  • Matthew Wright: Back to practice squad

Wright reverted to the Panthers' practice squad Monday.

Wright was elevated to the active roster ahead of Sunday's 9-0 loss to the Buccaneers, missing his only field-goal attempt from 52 yards in the contest. The kicker spent the 2023 campaign on and off of multiple practice squads, and he will look to earn an active roster spot in 2024.

  • Panthers' Matthew Wright: Set to kick Sunday

Wright is active for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers and will serve as the team's kicker in Week 18, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.

Wright will fill in for Eddy Pineiro, who sustained a hamstring injury early in last week's 26-0 loss to the Jaguars and won't be available for the finale. The 27-year-old Wright last kicked for the Steelers in 2022, suiting up four times and making 12 of 14 field-goal attempts.

  • Panthers' Matthew Wright: Elevated to active roster

The Panthers elevated Wright to the active roster Saturday, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.

The move comes with Eddy Pineiro (hamstring) listed as doubtful ahead of Sunday's regular-season finale against the Buccaneers. Wright has jumped around multiple practice squads this season before linking up with the Panthers on Tuesday. He'll suit up for Week 18 if Pineiro is ruled out.

  • Matthew Wright: Joins Panthers' practice squad

The Panthers signed Wright to their practice squad Tuesday, Darin Gantt of the team's official site reports.

Carolina is bringing in a kicker after current option Eddy Pineiro was unable to play this past Sunday at Jacksonville due to a tight hamstring that he suffered during pregame warmups. Wright spent most of August with the Panthers before getting cut as a part of roster reduction after the preseason, and since then he's spent time on the 49ers', Falcons' and Patriots' practice squads. If the team ends up needing his services Sunday against the Buccaneers, it'll mark his first action of the campaign after he connected on 15 of 18 field-goal attempts and all 15 point-after tries in six appearances between the Steelers and Chiefs last season.

  • Matthew Wright: Cut by New England

The Patriots cut Wright from their practice squad Friday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.

The 27-year-old kicker was brought in just over a week ago after Chad Ryland missed 35-yard field-goal attempts in back-to-back games, but the team has now decided to part ways with Wright. New England saw Ryland go three-for-three on extra-point attempts during Thursday night's win over the Steelers, so this move could be a vote of confidence in the first-year kicker.

  • Matthew Wright: Cut by Panthers

Wright was waived by the Panthers on Saturday, Darin Gantt of the team's official website reports.

Wright was brought in by Carolina early in training camp to fill in for Eddy Pineiro (groin) while he was sidelined. It was made clear that Pineiro's job was not on the line, so Wright was simply there as a filler. He will now use his time there as a reference for other teams as he begins to seek out new employment opportunities.

  • Panthers' Matthew Wright: Finds new opportunity

Wright signed a contract with the Panthers on Tuesday.

Wright will get a chance in Carolina, because the expected starter, Eddy Pineiro, is currently dealing with a groin injury. Wright spent time filling in with both Kansas City and Pittsburgh last season, suiting up six times and combining to make 15 of his 18 field-goal attempts, as well as all 15 of his extra-point tries. Although he is unlikely to unseat Pineiro, he'll now possibly get an opportunity to audition for other teams during the preseason.
