still remains somewhat hazy. Showalter didn't offer much clarity on that front Monday, nor was the skipper willing to provide any real timeline for Marte to return from the 10-day injured list. Given that Marte underwent surgery last November to repair both of his groin tendons along with the fact that the Mets are out of playoff contention, it wouldn't be surprising if the 34-year-old remained sidelined for the rest of the season.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Not close to returning

Marte (groin) indicated Friday that he's not close to a return and is unsure he'll make it back before the end of the season, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Marte landed back on the IL in early August and had hoped to return to the Mets relatively quickly. However, he received another pain-killing injection in the right side of his groin earlier this week and was more guarded Friday when asked when he might make it back. The outfielder also didn't rule out additional surgery on his groin this offseason after having two procedures last winter, saying "that's a conversation that's going to have to be had with the trainers." Marte has been limited to just 86 games this season, producing a lowly .625 OPS.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: May not be pushed for '23 return

The Mets believe Marte's current groin injury could be related to his offseason core muscle surgery, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. The veteran outfielder underwent surgery last November to repair separated groin tendons, and while he returned in time for spring training, Marte simply hasn't looked 100 percent all season. While he does have 24 steals in 28 attempts, his .625 OPS is the lowest mark of his career by a significant margin. If lingering issues with his groin are the cause of his 2023 struggles, the Mets would at least have reason to believe he can return to form next season after resting and rehabbing over the winter. The 34-year-old has no timeline for his return, and with New York out of the playoff picture, the team has little incentive to push him back into the lineup down the stretch. Marte has two years and $41.5 million left on his contract after the current campaign.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: May require rehab assignment

Marte (groin) likely won't be activated off the injured list when eligible Wednesday and could embark on a rehab assignment, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Marte landed on the injured list Monday and received an injection Tuesday in order to help speed up his recovery process. However, it seems that Marte's return date will still be pushed back, especially if he does end up playing a few games in the minors. There is still a chance Marte returns before the end of August, but he likely won't be urgently rushed back considering the Mets' current position in the postseason race.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Receives injection Tuesday

Marte received an injection in his right groin Tuesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Marte was placed on the 10-day IL on Monday with a right groin strain, and his injection should allow him to resume "light activity" within the next few days. Because the Mets currently aren't in a position to contend for a playoff spot, there likely won't be any rush to get Marte back in the lineup. However, he still figures to return before the end of August.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Moves to IL with groin strain

The Mets placed Marte on the 10-day injured list Monday with a right groin strain, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Marte returned from the IL on Friday after missing about two weeks while recovering from migraine headaches, but after going 0-for-8 in the first two games of the weekend series with the Orioles before sitting out Sunday's loss, the veteran outfielder now finds himself back on the shelf. The Mets haven't provided a timeline for Marte's return, but given the team's status as a non-contender along with the fact that the 34-year-old underwent offseason surgery to repair separated tendons in both of his groins, he looks like a strong bet to miss more than the minimum 10 days. Marte has provided value on the bases (24 steals in 28 attempts), but he's otherwise endured a rough second season in New York; he's slugged just five home runs and is batting a career-low .248.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Out of Sunday's lineup

Marte is not in the lineup for Sunday's game at Baltimore. Marte started the past two games after missing a couple weeks with migraines, and he'll head to the bench for Sunday's series finale. DJ Stewart will start in right field and bat cleanup.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Activated from IL

Marte (migraines) was activated from the injured list Friday and will start in right field against the Orioles. Marte has been on the injured list since July 20 due to migraines, but he has not had an issue since being prescribed medication. The veteran outfielder's production has taken a considerable step back this season, and he's slashed .267/.333/.367 through 33 plate appearances in July.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Expected back Friday

Marte (migraines) is expected to be activated from the injured list Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Marte has been out since mid-July due to a series of migraine headaches, but he's been prescribed medication and is doing all baseball activities without issue. The veteran outfielder carries a weak .254/.308/.332 batting line in 333 plate appearances this season, but he can look to finish strong in the second year of a four-year, $78 million pact with the Mets.
