Dan Otero: Begins career in baseball ops
Cleveland recently added Otero to its baseball operations department as an advanced scout, signaling the end of his playing career, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Before spending the 2020 season on the Yankees' restricted list due to presumptive opt out, Otero spent parts of eight seasons in the majors with San Francisco, Oakland and Cleveland. Over 358 career relief appearances, Otero posted a 3.39 ERA across 403.2 innings. Since he turned 36 in February and likely would have had to begin the upcoming season in the minors if he signed with an organization, he's instead decided to transition into an off-field role within the sport.

The 34-year-old righty had a 4.85 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 16:3 K:BB in 29.2 innings. At his age and with such a poor strikeout rate, he may struggle to get a big-league deal this offseason.

Indians' Dan Otero: Activated from IL
Otero (shoulder) was activated from the 60-day injured list by the Indians on Sunday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
Otero has been on the injured list since June 2 but has pitched consistently throughout August with Triple-A Columbus. He's looked strong, working 11.1 scoreless innings while racking up eight strikeouts. Prior to hitting the injured list, Otero posted a 4.56 ERA and 1.48 WHIP with the Indians, recording one hold.

Otero features a dominant 0.90 ERA and has allowed only four hits across 10 innings in nine appearances for Triple-A Columbus. Manager Terry Francona is planning on getting the veteran right-hander back to begin September assuming all goes well until then. Otero previously made five rehab appearances across three different affiliates in July before he was shut down a week and a half ago after experiencing an apparent setback. He was able to complete a bullpen session Sunday without incident, so the right-hander looks like he could be ready to resume game action later this week. The righty posted a 4.56 ERA and 1.48 WHIP across 23.2 innings with the Indians before getting shut down June 2 with right shoulder inflammation.

Otero (shoulder) was shifted to the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
This move comes after Otero was pulled off his rehab assignment last week after expressing concerns about his recovery from pitching on back-to-back days, according to Joe Noga of Cleveland.com. An updated timetable for his return has yet to emerge. Yasiel Puig, who was acquired from the Reds as part of a three-team deal Tuesday, will replace Otero on the 40-man roster.
