Hjelle was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Monday.

Hjelle was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday.
Hjelle has had a rough 2023, posting an 8.59 ERA with the Giants and a 6.03 mark with Sacramento. He can give them some length out of the bullpen, though, which is needed.

Giants' Sean Hjelle: Recalled from Triple-A
The Giants recalled Hjelle from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
With Ross Stripling (back) headed for the injured list, Hjelle will come up from the minors to add extra depth to San Francisco's pitching staff. The 26-year-old righty has struggled this season in both the majors and minors, and he likely will be limited to low-leverage situations while with the Giants.

Giants' Sean Hjelle: Sent to Triple-A
Hjelle was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday.
He had an effective appearance Wednesday against the Padres, logging four scoreless innings while striking out five in relief en route to the win. That was easily Hjelle's best MLB appearance of the season, as he entered the game with a 10.13 ERA. He could be back up the next time the Giants need a fresh multi-inning arm.

Giants' Sean Hjelle: Earns win in bulk-relief outing
Hjelle (2-1) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out five over four scoreless innings to earn the win Wednesday over the Padres.
Hjelle followed opener Ryan Walker, who tossed a scoreless first inning. This was Hjelle's first outing since his call-up from Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, and it was just his fourth scoreless effort in 11 major-league appearances on the season. The right-hander has struggled to a 7.79 ERA, 2.08 WHIP and 21:12 K:BB through 17.1 innings. The Giants appear set to continue patching the holes in their rotation with long-relief outings from pitchers like Hjelle, Tristan Beck, Keaton Winn, Sean Manaea and Jakob Junis. With so many multi-inning options available, it's unclear when Hjelle might next take the mound.

Giants' Sean Hjelle: Recalled from Sacramento
The Giants recalled Hjelle from Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
With the placement of Scott Alexander (hamstring) on the 15-day injured list Monday, Hjelle will be called on to replace Alexander in the bullpen. The 26-year-old righty holds a 10.13 ERA and 2.33 WHIP through 13.1 innings in the majors this season, and he's been used exclusively out of the bullpen with the Giants despite serving as a starter in Triple-A.

Giants' Sean Hjelle: Dispatched to Triple-A
The Giants optioned Hjelle to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Giants' Sean Hjelle: Melts down Monday
Hjelle (1-1) allowed five runs on three hits and three walks over one inning, taking the loss Monday versus the Astros.
Hjelle got the last out of the sixth inning without trouble, but the Astros found some success with small ball against him in the seventh. Through 10 appearances, Hjelle has struggled to pitch consistently -- he's been charged with at least one run in seven of those outings. He has a 10.13 ERA, 2.33 WHIP and 16:10 K:BB across 13.1 innings and will likely see most of his action in low-leverage spots for as long as he's on the big-league roster.

Giants' Sean Hjelle: Grabs first win of year
Hjelle (1-0) allowed one hit and plunked a batter but threw a scoreless ninth to pick up the win over the Cardinals on Tuesday.
Hjelle came in to pitch the ninth with the Giants down two runs and did his job to keep them within striking distance. His offense would rally for three runs in the bottom of the frame to walk it off and get him his first win of the year. The 25-year-old has made five appearances since being called back up from Triple-A Sacramento on April 14 and owns a 4.50 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 6:1 K:BB over six innings over that span.

Hjelle gets the boot from the major-league roster to make room for Darin Ruf after Ruf's contract was selected by the Giants. The 6-foot-11 right-hander will likely be an up-and-down option for the San Francisco bullpen for the remainder of 2023.

Giants' Sean Hjelle: Denied Opening Day roster spot
The Giants optioned Hjelle to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday.
With Anthony DeSclafani finishing spring training healthy after initially being eased while he worked back from last July's ankle surgery, he appears set to serve as the Giants' long-relief option and preferred spot starter. The presence of DeSclafani and another multi-inning relief option in Jakob Junis leaves no room for Hjelle, who sputtered to a 5.76 ERA and 1.64 WHIP over 25 innings in the big leagues a season ago.

Giants' Sean Hjelle: Looks set for bullpen role
Hjelle appears to be in line for a spot in the Giants' Opening Day bullpen, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Hjelle has covered 15 innings over five Cactus League outings, pitching to an excellent 1.80 ERA and 18:2 K:BB. The Giants' rotation remains crowded even with concerns around Alex Cobb's knee, but Hjelle should get a chance to be a long reliever or tandem starter early in the season. The right-hander made all eight of his major-league appearances out of the bullpen last season, but he's worked exclusively as a starter in the minors.

Giants' Sean Hjelle: Impressing this spring
Hjelle has allowed two earned runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out 10 over eight innings through three Cactus League appearances.
That's the good news, but as a 25-year-old with all of 25 big-league innings under his belt, Hjelle faces an uphill battle in a crowded competition for a job in the San Francisco rotation. The right-hander logged a 5.76 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB across eight appearances last season, all as a bulk reliever, though he also started 22 times for Triple-A Sacramento and posted a 4.92 ERA and 1.55 WHIP over 97 innings at that level. Hjelle likely needs a bit more time in the minors, but it's encouraging to see him flash some potential in spring training.

Giants' Sean Hjelle: Fans eight in bulk-relief role
Hjelle did not factor in the decision against San Diego on Monday, pitching five scoreless innings during which he allowed four hits and one walk while striking out eight batters.
John Brebbia started for San Francisco but pitched only one inning. Hjelle ended up logging a starter's workload, throwing 76 pitches over five frames and holding the Padres without a run. It marked the second time this season the right-hander tossed five innings in relief, and his eight strikeouts Monday were a season high. Hjelle has pitched well over his past three appearances, giving up just three earned runs across 13 innings, but a pair of blowups prior to that means he'll likely finish his rookie campaign with an unappealing 5.76 ERA and 1.64 WHIP.

Hjelle was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
The 25-year-old was demoted to Sacramento on Saturday but will quickly rejoin the big-league club. Hjelle could provide some length out of the bullpen Sunday with Scott Alexander starting as an opener against the Diamondbacks.
