Shaw signed a minor-league contract Friday with the White Sox, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. Shaw was released by the team in late March after failing to claim a spot on the Opening Day roster, but he'll get another shot with the organization after going unsigned for a full month. The veteran reliever will first head to the club's spring training complex in Arizona before eventually joining up with Triple-A Charlotte.... See More ... See Less

Bryan Shaw: Parts ways with White Sox
Shaw was released by the White Sox on Sunday, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. The veteran right-hander was informed earlier Sunday he didn't make Chicago's Opening Day roster, so it's no surprise to see him return to free agency. Shaw had 5.40 ERA over 60 appearances last year but was solid during spring training with one earned run allowed over 8.1 frames.... See More ... See Less -
White Sox's Bryan Shaw: Misses out on Opening Day roster
The White Sox informed Shaw on Sunday that he won't be included on the Opening Day roster, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. Shaw had been attending spring training as a non-roster invitee after signing a minor-league deal with Chicago in February. Given his status as a 35-year-old veteran with 753 career regular-season appearances in the majors along with the fact that he's coming off a respectable showing in Cactus League play (1.08 ERA, 1.32 WHIP in 8.1 innings), Shaw may choose to pursue his options in free agency rather than joining the White Sox's top affiliate at Triple-A Charlotte.... Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Passes through waivers
The Guardians outrighted Shaw to Triple-A Columbus on Monday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports. Shaw is on the books for $3 million in 2022 and is likely eager to receive the remaining prorated portion of his contract, so his decision to accept the outright assignment rather than electing free agency doesn't come as a surprise. Before he was removed from the Guardians' 40-man roster, Shaw turned in a 5.40 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 52:26 K:BB in 58.1 innings. His contract includes a $4 million club option for 2023, which the Guardians will almost certainly decline this winter.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Designated for assignment
Shaw was designated for assignment by the Guardians on Saturday. Shaw made 60 appearances (two starts) for Cleveland in 2022 and converted his lone save chance while picking up seven holds. However, he served mainly as a middle reliever and posted a 5.40 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 58.1 innings. It's not yet clear whether he'll remain in the organization if he goes unclaimed on waivers.... Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Picks up sixth win
Shaw (6-2) retired the only batter he faced to earn the win Wednesday over the Tigers. Shaw ended a threat after James Karinchak left with runners on the corners and two out. The Guardians' offense took over from there, posting a six-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Shaw his third win in his last 11 outings. The veteran reliever has allowed eight runs across 14.1 innings in that span, and for the season he owns a 5.36 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 38:21 K:BB with one save and six holds through 43.2 frames.... Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Tallies first save
Shaw struck out two and threw a scoreless 10th inning to earn the save Thursday against the Tigers. Emmanuel Clase was unavailable to pitch after taking the mound in four of Cleveland's last five games. That gave Shaw the chance to earn his first save of the season. Shaw has a 5.10 ERA across 42.1 innings this season and has surrendered nine earned runs across his last 14 frames.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Credited with win
Shaw (5-2) struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the win Wednesday over the Tigers. Starter Aaron Civale lasted four innings in his return from a wrist injury, while Shaw was credited with the win for his clean sixth inning. After allowing multiple runs in his last three appearances in July, Shaw has rebounded to begin August with three consecutive scoreless outings. The veteran reliever has a 5.23 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 34:21 K:BB and six holds across 41.1 innings this year, and his inconsistency has kept him relegated to a low-leverage role.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Gets another turn as opener
Shaw is listed as the Guardians' starting pitcher for Sunday's game in Tampa Bay, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. While making his first start in 733 MLB appearances in Tuesday's loss to the Red Sox, Shaw covered 2.1 innings, so he's likely to work more than a traditional opener while he picks up his second start of the week. Even so, Shaw probably shouldn't be expected to work any more than 3-to-4 innings, so he'll have a tough time qualifying for the win unless the Guardians race out to an early lead and maintain it throughout. Kirk McCarty is the primary option to work in long relief behind Shaw and is a likelier candidate to factor into any decision.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Surrenders two runs in start
Shaw pitched 2.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two in Tuesday's win over the Red Sox. He did not factor in the decision. Shaw made his first career "start" Tuesday, serving as an opener for primary pitcher Kirk McCarty. The right-hander pitched two clean innings before allowing three runners to reach base and a run to score before being replaced on the mound. Another run he was responsible for would come around to score after he exited the contest. Shaw has now allowed four runs on four hit and three walks over four frames his last two appearances. Since the beginning of July, the 34-year-old has seen his ERA rise from 5.11 to 5.45.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Slated to open Tuesday's game
Guardians manager Terry Francona said Shaw will serve as the team's opening pitcher in Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. The 34-year-old will be making his first big-league "start" after coming out of the bullpen for the first 732 appearances of his career. Since he hasn't tossed more than two innings at any point in 2022, Shaw is unlikely to make it even once through the order before Francona turns the game over to the bullpen. Meisel posits that Kirk McCarty will be recalled from Triple-A Columbus to serve as a primary pitcher behind Shaw.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Charged with second loss
Shaw (4-2) took the loss in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader versus the White Sox. He allowed two runs on a hit and two walks with one strikeout in 1.2 innings. Shaw was responsible for both runners aboard in the eighth inning, and Nick Sandlin took a blown save when he allowed them to score on an AJ Pollock two-run single. This was the fourth time in Shaw's last 10 appearances that he's allowed multiple runs. He now has a 5.29 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 28:16 K:BB with four holds through 34 innings in 39 appearances.... Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Collects win Friday
Shaw (4-1) allowed one hit across two scoreless innings to pick up the win Friday over the Tigers. Shaw entered Friday having allowed five runs (four earned) in his last 3.2 innings. He was able to keep the Guardians' deficit to one run, and they pulled ahead in the bottom of the seventh to put the veteran reliever in line for the win. This was Shaw's first win since June 15, and he's struggled by allowing at least one run in six of his last nine appearances. The right-hander has a 5.17 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 26:14 K:BB while adding four holds in 31.1 innings in 37 outings this season. Given his recent struggles, he'll likely continue to see middle-relief assignments.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Takes first loss
Shaw (3-1) allowed three runs on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Friday versus the Red Sox. Shaw worked in the seventh inning, but he allowed a two-run home run to Christian Arroyo and then put J.D. Martinez on base with a two-out single. Anthony Gose allowed the inherited runner to score, and the Guardians were unable to get Shaw off the hook as the veteran reliever took his first loss of the season. He's allowed four runs in his last three appearances since the end of his 8.2-inning scoreless streak. The 34-year-old has a 4.70 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 18:12 K:BB across 23 innings overall, and he's added four holds in 30 appearances. Given his recent shakiness, he could start to relinquish some of the high-leverage opportunities he'd earned earlier in the month.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Awarded win
Shaw (3-0) earned the win Wednesday over the Rockies. He struck out one in a perfect inning. Shaw pitched in the eighth inning, but he was deemed the most effective of four Guardians relievers between starter Konnor Pilkington and closer Emmanuel Clase. This was Shaw's second win in as many outings after he picked up just one victory in the first two months of the campaign. He's at a 3.38 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 18:10 K:BB across 21.1 innings in 27 appearances overall. The 34-year-old extended his scoreless streak to 8.2 innings, as he's been in a groove lately.... Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Snags win Tuesday
Shaw (2-0) walked one and struck out one in a scoreless inning, earning the win Tuesday versus the Rockies. Shaw pitched the ninth inning with the game tied 3-3, and he kept it that way. The 34-year-old then ended up in line for the win when the Guardians pulled ahead in the 10th inning, and Emmanuel Clase was able to protect the one-run lead. Shaw's scoreless streak is up to 7.2 innings in his last nine appearances. He's allowed four hits and five walks with 10 strikeouts in that span. For the season, the veteran reliever has a 3.54 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 17:10 K:BB and three holds through 20.1 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Quietly steady
Shaw has not allowed a run in his last eight appearances spanning 6.2 innings. In that stretch, he's logged a 9:4 K:BB while allowing four hits. Shaw has just three holds on the year and none since May 5, so he's not in the mix for much high-leverage work. He's done well in a less glamorous role, posting a 3.72 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 16:9 K:BB across 19.1 innings overall, serving as a trusty veteran in a bullpen not lacking for solid pitching. The Guardians' 2.98 bullpen ERA as a team ranks fourth-best in the majors.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Pitches scoreless inning
Shaw allowed a hit and struck out three in a scoreless inning during Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Astros. Shaw's season numbers are skewed by one bad outing -- he allowed five runs without recording an out May 13 versus the White Sox. He's only allowed three other runs in the rest of his 17 appearances this season, but that one meltdown puts him at a 5.27 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB across 13.2 innings. The 34-year-old right-hander has added a 1-0 record and three holds, though he's not likely to see save chances all that frequently.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Nabs win Sunday
Shaw (1-0) pitched a perfect inning to earn the win Sunday versus the Blue Jays. Shaw kept the Guardians within a run in the eighth inning, and they took the lead in the bottom half of the frame. The 34-year-old reliever has been solid this year, posting a 1.80 ERA and 1.10 WHIP across 10 innings in 13 appearances. He's yet to allow a home run after surrendering 10 long balls in 81 appearances last season. Shaw has added three holds, though it's unlikely he'll challenge Emmanuel Clase for the closer job.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Bryan Shaw: Clean inning Wednesday
Shaw pitched a perfect inning in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the White Sox. Shaw worked the seventh inning after starter Shane Bieber tossed six innings of one-run ball. This was the first time in five outings Shaw has been tasked with a full inning of work, and he's allowed just one run, two hits and three walks with two strikeouts across 2.2 innings this season. In 2021, he picked up a 6-7 record, 20 holds, two saves and six blown saves, but the 34-year-old's not currently part of the Guardians' late-inning mix.... See More ... See Less
