Player Outlook
At age 25 last season, Jesus Luzardo established himself as a legitimate frontline starter for Miami, and he may not be done ascending. He went into the All-Star break riding high, having allowed just two runs in 25.2 innings with a 35:5 K:BB in his final four starts of the first half. There was talk about what the Marlins might do to manage Luzardo's workload after injuries previously limited him to just over 100 innings in a big-league season. In the end the team didn't do anything to limit Luzardo and he soared past 180 innings when including his four-inning outing in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series. It's the type of jump in innings that we're not used to seeing, and the results suffered down the stretch as the innings added up, though it's debatable whether the workload increase itself is a reason to be cautious with Luzardo entering 2024. He could be in the running to start Opening Day with Sandy Alcantara out after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Focused on efficiency

Luzardo is focused on pitching deeper into games this season, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. With Sandy Alcantara out for all of 2024 while he recovers from Tommy John surgery, Luzardo is stepping into the role of staff ace for the Marlins, and he's taking the job seriously. "First-pitch strikes are No. 1 probably on his list, and then early outs," manager Skip Schumaker said Tuesday. "We want him to eat up innings. He wants to eat up innings and he wants to be the ace of the staff... He wants to show that he can go deep in games and help out the bullpen and be that guy." Luzardo lasted at least seven innings in only five of his 32 starts last season, although he did produce 17 quality starts, so better pitch efficiency would put less pressure on the Miami bullpen. The 26-year-old southpaw struggled to put away hitters in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros, allowing three runs on five hits over 3.1 innings and 67 pitches (45 strikes), but he struck out four without walking a batter and now sports a 12:1 K:BB through 12 spring frames.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Can't keep ball in park Wednesday

Luzardo gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits over 3.2 innings in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals. He struck out three without walking a batter. The line doesn't look pretty, but the wind at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium may have played a factor -- three of the hits Luzardo allowed left the yard, including homers by the light-hitting Luis Garcia and Victor Robles. Luzardo built up to 57 pitches (38 strikes), and through his first 8.2 spring innings he's posted a sharp 8:1 K:BB, a strong sign he's just about ready for Opening Day.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Sharp again Friday

Luzardo gave up two hits and a walk over three scoreless innings in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He struck out two. Matched up against Aaron Nola and facing a lineup that featured most of Philly's Opening Day starters, Luzardo fired 28 of 45 pitches for strikes and delivered his second straight clean outing to begin the spring. The 26-year-old southpaw is set as the Marlins' Opening Day starter as he looks to build on a breakout 2023 season that saw him set career highs in innings (178.2), wins (10) and strikeouts (208).

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Tapped to start Opening Day

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said Tuesday that Luzardo will be the club's Opening Day starter March 28 versus the Pirates, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. With Sandy Alcantara (elbow) slated to miss the entirety of the 2024 campaign, Luzardo was the obvious choice to take the ball Opening Day. The left-hander collected a 3.58 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 208:55 K:BB across 178.2 innings covering 32 starts in 2023. He should remain a fantasy standout for the Marlins in 2024.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Perfect start to spring

Luzardo struck out three batters over two perfect innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals. The 26-year-old southpaw got his spring off to a flying start, tossing 17 of 23 pitches for strikes against a patchwork Washington lineup headlined by Joey Meneses and top prospect James Wood. Luzardo threw a career-high 178.2 innings last year, striking out 208 batters with a 3.58 ERA and 1.21 WHIP, and he heads into the 2024 campaign looking to establish himself as a reliable frontline starter.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Avoids arbitration at $5.5 million

The Marlins and Luzardo avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.5 million contract Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Luzardo is in his second year of arbitration eligibility and will receive a much-deserved raise. The left-hander posted a 3.58 ERA in 32 starts for Miami in 2023, finishing with a 208:55 K:BB over 178.2 innings. Luzardo has been mentioned as a possible trade chip, but it would take a haul to pry him away from the Marlins.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Cedes three runs in loss

Luzardo allowed three runs on eight hits across four innings, taking the loss in Tuesday's 4-1 defeat to the Phillies in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series. He struck out five. Luzardo was knocked around by the Phillies lineup early and often, giving up a hit to every batter besides Bryce Harper at some point in his four innings of work. The pressure of the Phillies' home crowd may have gotten to him some considering he uncorked a pair of wild pitches, one which set up an RBI single by Christian Pache in the fifth inning. After Tuesday's outing, Luzardo is up to a 6.75 ERA and 1.64 WHIP with 16 strikeouts across 14.2 career postseason innings.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Tabbed as Game 1 starter

Luzardo will start Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Phillies on Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The Phillies' playoff rotation has yet to be announced. Luzardo had a 2.91 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 34 innings over his final six starts of the season.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Fades late in no-decision

Luzardo came away with a no-decision Saturday, giving up three runs on three hits and three walks over five-plus innings in Miami's 5-4 victory over Milwaukee. He struck out four. The southpaw blanked the Brewers for five innings before the wheels began to come off in the sixth, but he still exited the game with the Marlins ahead 4-1 before A.J. Puk served up a Carlos Santana homer that cashed in two baserunners Luzardo had left behind. It's just the second time in his last six outings he's been charged with more than two runs, a stretch in which Luzardo sports a 2.91 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 38:13 K:BB through 34 innings. The Marlins remain alive in the NL wild-card race, sitting one game back of the Cubs for the final spot heading into Sunday's action, so the club could need its best remaining starter to come up big in his final start of the regular season, likely to come on the road next week against the Mets.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Dominates in 10th win

Luzardo (10-9) allowed four hits and two walks over six shutout frames Sunday, striking out eight and earning a win against Atlanta. Luzardo worked around a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning but didn't face much of a threat otherwise. He's turned in three scoreless performances over his last five starts, posting a 2.48 ERA during that span and lowering his season ERA to 3.68. However, he's allowed at least four runs in four of his eight outings since the start of August. Luzardo's next start is currently projected to be at home against the Brewers.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Hit hard by Brewers

Luzardo (9-9) allowed six runs on 10 hits and four walks over five innings Monday, striking out five and talking a loss against Milwaukee. Luzardo coughed up a solo homer to Mark Canha to begin the game but it was Milwaukee's four-run third inning that really buried the Marlins. Luzardo had allowed just two runs over his previous three starts but he's now given up at least six runs in three of his last six appearances. His season ERA jumped to 3.82 with a 186:49 K:BB through 160.1 frames. Luzardo is currently lined up to face Atlanta at home this weekend.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Sharp against Dodgers

Luzardo did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings against the Dodgers. He struck out six. Luzardo's now logged three straight quality starts, allowing just two runs in that span (18 innings) after struggling to an 11.68 ERA in his previous three outings. Overall, his ERA is down to 3.59 on the season with a 1.20 WHIP and 181:45 K:BB across 28 starts (155.1 innings). The 25-year-old Luzardo will look to keep rolling in his next start, currently lined up for early next week in Milwaukee.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Strong in ninth win

Luzardo (9-8) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out seven over six shutout innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Padres. Luzardo was locked in, a significant departure from his last four starts in which he allowed a combined 21 runs (20 earned) over just 17 innings. This was his fifth scoreless outing of the campaign and his first since July 4. He's now at a 3.96 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 167:42 K:BB through 143.1 innings over 26 starts on the year. Luzardo is lined up for a home start versus the Nationals this weekend if the Marlins opt to get by with a four-man rotation in the near term, which is possible with off days Thursday and Monday.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Stumbles again vs. Houston

Luzardo (8-8) took the loss Wednesday, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and three walks over 3.2 innings against Houston. He struck out three. The Astros jumped on Luzardo early Wednesday, tallying five runs on three homers in the first inning. The 25-year-old left-hander appears to have hit a wall of late -- he's struggled to a 10.59 ERA over his last four starts (17 innings). Overall, Luzardo's ERA is up to 4.13 with a 1.29 WHIP and 160:41 K:BB across 25 starts (137.1 innings) this season. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, currently scheduled for next week in San Diego.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Roughed up by Yankees

Luzardo (8-7) took the loss versus the Yankees on Friday, yielding seven runs on nine hits and a walk over 3.1 innings. He struck out two. It's the shortest outing of the season for Luzardo, and it's also the most hits he's permitted this year. He served up a pair of home runs and now has surrendered five long balls across his last two outings. Luzardo fanned 13 in a gem against the Rockies last month but has turned in three clunkers since then. It's possible he's tiring, having already reached his career high in innings with 131.2.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Fans eight in loss

Luzardo (8-6) took the loss Friday as the Marlins were downed 6-2 by the Rangers, giving up four runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out eight. The three homers allowed were a season high for Luzardo, who hadn't served up multiple long balls in a start since May 21, but he still generated 18 swinging strikes among his 90 pitches before exiting. The southpaw has stumbled a bit in his last two outings, but his ability to miss bats gives him a solid fantasy floor even when he isn't at his sharpest -- he's fanned at least eight batters in six of his last eight starts, posting a 2.51 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 61:15 K:BB through 46.2 innings over that stretch. He'll look to get back in the win column in his next trip to the mound, which is likely to come next week in Cincinnati.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Struggles against Detroit

Luzardo did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks over 4.2 innings against the Tigers. He struck out three. After fanning a career-high 13 batters in his last start, Luzardo was only able to punch out three hitters Sunday during 4.2 inefficient innings. All of the damage against Luzardo came in the third, where he allowed four hits and a walk as part of a four-run frame. The start ended an impressive run for the 25-year-old, who had allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven consecutive starts leading up to Sunday's dud. Luzardo is tentatively scheduled to take the mound next during a three-game road series against the Rangers this weekend.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Dominant in no-decision

Luzardo did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over seven innings against Colorado. He struck out 13. Though Luzardo didn't get enough run support to pick up a victory, he was incredible in the no-decision and set a career-high in K's with 13. The outing also marked his sixth quality start in his last seven appearances, a stretch in which he owns a 1.48 ERA and a 55:11 K:BB through 42.2 innings. Luzardo will have another chance to build on his already impressive 2023 resume in his next start, which is projected to come against the Tigers, who average the third-fewest runs scored per game in MLB.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Returns to Earth against Cardinals

Luzardo allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out two batters over four-plus innings in a no-decision against St. Louis on Monday. Luzardo had been on an impressive roll coming into the contest, notching five straight quality starts during which he posted a 1.14 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 40:6 K:BB over 31.2 innings. That magic came to least a temporary end Monday, as the left-hander tied a season-low by completing just four frames while posting more walks (three) than strikeouts (two). Luzardo had issued two or fewer free passes in 12 straight outings heading into the matchup, but his lack of control was a major factor in his undoing, as he threw just 52 of 92 pitches for a strike. Given his recent dominance, there's still plenty to be excited about for fantasy managers who roster Luzardo, and he'll look to bounce back in his second start of the week, which is tentatively lined up to come at home versus Colorado this weekend.

  • Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Fans nine in eighth win

Luzardo (8-5) earned the win against the Phillies on Sunday after he allowed two runs on four hits and one walk over 6.1 innings. He struck out nine. The left-hander blanked Philly until the fifth inning, when Edmundo Sosa launched a two-run home run. Luzardo otherwise pitched well and combined for 29 called and swinging strikes as he struck out at least eight batters for the fourth straight start. The 25-year-old posted a 3.32 ERA in 18 starts last year and nearly replicated those figures during the first half of this season with a 3.29 ERA through 19 outings.
