Luzardo gave up four hits and a walk over four scoreless innings while striking out five Wednesday in Venezuela's 5-1 win over Israel in the WBC. The southpaw overmatched an Israel lineup that featured just three players with any big-league experience, tossing 35 of 50 pitches for strikes before exiting. Luzardo was looking good in Grapefruit League play before the tournament started as well, posting a 10:1 K:BB through 8.2 innings, and after putting together a 3.32 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 30.0 percent strikeout rate through 100.1 innings for the Marlins in 2022. His ability to stay healthy might be the only thing standing between the 25-year-old and a breakout campaign.... See More ... See Less

Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Strikes out three Saturday
Luzardo gave up three runs on four hits over 2.2 innings while striking out three in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets. A three-run homer by minor-league veteran Lorenzo Cedrola in the second inning marred his outing, but Luzardo was otherwise sharp, and his strikeout victims included Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso. The 25-year-old southpaw has a 4:0 K:BB through his first 4.2 innings this spring, and if Luzardo can stay healthy in 2023 he could be poised for a breakout campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Wins arbitration case
Luzardo won his arbitration case with the Marlins on Friday, setting his salary for 2023 at $2.45 million, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Luzardo finished the 2022 campaign red hot and concluded the season with a 3.32 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 120 punchouts in 100.1 innings over 18 starts. if he can stay healthy, the left-hander could be set for a breakout year in 2023 operating as Miami's No. 2 rotation option behind Sandy Alcantara.... Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Ends season in dazzling fashion
Luzardo (4-7) picked up the win in Monday's 4-0 victory over Atlanta, scattering four hits and a walk over six scoreless innings while striking out 12. The southpaw kept Atlanta from clinching another NL East title with one of his best performances of the year. Luzardo tied his career high in strikeouts -- generating a massive 20 swinging strikes among his 101 pitches -- while delivering his fourth straight quality start and his 11th in 18 outings. The 25-year-old ends a breakout campaign with a 3.32 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 120:35 K:BB through 100.1 innings, and the next step for Luzardo if he wants to become a true ace in 2023 is finding a way to stay off the IL.... Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Another quality start
Luzardo did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings against the Mets. He struck out six. Luzardo was pitching a shutout until he allowed a two-run homer to third baseman Eduardo Escobar with no outs in the seventh inning. The lefty has pitched at least six innings in seven of his last eight starts while allowing two runs or fewer six times during that same stretch. The 24-year-old is significantly better away from Miami, recording a 2.64 ERA and 0.90 WHIP over 58 innings compared to a 4.95 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 36.1 innings at home.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Dominates Cubs in no-decision
Luzardo tossed 6.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk while striking out 11 in Wednesday's loss to the Cubs. He did not factor into the decision. Luzardo was in full command for the first six innings, holding the Cubs scoreless while striking out 10. After getting two outs in the top of the seventh, including a strikeout, Patrick Wisdom took the left-hander deep for a solo shot, ending his day at 6.2 innings. The bullpen later blew the 3-1 lead Luzardo left with, but the outing was his sixth quality start in his last seven outings. The 24-year-old has produced a 3.40 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with 44 strikeouts over 42.1 innings during that stretch.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Deals quality start Friday
Luzardo didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Nationals, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk over six-plus innings. He struck out six. The southpaw tossed only 58 of 97 pitches for strikes but mostly stayed out of danger as he carried a shutout into the seventh inning. The wheels fell off at that point though, as Joey Meneses led off the frame with an inside-the-park home run that kick-started a Nats rally and helped chase Luzardo from the game. The quality start was his sixth in his last eight outings, a stretch in which Luzardo has a 3.59 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 45:15 K:BB through 47.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Pulled after 3.1 innings Sunday
Luzardo (3-7) took the loss Sunday against the Mets, allowing five runs on six hits, three walks and two hit batsmen while striking out three in 3.1 innings. Luzardo struggled from start to finish and allowed at least two baserunners in each of the four innings in which he appeared. Eleven of the 21 batters he faced reached safely, and the leadoff man reached in three of the four frames. He entered Sunday having not plunked a single batter in any of his 13 outings but hit two of the first 12 hitters to come to the plate. His next start will likely be next weekend in Washington.... Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Fans nine in no-decision
Luzardo didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Phillies, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out nine. The southpaw was impressive, generating 19 swinging strikes among his 92 pitches, but he left the game on the hook for his seventh loss until the Marlins tied it up in the eighth inning. Luzardo has reeled off four straight quality starts and five in his last six outings, compiling a 2.82 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 36:11 K:BB through 38.1 innings over the latter stretch.... See More ... Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Ekes out quality start
Luzardo (3-6) took the loss Tuesday as the Marlins fell 7-2 to the Rays, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four. The southpaw's own defensive miscue in the fifth inning allowed him to escape with his third straight quality start, but this might have been Luzardo's shakiest performance since he returned to the rotation at the beginning of August. Despite Tuesday's stumble, he still wraps up the month with a 2.97 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 32:9 K:BB through 36.1 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Possible waiver wire pickups
The most impressive thing about Luzardo's start Friday is it came against the Dodgers, a team that's not only a distant first in runs scored but is also on pace for the most wins we've seen in a couple decades. He held them to one run in 6 1/3 innings for his third strong start in four turns since coming back from a strained forearm. He hasn't retained the velocity bump he enjoyed just before the injury, but he has gone the more sustainable route of throwing his best pitches more -- specifically, the changeup, which has a 50 percent whiff rate. He threw it 39 percent of the time Friday, giving him three straight with 30 percent or more. He was throwing it only about 20 percent of the time previously.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Settles for no-decision against A's
Luzardo didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the A's, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out four. While he wasn't at his most dominant, Luzardo did take a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Jonah Bride broke it up with a leadoff single. The southpaw tossed 66 of 102 pitches for strikes as he delivered his second straight quality start and fifth in 11 trips to the mound this season. Luzardo will take a 3.34 ERA and 69:23 K:BB through 59.1 innings into his next outing.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Sleeper pitchers for Week 21 (Aug. 22-28)
Luzardo has been hit or miss since returning from a forearm strain, but he's coming off a great start at the Dodgers and shouldn't have too much trouble in a revenge game against what's basically a Triple-A lineup for the Athletics.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Strikes out seven in no-decision
Luzardo allowed a run on four hits and two walks while striking out seven over 6.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Friday. Two of Luzardo's four starts in August have been quality ones, with Friday's effort arguably one of his best all year given the opponent. He was charged with one run in the seventh inning, surrendered by Steven Okert after Luzardo left the contest with one on and one out. The 24-year-old southpaw has pitched to a 3.44 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 65:21 K:BB through 52.1 innings across 10 starts this year.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Takes fifth loss
Luzardo (3-5) allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six across five innings to take the loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Atlanta. Luzardo worked three scoreless innings but allowed five batters to reach base in the fourth frame -- resulting in three earned runs. He also served up a solo home run to Matt Olson, the only long ball he's surrendered across 17 innings since returning from the injured list on Aug 1. Despite the relatively poor outing Saturday, Luzardo has maintained a 3.18 ERA and 17:3 K:BB in that span.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Possible waiver wire pickups
Each of Luzardo's two starts back from a strained forearm has gone well enough, but his most recent Sunday at the Cubs, in which he allowed one hit with six strikeouts in seven innings, was particularly noteworthy. Granted, his average fastball velocity has been down more than a mile per hour since returning, but it's basically back to 2021 levels after a big jump earlier this year. It was also only his fourth most-thrown pitch Sunday. He's leaned more on his offspeed stuff since returning, primarily his curveball in this one after primarily his changeup last time out. Both have much better metrics than his fastball, so tweaking his arsenal in this way may be a bigger key to his success than pure velocity.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Masterful in win
Luzardo (3-4) earned the victory Sunday against the Cubs, striking out six in seven shutout innings while allowing a hit and a walk. Luzardo was magnificent and efficient Sunday and got through seven scoreless frames on 91 pitches. At one point he retired 12 straight batters. It was the first time in his big-league career that he pitched seven innings in a start without allowing a run. In his two starts since returning from a forearm injury, he's allowed a total of two runs on four hits while fanning 11 in 12 innings. His next start will likely be next weekend against Atlanta.... Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Pitches well but loses in return
Luzardo (2-4) took the loss against Cincinnati on Monday, allowing two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out five batters over five innings. Luzardo made his first major-league appearance since May 10 and was able to stick around for 81 pitches, 49 of which were strikes. He gave up a pair of runs in the second inning but held the Reds scoreless in each of his other four frames; however, he received little support from his offense and was tagged with the loss. It was nonetheless a positive return for Luzardo, who had previously been on the 60-day IL with a forearm strain. He should be a fixture in the Marlins rotation for the rest of the season barring any further injury issues.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Starting for Miami on Monday
The Marlins will activate Luzardo (forearm) from the 60-day injured list to have him start Monday's game against the Reds, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Luzardo missed just shy of three months with his forearm injury, but he completed a rehab assignment and is ready to rejoin Miami's rotation. He threw 75 pitches in his final rehab start, so his pitch count will likely be limited to some degree in his first outing back with the big club.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Reaches fifth inning in rehab start
Luzardo (forearm) struck out six and allowed two earned runs on three hits and four walks Wednesday in his rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville. While making the third start of his rehab assignment and his second in a row at Jacksonville, He tossed 75 pitches (45 strikes) and faced 22 batters. That sort of workload suggests Luzardo is stretched out enough to make his next start in the big leagues, assuming the Marlins are comfortable with how the southpaw checked out physically following Wednesday's outing. Luzardo turned in a 4.03 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 41:16 K:BB over 29 innings in his first six starts of the season with the Marlins before he landed on the injured list in mid-May with a left forearm strain....
