  • Shane Baz SP | BAL

Orioles' Shane Baz: Strong start wasted Wednesday

Baz didn't factor into the decision Wednesday as the Orioles were downed 5-3 by the Rays, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out six.

The right-hander delivered his second straight quality start on 94 pitches (57 strikes), and Baz left the mound in line for his second win of the season, but the Baltimore bullpen couldn't close things out. Baz is still struggling to find the strike zone, however, and he's issued at least three free passes in four straight outings. He'll take a 4.87 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 48:25 K:BB through 57.1 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come at home early next week in a rematch with Tampa Bay.

  • Gleyber Torres 2B | DET

Tigers' Gleyber Torres: Still unable to swing at full speed

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday that Torres (oblique) is still unable to swing a bat at full effort, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Torres' left oblique strain no longer gives him any trouble during fielding drills, but the second baseman will not be sent out on a rehab assignment until he can swing a bat at full speed without discomfort. It should be a quick turnaround once Torres clears that hurdle, but for now he's in a holding pattern. Torres has been sidelined since early May.

  • Trea Turner SS | PHI

Phillies' Trea Turner: Busy on basepaths in loss

Turner went 1-for-2 with two walks, a run scored and two stolen bases in Wednesday's 9-4 loss to the Reds.

Both steals came off the battery of lefty Andrew Abbott and catcher P.J. Higgins, but the rest of the Phillies lineup couldn't do much with the opportunities Turner created. The shortstop has hit safely in seven straight games, batting .267 (8-for-30), scoring eight runs and collecting four of his nine steals on the season during that stretch.

  • Aaron Nola SP | PHI

Phillies' Aaron Nola: Stuck with fourth loss

Nola (2-4) took the loss Wednesday as the Phillies fell 9-4 to the Reds, giving up four runs on eight hits over five innings. He struck out five without walking a batter.

The veteran right-hander got tagged for three runs in the second inning, and while he left the mound after 77 pitches (55 strikes) having not served a homer or issued any free passes, the Phillies weren't able to climb out of that early hole. Nola has failed to record an out in the sixth inning in six of his last seven starts, and last year's struggles may have simply been a harbinger of further decline. Nola will take a 6.04 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 51:18 K:BB through 50.2 innings into his next outing, which will come on the road early next week in San Diego.

  • Luis Torrens DH | NYM

Mets' Luis Torrens: Resting up Wednesday

Torrens is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports.

The Mets will give Torrens a breather after he started behind the plate in four of the past five games. Hayden Senger will handle catching duties for the Mets on Wednesday, forming a battery with Zach Thornton in the rookie lefty's MLB debut.

  • Sal Stewart 1B | CIN

Reds' Sal Stewart: Powers win with huge day

Stewart went 4-for-5 with a double, a two-run home run and two additional runs scored in Wednesday's 9-4 win over the Phillies.

The rookie slugger continues to break out of a slump, racking up nine hits, including two homers, over his last four games without striking out once. The surge has boosted Stewart's slash line on the season back up to .265/.353/.503 with 12 long balls, 10 steals, 31 runs and 34 RBI in 50 contests.

  • Andrew Abbott SP | CIN

Reds' Andrew Abbott: Collects fourth win

Abbott (4-2) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks over 5.1 innings in a 9-4 victory over the Phillies. He struck out three.

The southpaw dealt with traffic on the bases in every inning before finally being lifted after 96 pitches (64 strikes) following a solo shot by Alec Bohm, but the Reds gave Abbott more than enough run support to record his third straight win and fourth straight winning decision. He's given up two earned runs or fewer in all five of his outings during that latter stretch, posting a 1.29 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 19:13 K:BB over his last 28 innings. Abbott will look to keep rolling in his next start, which lines up to come on the road early next week against the Mets.

  • Henry Davis C | PIT

Pirates' Henry Davis: Taking seat Wednesday

Davis is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals.

Davis will head to the bench after starting behind the plate in each of the previous three games while going 0-for-9 with two strikeouts. Now batting just .137 on the season, Davis could be at risk of falling into more of a timeshare at catcher with Endy Rodriguez, who draws the starting nod Wednesday.

  • Jared Triolo 3B | PIT

Pirates' Jared Triolo: Streak of starts ends

Triolo is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals.

Triolo will head to the bench after wrapping up a six-game stretch in which he made two starts apiece at three different positions -- first base, third base and right field -- and went a collective 7-for-18 with a walk, a stolen base, an RBI and a run. The Pirates should have a regular spot in the lineup available for Triolo against left-handed pitching, but his playing time versus righties may be more sporadic. Pittsburgh has an opening in its everyday lineup while Ryan O'Hearn (quadriceps) is on the shelf, but manager Don Kelly could prefer to rotate the likes of Triolo, Jake Mangum and Jhostynxon Garcia at that spot rather than leaning exclusively on one player.

  • Marcell Ozuna DH | PIT

Pirates' Marcell Ozuna: Absent from Pittsburgh lineup

Ozuna is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game in St. Louis.

The Cardinals are sending Michael McGreevy to the bump, marking the second time in a row that the right-handed-hitting Ozuna has been absent from the lineup against a righty. Oneil Cruz will get a start at designated hitter for the Pirates, and Jhostynxon Garcia will patrol center field.
