Phillies no-hitter: Zack Wheeler gives up single to Tigers' Tyler Nevin with one out in eighth inning

Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler got through one out in the eighth inning before allowing a hit to the visiting Tigers in Philadelphia Thursday evening. He was totally dominant through his 7 1/3 no-hit innings, but then things took a bad turn for the Phillies, albeit temporarily. They'd eventually prevail, 3-2.

With one out in the eighth, Tigers third baseman Jonathan Schoop's weak grounder down the third-base line resulted in an error on the throw to first. The following hitter, Tyler Nevin, broke up the no-no with a clean, line drive single to right field. Zach Short followed with a bunt single -- a safety squeeze that resulted in no outs and was ruled a single -- that plated a run.

What was once a 1-0 Phillies lead with Wheeler going for history was now a tie game.

In the ninth, the Tigers would rally against Phillies reliever Craig Kimbrel to take the lead. Javier Báez led off with a single, advanced to second on an errant Kimbrel pick-off attempt and then scored on Nick Maton's single. The Tigers would, however, leave the bases loaded and that would spell trouble.

Bryce Harper led off the bottom of the ninth with a double. He eventually came around to score before Kody Clemens came through with a walk-off single.

This was the Phillies' fifth consecutive win, moving them to 30-32 on the season, which is only 2 1/2 games from playoff position. These Phillies know very well that just getting to the postseason can clear the path for a special run. Speaking of last season, the Phillies were 31-31 at this point, so through all the turmoil to this point, they are only one game behind 2022's pace.

Wheeler's would-be no-hitter would have been the first Major League Baseball has seen since Game 4 of the World Series in this same ballpark, when the Astros threw a combined no-hitter against the Phillies.

Through his eight innings, Wheeler struck out eight against one walk and one hit batter. He has three career shutouts, most recently a two-hitter on Aug. 8, 2021.

The last regular-season no-hitter came on June 25 last year when it was, again, a combined effort by the Astros. The last individual no-hitter happened on May 10, 2022 when Reid Detmers of the Angels pulled off the feat.

The Phillies have 13 no-hitters in franchise history. The last time it happened was July 25, 2015, when Cole Hamels threw one against the Cubs in Wrigley Field.

Ruled an error

Harrison made a hell of a play on a backhand close to the line and then bounced the throw to first. Clemens couldn't handle it, so it's an error.
