Ike Davis in danger of demotion?

Within the past week, we've seen the Blue Jays demote -- and eventually place on waivers -- Adam Lind and the Marlins demote Gaby Sanchez to Triple-A. Might young Mets slugger Ike Davis be the next struggling first baseman to take a hit? It sounds like that is a distinct possibility.

Within the past week, we've seen the Blue Jays demote -- and eventually place on waivers -- Adam Lind and the Marlins demote Gaby Sanchez to Triple-A. Might young Mets slugger Ike Davis be the next struggling first baseman to take a hit? It sounds like that is a distinct possibility.

“There is nothing etched in stone,” manager Terry Collins told media Sunday (nypost.com). "What we’re trying to do is make sure we wring the rag dry. Coming into this road trip we said, ‘Here are some pretty good opportunities, this is a pretty good hitting park, Pittsburgh is a pretty good hitting park, we’ve got right-handers coming up, let’s just see if we can get him going.'"

Collins had told reporters last week that it was "doubtful" Davis would be demoted. So changing to this tune sounds like he's wavering a bit.

Davis, 25, is hitting just .160/.220/.298 with five homers, 14 RBI and 12 runs heading into Sunday's game against the Blue Jays.

If Davis were to be demoted to Triple-A, the Mets could handle it on the field rather easily. Lucas Duda can play first base, while Andres Torres, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Scott Hairston and a soon-to-be-returning Jason Bay handle the outfield. In fact, this might be the best bet for all, as Davis could probably get himself right in the minors.
