• Orioles' Kyle Gibson: Back in Baltimore

  Gibson signed a one-year, $5.25 million contract with the Orioles on Friday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. With Grayson Rodriguez, Tyler Wells and Kyle Bradish all set to miss the start of the season due to elbow injuries, the Orioles will bring in Gibson to give their rotation a bit of extra depth heading into Opening Day. The 37-year-old righty left Baltimore to play in St. Louis last season, where he turned in a 4.24 ERA and 1.35 WHIP alongside a 151:68 K:BB over 169.2 innings. He's been pitching in simulated games against college hitters to stay in shape during the offseason, though his 2025 debut will be delayed while the Orioles put him through a normal spring ramp-up process, per Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com.

  Gibson has reached 60 pitches in simulated games against college hitters and still plans to pitch in the majors this season, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. There's been little free-agent buzz around Gibson since the Cardinals elected to decline his $12 million club option for 2025 back in October. He's 37 but has made 30-plus starts each of the last three seasons while producing a 4.68 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. Gibson appears to be doing what he can to keep his arm ready, and he should eventually catch on with a club in need of a veteran innings-eater.

Gibson failed to pitch into the fifth inning for the first time in 13 starts. Three of his four hits allowed went for extra bases, including a two-run home run by Charlie Blackmon. Gibson has allowed nine home runs in his last eight starts, posting a 4.98 ERA during that stretch. With three games left on the schedule for St. Louis, Thursday's outing was likely the last we'll see of Gibson in 2024. He finishes the season with an 8-8 record, a 4.24 ERA and a 151:68 K:BB.

  Gibson (8-8) took the loss Friday as the Cardinals fell 5-1 to the Guardians, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out two. A Thomas Saggese throwing error allowed Gibson to barely qualify for his 13th quality start of the season, but he once again didn't get much run support. The right-hander has only one win since the All-Star break, going 1-5 over his last 11 outings despite a respectable 4.08 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 50:24 K:BB through 64 innings. Gibson will try to close out his season on a high note next weekend on the road in San Francisco.

It's an encouraging effort for Gibson, who struggled to a 5.77 ERA over 34.1 innings in August. The veteran starter has a 4.20 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 143:59 K:BB through 154.1 innings over 27 starts this season. His next outing is projected to be a road start at Toronto. Gibson should get a little extra rest down the stretch with the Cardinals expected to go to a six-man rotation starting next week when Lance Lynn (knee) comes off the injured list.

Gibson's problem with home runs Wednesday may thus prove to be just an aberration, and he'll look to bounce back in his next start, which tentatively lines up to be at home against Milwaukee.

Gibson hadn't lasted more than five frames in an outing in over a month, so the rest afforded by the All-Star break appears to have done him some good. He'll take a 3.99 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 102:43 K:BB through 108.1 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Nationals.
