Eric Sogard: Parts ways with Cubs
The Cubs released Sogard on Wednesday.
After going unclaimed off waivers when he was designated him for assignment last week, Sogard presumably wasn't keen on reporting to Triple-A Iowa, so the Cubs elected to grant him his release. The 34-year-old utility man slashed .249/.283/.314 across 180 plate appearances with the Cubs this season before being bumped off the 40-man roster.

Cubs' Eric Sogard: DFA'd by Cubs
Sogard was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Friday, Tim Stebbins of NBC Sports Chicago reports.
The veteran infielder has a .249/.283/.314 slash line through 180 plate appearances this season, so it's not a major surprise to see Chicago jettison him from the 40-man roster with Matt Duffy (back) returning from the injured list. Sogard posted an .810 OPS in 110 games in 2019, but he's unlikely to garner much interest on the waiver wire with a paltry .582 OPS in 121 contests over the past two years.

Sogard (thumb) was reinstated from the injured list Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Sogard had been dealing with a left thumb contusion, but he'll return after spending the minimum amount of time on the injured list. He should serve as infield depth for the Cubs.

The Cubs placed Sogard on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a left thumb contusion, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
The infielder will be sidelined until after the All-Star break with the thumb injury. It's unclear whether Sogard is headed toward a more extended absence. Though the 35-year-old has hit an unremarkable .250 in 160 at-bats this season, he's likely to stick with the Cubs due to his defensive versatility and, when things get ugly, mop-up pitching abilities.

Sogard will stick in the starting nine for the fourth straight contest, as he appears to be the beneficiary of both Anthony Rizzo (back) and Kris Bryant (side) being day-to-day with injuries. The Cubs are holding out hope that both players will be able to avoid the injured list, in which case Sogard would fade back into a utility role. Sogard went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's loss to the Brewers.
Making his fourth straight start, Sogard was productive in the 15-7 Cubs loss. Both Anthony Rizzo (back) and Kris Bryant (side) were out of the lineup Wednesday and are considered day-to-day with their injuries. Sogard should return to a bench role soon, but he has some limited fantasy value while the two Chicago stars are out.

Cubs' Eric Sogard: Losing work to Alcantara
Sogard will return from a three-game absence from the lineup to start at second base and bat seventh Sunday against the Cardinals.
Though Sogard is back in the starting nine for the series finale, his days as Chicago's primary second baseman may be over. The lefty-hitting Sogard was withheld from the lineup for each of the last three games, all of which came against right-handed starting pitchers. Sergio Alcantara appears to have leapfrogged Sogard on the depth chart, but there will be room in the lineup for both players in the middle infield Sunday after Javier Baez (thumb) was scratched from the lineup.

Sogard is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres.
Thanks to injuries to fellow infielders Nico Hoerner (hamstring), David Bote (shoulder) and Matt Duffy (back), Sogard appears to have seized hold of a regular role at second base. Though the Padres will bring a right-hander (Yu Darvish) to the hill for the series finale, the lefty-hitting Sogard will head to the bench in what most likely amounts to a maintenance day. Ian Happ will relieve Sogard at the keystone, ending a streak of four straight starts at the position.

Sogard went 1-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored and a walk in Saturday's win over the Reds.
Sogard started for the fourth game in a row with Nico Hoerner (hamstring) landing on the 10-day injured list, and the veteran has been making the most of the opportunity. He's hit safely in three of those four appearances, going 4-for-14 with a double, two RBI and four runs scored in that span. That's far from being elite production, but he's providing decent numbers near the bottom of the order.

Sogard bumped his average up to .257 with the three-hit performance, but he still figures to retreat to the bench when Baez rejoins the lineup, and Hoerner could earn more regular playing time at the keystone now that he's with the big-league club. This could make Sogard an affordable option in daily formats when he plays; he's mostly off the radar in season-long leagues due to his role.

Sogard went 1-for-1 with a single, a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 16-4 win over the Mets.
Sogard pinch hit for Zach Davies in the bottom of the fourth and made the most of his opportunity by notching an RBI single to extend the Cubs' lead to 6-2. He would eventually steal second base during the next at-bat and come around to score the seventh run of the inning on an Ian Happ single. Sogard hasn't made much noise at the plate so far this year but does have three hits, three runs scored and two RBI over his last two games after managing just three hits, a run scored and two RBI in his first 26 at-bats.

Sogard went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's win over the Mets.
Sogard was a late addition to the lineup, replacing David Bote, who had an upset stomach. The former responded with a solid game and helped the Cubs earn a 3-1 win. Sogard is still batting just .172 this season, however, and he'll likely to retreat to the bench when Bote is feeling better.
