Mattheos -- who was selected by the Canes in the third round of the 2017 NHL Draft -- is still waiting to make his NHL debut. Since turning pro following the 2018-19 campaign, the 23-year-old blueliner has struggled to produce offensively, compiling a combined 21 points in 77 AHL games. Mattheos was diagnosed with testicular cancer back in June. His addition to the Hurricanes' camp roster is an indication that the 20-year-old is nearing a return, but it remains to be seen what exactly the plan is for Mattheos moving forward. Mattheos will miss training camp as he completes treatments for testicular cancer.
Mattheos was diagnosed with testicular cancer just two days after helping AHL Charlotte win the Calder Cup in June. The 20-year-old has since undergone surgery and completed several rounds of chemotherapy, and is expected to return to full health after his treatment is complete. With 26 goals (including 13 power-play tallies) and and 48 points through his first 31 games this season, Mattheos has quickly developed into one of the WHL's most dangerous players. A 2017 third-round selection of Carolina, Mattheos was drafted on the strength of his smarts and defensive play, so this offensive success is nice to see.
