Luzardo didn't factor in the decision Tuesday in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series against Atlanta. He gave up a run on three hits and one walk while striking out six across five innings.
Luzardo fired one scoreless inning out of the bullpen Sunday versus the Rays as he returned to a big-league mound after missing most of September due to shoulder inflammation, so it was quite impressive to see him in such strong form Tuesday while making his first start in three weeks. The left-hander threw 77 pitches (48 strikes) and generated 11 whiffs in what was the best playoff start of his big-league career. Luzardo closed the regular season with a 2.86 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 221:52 K:BB across 179.2 innings. The Phillies will need to win the next two games for him to make another start this year.

Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly said Monday that Luzardo will be an opener for Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series in Atlanta on Tuesday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
Luzardo has not started a game in three weeks, having missed time down the stretch of the regular season with left shoulder inflammation. However, the southpaw returned for the Phillies' regular-season finale Sunday and tossed a perfect inning against the Rays. While Luzardo could be capable of covering multiple frames Tuesday, it will not be a traditional start. Andrew Painter will be available out of the bullpen Tuesday and could absorb the bulk of the workload in Game 1.

Luzardo was shut down for nine days due to left shoulder inflammation, but he was cleared to play catch after the stiffness dissipated and he regained range of motion in the shoulder. The left-hander will not return from the 15-day injured list before the end of the regular season, but the Phillies are "very optimistic" about Luzardo's progress, per president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. If Luzardo is ready for the wild-card round, the Phillies could use him in a relief role since he won't have his stamina rebuilt enough to start.
The Phillies are placing Luzardo (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The transaction is retroactive to Sept. 12.
The left-hander was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against Atlanta due to shoulder stiffness and inflammation, and he's still experiencing some inflammation after taking a couple days off from throwing. Luzardo will be eligible to be reinstated for the final game of the regular season Sept. 27 versus Tampa Bay, but it's not clear if he's actually expected to be available at that point. If he's unable to retake the mound before the playoffs, he will close out the regular season with a 14-5 record, 2.87 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 221:52 K:BB over 178.2 innings. According to Lauber, Luzardo said he is "guaranteed" to be ready to pitch in the postseason, though it's possible he won't be ready to work out of the rotation.
