  • Jaret Patterson: Joins Chargers' practice squad

Patterson signed with the Chargers' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.

Patterson was let go by the Bolts in late August after failing to make the team's initial 53-man roster, but he's now found a spot on the practice squad. The 24-year-old running back's last regular-season action came in 2022 with the Commanders, when he appeared in three games and recorded 78 rushing yards on 17 attempts.

  • Jaret Patterson: Waived by Bolts

The Chargers waived Patterson on Thursday.

Patterson made the Chargers' initial 53-man roster, but he was subsequently cut after the team claimed fellow RB Hassan Haskins on waivers. Also in the Los Angeles backfield mix ahead of Week 1 are Gus Edwards, J.K. Dobbins and rookie Kimani Vidal.

  • Chargers' Jaret Patterson: First RB with touch Saturday

Patterson had four carries for 10 yards while catching all five of his targets for 28 yards in Saturday's 13-9 preseason loss to the Rams.

Patterson was the first back deployed by the Chargers sans J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards while the projected top duo continues to sit until the regular season. Rookie Kimani Vidal (11-49-0) had a strong showing Saturday as both young backs continue to battle for spots and roles behind the aforementioned veteran transplants from Baltimore. Expect Patterson to see more work in the Chargers' final preseason tilt against the Cowboys next Saturday.

  • Chargers' Jaret Patterson: Pushing for No. 3 job

Patterson is believed to be the leading candidate for the Chargers' No. 3 running back job, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.

According to Popper, Patterson has gotten the most reps with the first-team offense behind J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards while notably running ahead of Kimani Vidal, Isaiah Spiller and Elijah Dotson. Patterson was also the first running back to get into the Chargers' first preseason game this past Saturday against the Seahawks, finishing with seven carries for 38 yards. Patterson spent most of the 2023 season on Los Angeles' practice squad before a short stint back in Washington. He has 85 career carries for 344 yards and two touchdowns, with each of his 20 career appearances coming in a Washington uniform.

  • Chargers' Jaret Patterson: Tallies 42 yards in preseason loss

Patterson carried the ball seven times for 38 yards and also caught one of his two targets for four yards in Saturday's 16-3 preseason loss to the Seahawks.

Patterson started the game at running back due to Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins both being healthy inactives and continued to see time until early in the third quarter. Los Angeles' offense as a whole struggled to move the ball, especially in the first 30 minutes of the game, as Patterson's long of 16 yards came near the end of the first half with Seattle playing a prevent defense of sorts, content to let the Chargers effectively run out the clock. Neither Elijah Dotson (three carries, seven yards) nor Isaiah Spiller (five carries, five yards) did much with their limited opportunities on the ground, and it's worth noting intriguing rookie Kimani Vidal also was held out of the exhibition, which appeared to be a coach's decision.

  • Chargers' Jaret Patterson: Taking some first-team reps

Patterson got a lot of first-team snaps during practice Thursday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.

With Gus Edwards (undisclosed) limited to individual drills and sixth-round pick Kimani Vidal working with the backups, J.K. Dobbins and Patterson seem to be getting most of the first-team RB snaps early in training camp. Patterson nonetheless seems more likely to find himself on the roster bubble than competing for a significant Week 1 role, considering he went undrafted back in 2021 and didn't make a regular-season appearance last year. He spent most of 2022 on the Commanders' practice squad and most of 2023 on the Chargers' practice squad.

  • Chargers' Jaret Patterson: Joins Chargers

The Chargers signed Patterson to a reserve/future deal Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Patterson wasn't able to make his way onto the field this season, but he'll now get a chance to compete for a spot on the Chargers' 53-man roster for 2024. He probably lacks the size to ever take on a workhorse role.

  • Jaret Patterson: Latches on with Washington

Patterson signed with the Commanders' practice squad Tuesday.

The Commanders are dealing with injuries throughout their backfield, as Brian Robinson (hamstring), Chris Rodriguez (ankle) and Jonathan Williams (concussion) are all banged up. Patterson played in 20 games for Washington across the 2021-22 seasons, rushing 85 times for 344 yards and two touchdowns.

  • Jaret Patterson: Loses his spot

Patterson was cut from the Chargers' practice squad Wednesday, Kris Rhim of ESPN.com reports.

Patterson has been on the team's practice squad since Sept. 13, but he never received an elevation to the active roster. The 23-year-old will work to find a new opportunity before the 2023 campaign comes to a close.

  • Jaret Patterson: Gets new opportunity

Patterson signed with the Chargers' practice squad Wednesday.

Patterson spent camp with the Commanders, as well as the previous two seasons, but was unable to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. He'll now be an emergency option for Los Angeles, while he tries to earn a permanent spot on their active roster.

  • Jaret Patterson: Let go by Washington

The Commanders are slated to waive Patterson on Monday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.

Patterson made a case for a spot on Washington's final roster when he turned eight carries into 51 yards in the team's preseason finale, but he nonetheless will be subject to waivers before searching for an opportunity elsewhere. However, Patterson could have earned himself a call back via the practice squad.

  • Commanders' Jaret Patterson: Makes final case for spot

Patterson took eight carries for 51 yards in Saturday's 21-19 preseason loss to the Bengals.

Patterson was the third back into the game, after Chris Rodriguez and Jonathan Williams, on a night that saw both Antonio Gibson and Brian Robinson rested. Patterson thus appears unlikely to have a spot on the Week 1 roster, perhaps sticking around via the practice squad instead.

  • Commanders' Jaret Patterson: Leading rusher against Dallas

Patterson carried the ball 17 times for 78 yards and failed to catch his only target in Sunday's 26-6 win over the Cowboys.

Brian Robinson (knee) was inactive for the Commanders' season finale, so Patterson found himself as the primary option in the team's backfield after not getting a touch through the first 17 weeks, and he used the opportunity to establish a new career high in rushing yards for the game. Robinson's strong second half all but ensures he'll be the team's top RB in 2023, but if Antonio Gibson (knee/foot) gets moved in the offseason, Patterson could enter next season in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, giving the 2021 undrafted free agent some possible deep-league fantasy intrigue.
