Matthew Wright: Dropped by practice squad
The 49ers cut Wright from their practice squad Saturday.
Wright signed with San Francisco's practice squad Sept. 4, but his time with the unit will ultimately be cut short. He was being kept as a backup option for starting kicker Jake Moody. Wright will now be on the hunt for a new opportunity.... See More ... See Less
Matthew Wright: Joins San Francisco's practice unit
The 49ers signed Wright to their practice squad Monday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
With rookie third-rounder Jake Moody (quadriceps) currently questionable for Sunday's game at Pittsburgh, San Francisco could call on Wright to serve as its starting kicker in Week 1. In the meantime, he'll keep his leg warm on the practice squad.... See More ... See Less
Matthew Wright: Kicking for KC's practice squad
Wright has been added to the Chiefs' practice squad, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Wright was waived by the Panthers ahead of Tuesday's final roster cuts. He was brought in to Kansas City for kicking insurance, as Jake Moody (quadriceps) is uncertain for Week 1. The 27-year-old suited up for six games in 2022 between the Chiefs and Steelers.... See More ... See Less
Matthew Wright: Cut by Panthers
Wright was waived by the Panthers on Saturday, Darin Gantt of the team's official website reports.
Wright was brought in by Carolina early in training camp to fill in for Eddy Pineiro (groin) while he was sidelined. It was made clear that Pineiro's job was not on the line, so Wright was simply there as a filler. He will now use his time there as a reference for other teams as he begins to seek out new employment opportunities.... See More ... See Less
Panthers' Matthew Wright: Finds new opportunity
Wright signed a contract with the Panthers on Tuesday.
Wright will get a chance in Carolina, because the expected starter, Eddy Pineiro, is currently dealing with a groin injury. Wright spent time filling in with both Kansas City and Pittsburgh last season, suiting up six times and combining to make 15 of his 18 field-goal attempts, as well as all 15 of his extra-point tries. Although he is unlikely to unseat Pineiro, he'll now possibly get an opportunity to audition for other teams during the preseason.... See More ... See Less
Matthew Wright: Cut from practice squad
The Chiefs cut Wright from their practice squad Monday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
When Harrison Butker was dealing with back spasms during the regular season, Wright made two appearances for the Chiefs, connecting on 3-of-4 field-goal attempts and all eight of his extra-point tries. However, Wright hasn't played in a game since Week 13 and will lose his spot on the practice squad ahead of the Super Bowl. In a corresponding move, Kansas City re-signed Jerrion Ealy to its practice squad.... See More ... See Less
Matthew Wright: Moves back to practice squad
Wright reverted to the Chiefs' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Wright was brought up from the practice squad ahead of Saturday's game against the Raiders to serve as Kansas City's emergency kicker behind starter Harrison Butker, who was considered questionable to play with a back issue. However, with Butker available, the practice-squad kicker was ultimately ruled inactive pregame. Wright could be elevated again if Butker's health status either worsens or remains the same heading into the Chiefs' first playoff game during the divisional round of the playoffs.... See More ... Chiefs' Matthew Wright: Inactive Saturday
Wright (coach's decision) will not play Saturday against the Raiders, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
Harrison Butker is good to go, making Wright -- who was elevated from the practice squad Friday -- an unneeded luxury Saturday. It's entirely possible the team may have to follow the same cadence next week depending on how Butker's back is feeling after Week 18 action.... See More ... See Less
Matthew Wright: Back with Chiefs' practice squad
The Chiefs signed Wright to their practice squad Friday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
With Harrison Butker currently listed as questionable for Saturday's game against the Raiders due to a back issue, Wright will now provide additional kicking depth just in case the latter won't be available in Week 18. The 26-year-old appeared in two games for Kansas City earlier this year, converting three of his four field-goal attempts and all eight extra-point tries in that span. Wright then kicked for Pittsburgh across four games later in the season and went 12-for-14 on field-goal tries and 7-for-7 on extra-point attempts.... See More ... See Less
Chiefs' Matthew Wright: Added to roster, could kick Week 18
The Chiefs elevated Wright from the practice squad Friday, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
The fact that Kansas City is using one of its two allotted practice-squad elevations on Wright signals that Harrison Butker (back) -- who is listed as questionable -- may not play Saturday against the Raiders. If Butker is placed on the inactive list ahead of Saturday's 4:30 p.m. ET kickoff, Wright would step in to handle kicking duties for Kansas City. For fantasy leagues still playing out Week 18 that include a kicker spot, Wright could be worthy of a pickup, given that he'll be tied to one of the NFL's most prolific offenses. Moreover, unlike several teams playing this week, the Chiefs have something to play for, as a win over the Raiders or a Bills loss to the Patriots would lock Kansas City in as the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.... Matthew Wright: Works out for Kansas City
The Chiefs brought in Wright for a tryout Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Wright has spent the majority of the season either unsigned or on practice squads, though he's appeared in six games as a fill-in kicker for both Kansas City and Pittsburgh this season. The 26-year-old has been a reliable option, going 15-of-18 on his field-goal attempts while converting all 15 extra-point tries this season. With Chiefs starting kicker Harrison Butker dealing with back spasms, coach Andy Reid said "there's a chance" the team could add an extra kicker ahead of Saturday's regular-season finale versus Las Vegas, according to Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star. Wright's familiarity with the team from when he filled in with Butker out due to an ankle injury for two games should make him a top candidate to serve as the team's potential emergency kicker Week 18.... Matthew Wright: Let go by Pittsburgh
Wright was waived by the Steelers on Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Chris Boswell was activated off injured reserve following a lengthy absence due to a groin injury, making Wright's roster spot redundant. It was a solid stint for the fourth-year kicker, as Wright converted 12 of his 14 field-goal attempts, including going 6-of-7 from 40-plus yards. Expect Wright to wind up on a practice squad before season's end.... See More ... See Less
Steelers' Matthew Wright: Perfect against Atlanta
Wright converted all four of his field-goal attempts while making his lone extra-point try during the Steelers' 19-16 win over Atlanta on Sunday.
Wright's first field goal of Sunday's matchup ricocheted off the right upright before going in, but the 26-year-old was perfect for a third consecutive week to lead the Steelers to a second straight win. Over his last three appearances, he's made all 10 of his field-goal attempts while converting all five of his extra-point tries. Chris Boswell (groin) is eligible to return as early as next week, but the Steelers haven't yet indicated when they expect him to be back in action. Until Boswell is healthy, expect Wright to retain kicking duties for Pittsburgh.... See More ... See Less
Steelers' Matthew Wright: Perfect once again
Wright converted all three of his field-goal attempts while making his lone extra-point try during the Steelers' 24-17 win over the Colts on Monday.
Wright missed two field-goal attempts during his Steelers debut against the Saints in Week 10, but he's converted all 10 of his kicks over the last two weeks, including a 52-yard attempt during Monday's primetime win. He'll likely continue to serve as Pittsburgh's kicker next week against Atlanta, but his role after Week 13 likely depends on when Chris Boswell (groin) is cleared to return from injured reserve....
