There was speculation, back in early-to-mid February, that Texas might make a coaching change after the season because the Longhorns appeared on the verge of missing the NCAA Tournament for the third time in five years under Shaka Smart. But when Texas started to turn things around and look like an NCAA Tournament team, I made the point on the Eye On College Basketball Podcast that it would be wiser to keep Smart because he had a chance to return his entire roster and enroll five-star stud Greg Brown — and I just couldn't understand why a school should spend millions and millions of dollars to buy out the contract of a coach who was set to enter the subsequent season with a nationally ranked team.
And now here we are.
Everything has gone as planned.
Texas decided against making a coaching change, Smart kept his roster intact and, on Friday, Brown announced he'll join the Longhorns thanks in part to his relationship with Smart. The 6-foot-9 forward picked UT over offers from Auburn, Kentucky, Memphis and Michigan. Joining the G-League like fellow five-star prospect Jalen Green was also an option -- but Brown passed.
If you've been following updates of the 2020-21 Preseason Top 25 And 1, you should know that Brown has always been projected to enroll at Texas. So his announcement doesn't change anything with these rankings; the Longhorns were No. 18 in Version 9.0 and will remain there. But Brown's announcement does remove one question from the long list of questions still hanging over the sport. So, in that regard, it is a meaningful development that doubles as a sense of relief for the Texas staff.
What I've done with these rankings is assume all consensus projected first-round picks will enter the NBA Draft, made educated guesses about other underclassmen, and omitted (for now) all traditional sit-out transfers. As always, when I need to adjust, I'll adjust. Version 10.0 is likely right around the corner. But, at this moment, Mark Few's Gonzaga Bulldogs are No. 1 in the Top 25 And 1 based on the idea that everybody who can return from a team that finished 31-2 will return from a team that finished 31-2. If that happens, the Zags will be led by All-American Filip Petrusev, have three of their top five scorers back, and benefit from a top-10 recruiting class highlighted by five-star guard Jalen Suggs.
(NOTE: For those who have asked, right now, Florida would be No. 27, Indiana would be No. 28, Louisville would be No. 29, and Michigan would be No. 30 if this were the Top 25 And 5.)
