Lions' C.J. Gardner-Johnson: Could return this season
Coach Dan Campbell said there's a "chance" Gardner-Johnson (pectoral) plays again this season, Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com reports.
Gardner-Johnson was placed on injured reserve Tuesday. Eric Woodyard of ESPN reports that the Lions at one point feared Gardner-Johnson had suffered a torn pectoral, but Campbell isn't ruling out a return for the standout safety, yet. For at least the foreseeable future, though, Tracy Walker figures to take on an expanded role for Detroit's secondary.

Gardner-Johnson exited the Lions' Week 2 contest a little worse for wear and could be looking at a season-ending injury. Lions' C.J. Gardner-Johnson: Headed to IR
Detroit placed Gardner-Johnson (pectoral) on its injured reserve list Tuesday.
There's still no concrete timetable for his return, but this move means Gardner-Johnson won't be eligible to play again until October 22 at Baltimore at the earliest. If he indeed is dealing with a ruptured pectoral as has been rumored, he could be out for the rest of the season. For now, Tracy Walker should be expected to take on an expanded role in his absence.

Lions' C.J. Gardner-Johnson: Working with rehab group
Head coach Dan Campbell noted Friday that Gardner-Johnson, who suffered a knee injury in team drills Monday, is "improving" but is still day-to-day, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Gardner-Johnson had to be carted off the field after suffering a non-contact injury, but the good news for him and the Lions is that the MRI revealed no structural damage to his right knee. He's being held out of team drills but is stretching and working with the rehab group in the meantime. Gardner-Johnson was one of the Lions' top free agent additions in the offseason after signing a one-year, $8 million contract in March and will be a key piece for a Detroit defense that allowed the most yards per game (392.4) and third-most points allowed per game (25.1) last season.

Gardner-Johnson's MRI revealed no structural damage to his right knee, a huge relief considering the severity often associated with non-contact knee injuries. Based on reports that Gardner-Johnson is day-to-day, he could even return without missing a substantial amount of training camp. He's primed for an integral role in Detroit's secondary once he's healthy.

Lions' C.J. Gardner-Johnson: Injury may not be serious
The Lions are optimistic that Gardner-Johnson (knee) has avoided a severe injury, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Gardner-Johnson was carted off the practice field due to a non-contact injury Monday, but one source told Pelissero that "he's fine." That would be exceptional news for Detroit's secondary, as Gardner-Johnson was one of the team's top offseason additions in free agency. Further testing should confirm the severity of Gardner-Johnson's injury in the near future.

Lions' C.J. Gardner-Johnson: Suffers non-contact injury
Gardner-Johnson was carted off the field Monday due to a non-contact injury, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Gardner-Johnson's injury was not caused by contact, a potentially disastrous development for Detroit's biggest free-agency addition on defense. The veteran cornerback had taken first-team reps at slot cornerback this offseason and also was expected to contribute at safety, so it will be a brutal blow for the Lions secondary if he ends up missing significant time.

Lions' C.J. Gardner-Johnson: Working at slot cornerback
Gardner-Johnson has taken first-team reps at slot cornerback during offseason practices, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
While proving his worth on a one-year deal, Gardner-Johnson is expected to handle a starting role for a revamped Lions secondary. He may also see time at safety, but Detroit is well stocked at that position with Tracy Walker and a pair of recent Day 2 draft picks, Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, on the depth chart.
