Smith was waived by the Cavaliers on Saturday, Keith Smith of Spotrac.com reports.
Smith put pen to paper on an Exhibit 10 contract Sept. 15, and he was unsurprisingly cut loose ahead of the 2023-23 season. He'll be a favorite to report to the Cleveland Charge after clearing waivers.

Detroit acquired Smith from Philadelphia on Nov. 22, and the expectation all along was that he'd eventually be waived. The Pistons made it official Monday, parting ways with the 2018 first-round pick out of Texas Tech. Through two seasons, Smith has appeared in just 13 NBA games.

The Pistons intend to waive Smith (knee), who was acquired Sunday in a trade with the 76ers, Vincent Goodwill of The Detroit News reports.
Detroit sent center Tony Bradley to Philadelphia in exchange for Smith, a 2018 first-round pick who has played in just 13 NBA games while battling a variety of health issues over his first two professional seasons. While the 21-year-old would seemingly be an ideal developmental prospect for a rebuilding club, the Pistons apparently have other players who rank as higher priorities for spots at the back end of the roster. Smith didn't accompany the 76ers to the NBA bubble in Orlando this summer due to a bone bruise in his left knee, but he should be ready to go for the start of the 2020-21 campaign.

The start of Smith's NBA career continues to be riddled with injuries, as he's appeared in just 13 contests through his first two professional seasons. The 2019 first-round pick began experiencing pain in the knee during workouts last week and has been undergoing treatment in the days since. At this point, the Sixers expect Smith to be at full strength by the time the start of the 2020-21 season rolls around. The Texas Tech product saw action in just seven games for Philadelphia prior to the shutdown, totaling eight points, two rebounds, two assists and three steals in 32 minutes.

76ers' Zhaire Smith: May have long-term stay in G League
G League Delaware coach Connor Johnson said Sunday that he expects Smith to remain with the affiliate for the foreseeable future before rejoining the 76ers once the regular season ends, Ky Carlin of USA Today reports.
The 2018 first-round pick has stayed healthy this season after missing extensive action as a rookie, but the playoff-contending 76ers simply don't have a spot in the rotation for Smith. As a result, he's made several appearances in the G League throughout the season to pick up playing time, and it looks like that plan will remain in place for the next month. Smith may rejoin the 76ers on a few occasions before the regular season concludes, but likely just as a depth option rather than as a rotation player.

Smith had 16 points (7-16 FG, 2-7 3Pt, 0-1 FT), six rebounds, two assists and one steal over 31 minutes in Thursday's G League loss to Wisconsin.
