Padres' Randy Vasquez: Excellent in win
Vasquez (7-6) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out one over six scoreless innings to earn the win over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
Vasquez has allowed just three runs over 17 innings across five games since he returned from an ankle bruise. The right-hander appears to have at least temporarily won a spot in the Padres' rotation -- JP Sears was optioned Tuesday, while Griffin Canning and German Marquez both made relief appearances in this contest. The Padres revitalized their rotation by acquiring Casey Mize and Robbie Ray ahead of the trade deadline, but Vasquez should start until Nick Pivetta (forearm) and Joe Musgrove (elbow) complete their rehab assignments. Vasquez is tentatively projected to make his next start at home versus the Astros if he remains in the rotation.

Padres' Randy Vasquez: Drawing start Tuesday
Vasquez will start Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Vasquez will make his second start and fourth appearance since returning from the 15-day injured list July 19. In his most recent appearance Friday versus the Giants, the 27-year-old tossed 4.2 scoreless innings and 65 pitches, so he'll be relatively stretched out for his upcoming start and should be able to work deep enough into the game to qualify for a win. For the season, the right-hander owns a 6-6 record, 4.45 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 64:30 K:BB in 95 innings.

Padres' Randy Vasquez: Works in long relief Thursday
Vasquez covered 4.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Giants, striking out a batter while allowing three hits and one walk.
Vasquez got the start in his previous appearance but worked in tandem with JP Sears, pitching the first 2.2 innings before the lefty came on to cover the next 3.1 frames. The two essentially swapped roles Thursday, with Sears starting and yielding three earned runs over 3.2 innings before Vasquez entered in the top of the fifth to mop up. Sears and Vasquez may end up piggybacking again the next time through the rotation Tuesday in Arizona, though the makeup of the San Diego pitching staff could change by Monday's trade deadline.

Padres' Randy Vasquez: Starting Saturday
Vasquez will start Saturday's game against the Marlins.
Vasquez will be making his first start since returning from the injured list last weekend, but because he hasn't pitched more than three innings in a game since the beginning of July, he's likely to act as more of an opener for JP Sears, who was originally in line to start Saturday's contest. Vasquez has been struggling mightily on the mound as of late, giving up 16 earned runs in just 13.1 frames across his last five appearances.

Padres' Randy Vasquez: Works in bulk relief Sunday
Vasquez was credited with a hold while striking out two and allowing three hits and no walks over three scoreless innings of relief in Sunday's 19-2 win over the Royals.
After the Padres reinstated Vasquez from the 15-day injured list prior to Sunday's contest, the right-hander headed to the bullpen for the series finale in Kansas City in what marked just his second relief appearance in 18 outings on the season. The Padres essentially deployed Vasquez in tandem with starter German Marquez, who was lifted after tossing 59 pitches and allowing two earned runs over three innings. Beyond Michael King, the Padres have been unable to generate quality results from any of their rotation members this season, so it wouldn't be surprising if Vasquez's move to the bullpen ends up being short-lived. Even if he doesn't displace Marquez in the rotation the next time a fifth starter is needed Friday in Miami, Vasquez could still end up being used in a tandem arrangement with Marquez once again.

Padres' Randy Vasquez: Reinstated from injured list
San Diego reinstated Vasquez (ankle) from the 15-day injured list Sunday.
Vasquez is back with San Diego after spending just over the minimum time on the shelf due to a bruised right ankle. The right-hander had started in 16 of his 17 appearances prior to landing the shelf while submitting a 4.71 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 60:27 K:BB across 84 innings, but he's expected to work out of the bullpen initially following his reinstatement, per Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune. German Marquez will start Sunday's series finale in Kansas City, and San Diego has already named JP Sears, Walker Buehler, Michael King and Griffin Canning as its probable starters for its upcoming four-game series in Atlanta.

Padres' Randy Vasquez: Placed on injured list
The Padres placed Vasquez on the 15-day injured list Friday with a bruised right ankle, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
After taking a comebacker off his ankle Thursday, Vasquez fainted while on his way to get X-rays, leading to his hospitalization. He was discharged from the hospital Friday, and tests on his ankle came back negative, but the Padres will keep him sidelined for the remainder of the first half. Alek Jacob will come up from Triple-A El Paso to give the Padres extra bullpen depth while they sort out their rotation plans.

Padres' Randy Vasquez: Discharged from hospital
Padres manager Craig Stammen said Friday that Vasquez (ankle/illness) has been discharged from the hospital after testing came back "all clear," MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM reports.
Vasquez took a comebacker off the ankle during Thursday's start against the Dodgers. While on his way to get X-rays, he fainted and was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Scans of the right-hander's ankle came back negative, and it seems whatever caused the fainting spell is not a long-term concern. Vasquez is tentatively lined up for two starts during the final week of the first half, but the Padres will monitor him in the coming days before determining whether he'll make his next start as scheduled Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.

Padres' Randy Vasquez: Hurts ankle, later faints
Vasquez fainted while being taken in for an evaluation on his ankle following his start versus the Dodgers on Thursday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Vazquez finished with a no-decision in the contest after allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk over three innings. He was struck on the ankle by a Mookie Betts comebacker in the first inning but remained in the contest for two more frames; however, he was later on his way to get an X-ray before fainting. According to Cassavell, the veteran hurler was taken to the emergency room as a precaution, though he is reportedly stable and conscious. Vasquez will presumably get tests done to try to determine what caused the fainting episode in addition to having imaging on the injured ankle. It's too early at this point to know if either issue will cause him to miss any time.

Padres' Randy Vasquez: Takes sixth loss
Vasquez (6-6) allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out one over 3.1 innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Dodgers.
Kyle Hart allowed one run over two innings as the opener. For a while, the plan to have Vasquez work in bulk relief was on track, but the Dodgers' bats came alive in the sixth inning, highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Kyle Tucker and Dalton Rushing to spark the rally. Vasquez has had a poor June, allowing 22 runs (19 earned) over 20.2 innings across five appearances. He's now at a 4.56 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 60:26 K:BB through 81 innings over 16 outings (15 starts) this season. He's projected to make his next appearance in a rematch with the Dodgers in Los Angeles, so it may be best to avoid Vasquez for that outing.

Padres' Randy Vasquez: Tagged early in loss
Vasquez (6-5) took the loss against the Rangers on Friday, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks with one strikeout over 3.1 innings.
Vasquez was spotted a five-run lead in the top of the first inning but allowed six runs of his own in the bottom half of the frame. It marked the shortest outing of the season for the 27-year-old, and he's now yielded four earned runs or more in three of his past five outings. He owns a 4.17 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 59:25 K:BB across 77.2 innings this season and faces a tough home test against Atlanta next week.

Padres' Randy Vasquez: Plenty of support in sixth win
Vasquez (6-4) picked up the win Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings in a 9-3 victory over the Orioles. He struck out five.
The right-hander tossed an inefficient 100 pitches (68 strikes) before being replaced to begin the sixth inning, but a four-run first for the Padres gave Vasquez a comfortable cushion before he even got to the mound. The win was Vasquez's first since May 15, and that was also the last time he completed six innings -- over his last five outings, he's stumbled to a 5.63 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 13:9 K:BB in 24 frames. He'll look to build on this performance in his next start, which is set to come on the road next weekend against the Rangers.

Padres' Randy Vasquez: Ineffective in fourth loss
Vasquez (5-4) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks over four-plus innings in a 7-3 loss to the Mets. He struck out three.
Vasquez struggled to find a rhythm, surrendering a run in each of the first two innings before allowing another run in the fifth. The right-hander exited with the bases loaded and nobody out in that frame, handing a difficult situation to Yuki Matsui, who allowed one of the inherited runners to score. After getting off to a blazing start with a 1.88 ERA through his first five starts, Vasquez now owns a 3.63 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 53:20 K:BB across 13 starts (69.1 innings). He'll look to get back in the win column in his next outing, tentatively scheduled for Saturday against the Orioles.

Padres' Randy Vasquez: Settles for no-decision Tuesday
Vasquez didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Phillies, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out three.
A two-run homer by Bryce Harper in the fourth inning accounted for all the damage off Vasquez, but the right-hander left the mound after 80 pitches (46 strikes) with the score tied 2-2. Vasquez has been taken deep five times in his last three outings and eight times in his last seven, producing a 4.42 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 20:10 K:BB in 36.2 innings over that stretch. He'll try to keep the ball in the park in his next start, which lines up to come at home this weekend against the Mets.

Vasquez (5-3) allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out two over 5.2 innings to take the loss versus the Phillies on Tuesday.
Vasquez gave up three solo home runs in this outing over the first three innings, and that was too much for the Padres to recover from. He's given up at least one long ball in just five of his 11 starts, and he's yielded seven homers across his last six outings. The right-hander still has a 3.28 ERA despite a pedestrian 1.23 WHIP and 47:17 K:BB through 60.1 innings this season. Vasquez is projected to make his next start in a rematch in Philadelphia.
