Sean Hjelle was jettisoned back-and-forth between Triple-A Sacramento and the Giants multiple times last season. He was unsuccessful in both spots, collecting a 6.52 ERA in 15 relief appearances with the big club and a 6.00 ERA in 22 outings (19 starts) with Sacramento. All 23 of the 6-foot-11 right-hander's appearances in the majors have come in relief, and while the run prevention hasn't been there, he has struck out 59 in 54 innings. At this point, if Hjelle is going to have a prominent gig with San Francisco it seems likely to be in relief, perhaps in a multi-inning role. It's not a job that figures to bear fantasy fruit.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Takes loss Wednesday

Hjelle (0-1) took the loss versus the Mets on Wednesday, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk while striking out two over 2.2 innings. Blake Snell (thigh) was placed on the injured list Wednesday, forcing the Giants to go with a bullpen game. Hjelle ended up with the most innings of the seven pitchers used, but he was unable to match his success from his season debut Sunday versus the Diamondbacks, when he pitched two innings of one-hit ball. The right-hander was on the shelf with an elbow injury to begin the season, and he'll likely serve as a long reliever for the majority of 2024.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Taken off injured list

The Giants activated Hjelle (elbow) from the 15-day injured list Saturday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Hjelle has shown steady improvement during his rehab assignment, and in his last outing with Triple-A Sacramento on April 17, he struck out two while allowing one hit over one scoreless inning. The right-hander will return to the Giants' bullpen and figures to step into a low-leverage relief role. San Francisco optioned Kai-Wei Teng to Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Excelling on rehab assignment

Hjelle made the fifth appearance of his rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Sacramento, striking out two while allowing one hit over a scoreless inning. Hjelle was placed on the 15-day injured list prior to Opening Day due to a mild right elbow strain, but he appears to be bouncing back from the injury well based on how he's fared on his rehab assignment thus far. Between stops with Sacramento and Single-A San Jose, The right-hander has permitted two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out seven over 5.1 innings. Hjelle seems to be preparing for a relief role with the Giants once he returns from the IL, though if San Francisco elects to option him to Sacramento upon his activation, he could get stretched back out to start.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Shelved with elbow strain

The Giants placed Hjelle (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Hjelle has resumed throwing off the mound since being shut down earlier this month with a mild right elbow sprain, but he's still likely to face an uphill battle to make it back from the 15-day injured list April 9 when first eligible. At this stage, Alex Cobb (hip) seems to be ahead of Hjelle in his throwing progression, as Cobb threw 40 pitches in a minor-league spring training game last weekend. If Cobb beats Hjelle back from the IL, the latter would likely have to settle for a long-relief role or a rotation spot at Triple-A Sacramento upon being activated.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Resuming throwing program

Hjelle (elbow) will begin a throwing program Saturday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Hjelle was shut down for a week after being diagnosed with a partial UCL tear in his right elbow. While the hope is that he will able to avoid surgery on the elbow, it's no sure thing as he attempts to ramp back up.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Shut down for one week

Hjelle received a second opinion on his right elbow Friday and will be shut down from throwing for one week, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The 26-year-old was expected to be shut down for at least a couple weeks after being diagnosed with a UCL sprain earlier this week, so the second opinion appears to have brought encouraging news. Hjelle still figures to begin the season on the injured list, but the shorter shutdown should allow for a quicker return.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Diagnosed with sprained UCL

Hjelle will be shut down for a couple weeks after being diagnosed with a right elbow sprain, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Hjelle had been in position to win either a long relief job or potentially even a spot in the rotation, but now he has what could be a long-term injury. He'll be re-evaluated following the shutdown period, presumably at which point a decision will be made as to whether he needs surgery.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Could shift into rotation

Giants manager Bob Melvin said Thursday that Hjelle is a candidate to move into the rotation with Tristan Beck (arm) sidelined, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The Giants' starting pitching depth already seemed shaky and is now further thinned out with Beck out indefinitely due to an aneurysm in his upper arm. Melvin would prefer to keep Hjelle in long relief but now has no choice to consider him as a rotation option. The Giants also figure to look for help outside the organization. All 23 of Hjelle's major-league appearances have come in relief, but they've often covered multiple innings, and he was a starter almost exclusively in the minors.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Preparing for long relief

Hjelle is expected to function as a long reliever in 2024, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Hjelle came up through the minors as a starter, but all 23 of his major-league appearances so far have come out of the bullpen. The right-hander is not stretching out as a starter this spring, which signals he'll be a multi-inning option out of the bullpen. That role comes with little fantasy interest, especially since it doesn't seem like manager Bob Melvin will deploy an opener as often as his predecessor, Gabe Kapler.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Optioned to Sacramento

The Giants optioned Hjelle to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday. Hjelle surrendered six earned runs on 10 hits over 4.2 innings of long relief in Monday's series opener against the Phillies. He carries an 8.59 ERA across 22 total major-league innings this year.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Recalled from Triple-A

The Giants recalled Hjelle from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. With Ross Stripling (back) headed for the injured list, Hjelle will come up from the minors to add extra depth to San Francisco's pitching staff. The 26-year-old righty has struggled this season in both the majors and minors, and he likely will be limited to low-leverage situations while with the Giants.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Sent to Triple-A

Hjelle was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday. He had an effective appearance Wednesday against the Padres, logging four scoreless innings while striking out five in relief en route to the win. That was easily Hjelle's best MLB appearance of the season, as he entered the game with a 10.13 ERA. He could be back up the next time the Giants need a fresh multi-inning arm.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Earns win in bulk-relief outing

Hjelle (2-1) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out five over four scoreless innings to earn the win Wednesday over the Padres. Hjelle followed opener Ryan Walker, who tossed a scoreless first inning. This was Hjelle's first outing since his call-up from Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, and it was just his fourth scoreless effort in 11 major-league appearances on the season. The right-hander has struggled to a 7.79 ERA, 2.08 WHIP and 21:12 K:BB through 17.1 innings. The Giants appear set to continue patching the holes in their rotation with long-relief outings from pitchers like Hjelle, Tristan Beck, Keaton Winn, Sean Manaea and Jakob Junis. With so many multi-inning options available, it's unclear when Hjelle might next take the mound.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Recalled from Sacramento

The Giants recalled Hjelle from Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. With the placement of Scott Alexander (hamstring) on the 15-day injured list Monday, Hjelle will be called on to replace Alexander in the bullpen. The 26-year-old righty holds a 10.13 ERA and 2.33 WHIP through 13.1 innings in the majors this season, and he's been used exclusively out of the bullpen with the Giants despite serving as a starter in Triple-A.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Dispatched to Triple-A

The Giants optioned Hjelle to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Hjelle was hammered for five earned runs on three hits and three walks in a one-inning relief appearance Monday against the Astros. Cole Waites will fill the vacant spot in the Giants bullpen Tuesday at Houston.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Melts down Monday

Hjelle (1-1) allowed five runs on three hits and three walks over one inning, taking the loss Monday versus the Astros. Hjelle got the last out of the sixth inning without trouble, but the Astros found some success with small ball against him in the seventh. Through 10 appearances, Hjelle has struggled to pitch consistently -- he's been charged with at least one run in seven of those outings. He has a 10.13 ERA, 2.33 WHIP and 16:10 K:BB across 13.1 innings and will likely see most of his action in low-leverage spots for as long as he's on the big-league roster.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Grabs first win of year

Hjelle (1-0) allowed one hit and plunked a batter but threw a scoreless ninth to pick up the win over the Cardinals on Tuesday. Hjelle came in to pitch the ninth with the Giants down two runs and did his job to keep them within striking distance. His offense would rally for three runs in the bottom of the frame to walk it off and get him his first win of the year. The 25-year-old has made five appearances since being called back up from Triple-A Sacramento on April 14 and owns a 4.50 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 6:1 K:BB over six innings over that span.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Recalled from Triple-A

Hjelle was recalled Friday from Triple-A Sacramento, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Hjelle was just sent down Wednesday, but the Giants had an opening on their 26-man roster after having to place outfielder Bryce Johnson on the 7-day concussion IL. Hjelle will get another look out of the bullpen.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Optioned to Triple-A

Helle was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento by the Giants on Wednesday. Hjelle gets the boot from the major-league roster to make room for Darin Ruf after Ruf's contract was selected by the Giants. The 6-foot-11 right-hander will likely be an up-and-down option for the San Francisco bullpen for the remainder of 2023.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Denied Opening Day roster spot

The Giants optioned Hjelle to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday. With Anthony DeSclafani finishing spring training healthy after initially being eased while he worked back from last July's ankle surgery, he appears set to serve as the Giants' long-relief option and preferred spot starter. The presence of DeSclafani and another multi-inning relief option in Jakob Junis leaves no room for Hjelle, who sputtered to a 5.76 ERA and 1.64 WHIP over 25 innings in the big leagues a season ago.
