Player Outlook
Aaron Civale was traded from Cleveland to Tampa Bay for first base prospect Kyle Manzardo straight up at the deadline. His strikeout rate jumped from 19 percent to 29.3 percent and his walk rate dropped from 7.2 percent to 5.6 percent after the trade. Don't downgrade him because of his 5.36 ERA in 10 starts with the Rays. He had a 3.26 xFIP over that unlucky stretch and his 23.7 K-BB% in 45.1 innings after the trade was an elite mark. In fact it was similar to his new teammate Zach Eflin's 23.0 K-BB% on the season, and Civale happens to have almost an identical repertoire to Eflin. Perhaps that's why the Rays targeted him. Civale missed almost two months early in the season with an oblique strain and still tallied 133.1 innings, including his rehab assignment. He shouldn't have any notable workload restrictions in 2024.

  • Brewers' Aaron Civale: Roughed up in no-decision

Civale did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing five runs on four hits and four walks over 4.1 innings against the Twins. He struck out four. Civale allowed homers to Byron Buxton and Trevor Larnach, with Larnach's two-run blast in the fifth representing the biggest blow. The five runs allowed represented the most Civale has given up since the beginning of May. It was also the second time he's allowed multiple homers over his first three starts in Milwaukee, matching his previous total through the first 17 outings when he was still a member of the Rays. Civale has compiled 15.2 innings since joining the Brewers, carrying a 5.74 ERA and 1.53 WHIP. He is slated for a much softer matchup in his next start, tentatively slated to take place at home against the Marlins.

  • Brewers' Aaron Civale: Outdueled in loss

Civale (2-7) took the loss Thursday against Pittsburgh, allowing one run on six hits and two walks across 6.1 innings. He struck out six. Civale blanked the Pirates until the seventh inning when he allowed a single, an RBI double and a walk before being pulled with one out. His one run allowed proved to be the difference, as the Brewers only managed two hits on the day, both of which came in the eighth inning. Though it goes down as a loss, Thursday's outing marked Civale's first time pitching into the seventh inning and was his first quality start since April 16. In two starts with the Brewers, Civale has surrendered five runs over 11.1 innings and owns a 14:5 K:BB.

  • Brewers' Aaron Civale: No-decision in Milwaukee debut

Civale allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight over five innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Friday. Civale received a tough assignment in his first start as a Brewer, and he didn't do particularly well. Will Smith tagged him for two solo shots and Miguel Vargas added a two-run home run, though Civale exited the game in line for the win before the Brewers' bullpen blew the lead. The three homers allowed are a season high for the right-hander, and that could be a problem that crops up more since Milwaukee's American Family Field is more prone to homers than his old home park, Tropicana Field. Civale is at a 5.18 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 92:30 K:BB through 92 innings over 18 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Pirates.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Takes sixth loss Saturday

Civale (2-6) was tagged with the loss against Washington on Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks while striking out two batters over 5.2 innings. Civale threw only 58 of 102 pitches for strikes and handed out four free passes, but he managed to mostly weave out of trouble and finished one out shy of a quality start. Nonetheless, he ended up in the loss column since the Rays' offense gave him only one run of support. Civale has gone 14 straight outings without a victory, and he hasn't pitched well overall with a 5.79 ERA over that span. The right-hander has been better of late, however, giving up two or fewer earned runs while hurling at least five frames in five of his past seven starts.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Chased in fourth inning

Civale didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against Minnesota, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks across 3.2 innings. He struck out five. While Civale kept the Twins scoreless through three innings, he unraveled in the fourth. The 29-year-old surrendered a single, a walk and a pair of doubles to consecutive batters, all with two outs, before being replaced by Kevin Kelly. Tuesday's start marked Civale's first time failing to complete four innings this season, and he hasn't added a tally to the win column since April 9. In 76.1 innings of work, Civale owns a 5.42 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP with 79 strikeouts. He's tentatively scheduled for a road start against the Pirates to end his two-start week.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Rocked by O's

Civale (2-5) took the loss Friday, giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings as the Rays fell 6-3 to the Orioles. He struck out eight. The right-hander got taken deep by Anthony Santander in the second inning and Ryan Mountcastle in the fifth, just the second time this season Civale has served up multiple homers. The eight strikeouts did tie his season high, helping to salvage some fantasy value, but he's gone 10 straight starts without recording a win, going 0-4 over that stretch with a 6.66 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 50:15 K:BB through 50 innings. Civale will try to get back in the win column in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Cubs.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Better vs. Orioles

Civale didn't factor into the decision Friday against Baltimore, allowing one run on six hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out three. Civale was sharp Friday, blanking the Orioles for five innings before he was ultimately charged with a lone run in the sixth. The 28-year-old Civale has been pitching better of late, allowing just three runs over 10.1 innings in his last two starts after struggling to an 8.48 ERA over his previous six outings. Overall, he's 2-4 on the year with a 5.37 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 60:18 K:BB across 62 innings. Civale's currently lined up for a rematch with Baltimore at home in his next start.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Takes another loss

Civale (2-4) took the loss Sunday against the Blue Jays, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out three. Civale allowed five or more runs for the fourth time this season and yielded a solo home run to Daniel Vogelbach in the second inning. During his last six starts, Civale is 0-3 with an 8.48 ERA and a 26:12 K:BB across 32.2 innings. He's tentatively scheduled for a start during a three-game home series against the Royals next weekend.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Bailed out by offense

Civale escaped with a no-decision Friday in Tampa Bay's 10-8 win over the Mets, coughing up seven runs on six hits and a walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out five. New York tagged him for three runs in the second inning and four more in the fifth, but Civale still left the mound with the Rays ahead 9-7. The right-hander tossed 52 of 77 pitches for strikes as he allowed five or more runs for the third straight outing. The rough patch has sent his ratios soaring, and Civale will carry a 6.14 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 39:10 K:BB through 36.2 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next week against the White Sox.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Surrenders six runs Saturday

Civale allowed six runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out three batters over 4.1 innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Saturday. Civale made it through three scoreless frames before serving up an Andrew Benintendi three-run homer in the fourth. The right-hander returned for the fifth frame but gave up three straight hits for another run before departing with one out, and both runners he left on base later came around to score. Civale began the campaign with three quality starts among his first four appearances, but he's fallen off since then, yielding 11 runs across nine innings over his subsequent two starts. He'll try to get back on track in his next start, which is tentatively lined up to be a home outing against the Mets next week.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Fans eight in quality start

Civale came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-innings win over the Angels, giving up three runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out eight without walking a batter. The right-hander tossed 65 of 101 pitches for strikes and generated 31 called or swinging strikes, but homers by Mickey Moniak and Logan O'Hoppe in the fourth inning had Civale in line for his second loss of the year until the Rays rallied in the ninth inning, eventually winning in the 13th. Civale has delivered three quality starts in his first four trips to the mound this season, and he'll carry a 2.74 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 26:4 K:BB through 23 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road this weekend against the Yankees.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Hard-luck loss vs. Rangers

Civale (1-1) took the loss Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over six innings against the Rangers. He struck out eight. Civale was excellent Wednesday, allowing just a solo home run to Corey Seager in the sixth inning. However, the Rays couldn't get anything going against Nathan Eovaldi on the other side, sticking Civale with his first loss. The 28-year-old right-hander's allowed just two runs in 12 innings through his first two starts, while showing more of a strikeout punch than he has in the past. Civale made 23 starts last year between Tampa Bay and Cleveland, going 7-5 with a 3.46 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 116:33 K:BB. He looks like a dependable fantasy option.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Lined up for Friday

Civale (illness) is scheduled to start Friday's series opener versus the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Civale needed a couple extra days of rest between starts after coming down with an illness earlier this week, but he's good to go heading into the Rays' final series of the regular season. The 28-year-old has registered a 5.36 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 55:9 K:BB in 43.2 innings (nine starts) for the Rays since being acquired from the Guardians on July 31.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Lasts just three frames in loss

Civale (7-4) took the loss against the Angels on Wednesday, allowing six runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out seven batters over three innings. Civale fell behind 2-0 in the first inning and gave up four more runs in the second. Though he bounced back to strike out three batters in a scoreless third, the right-hander wasn't allowed to return for the fourth. This was Civale's shortest outing of the campaign and snapped his streak of seven straight starts of at least five frames. One positive takeaway is that Civale continued his recent strikeout binge -- he's compiled 44 punchouts over his past 28.1 frames covering six starts.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Eight punchouts in no-decision

Civale did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk over five innings against the Orioles. He struck out eight. After surrendering solo home runs in the second and fourth frames, Civale escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fifth, limiting the damage to just one run in the inning. The 28-year-old hasn't thrown more than 5.1 innings in any of his last five starts and despite an impressive 13.1 K/9, posting a 5.33 ERA across 25.1 innings during that stretch that has caused his season-long ERA to rise above 3.00 for the first time since early July. He will likely take the mound next in an upcoming home matchup with the Angels.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Four runs in no-decision

Civale did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks over five innings against the Mariners. He struck out three. The right-hander struggled right out of the gate Saturday, loading the bases before recording any outs and surrendering three runs in the first frame followed by a solo shot fromJulio Rodriguez in the second. Civale then settled in, holding Seattle scoreless over his final three innings of work, and he avoided taking the loss thanks to Tampa Bay's late rally. The 28-year-old hadn't allowed more than three runs in any of his 12 starts since June 25, accumulating a 5-1 record with a 2.51 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and a solid 62:12 K:BB across 68 innings during that stretch. Civale currently lines up for a tough road matchup against the Orioles next week.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Fans 12 in no-decision

Civale allowed three runs on two hits and three walks over 5.1 innings in Monday's loss to Boston. He struck out 12 and did not factor in the decision. Civale gave up just one run through five frames but was charged with two more after Chris Devenski allowed a three-run shot to Triston Casas in the sixth inning. Civale's 12-strikeout performance set a new career high and marked his first double-digit strikeout performance since last season. He's allowed three or fewer runs in each of his first six appearances with the Rays, posting a 3.82 ERA and a 37:5 K:BB during that stretch. Civale is currently in line for a home matchup with the Mariners this weekend.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Solid outing in win

Civale (7-3) earned the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on seven hits over five innings against Miami. He struck out five without issuing a walk. Civale found himself in a bases-loaded jam in the first inning but managed to escape the frame, limiting the damage to just one run. The 28-year old hurler then gave up a solo homer to Jazz Chisholm in the third and would eventually exit the game down 2-1 after five. Luckily, Tampa Bay's bats came alive in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs to take a 4-2 lead and secure Civale his second win since joining the Rays at the trade deadline. In his nine second-half starts, the righty now owns a 2.72 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 39:8 K:BB across 49.2 innings. He is tentatively slated to face the Red Sox at home early next week.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Fans nine in no-decision

Civale came away with a no-decision Wednesday in the Rays' 6-5 extra-inning win over the Rockies, giving up three runs on four hits over five-plus innings. He struck out nine without walking a batter. It was Civale's most dominant performance since joining Tampa Bay at the trade deadline, as he generated an eye-popping 35 called or swinging strikes on only 80 pitches. Despite that effort, he was in line for his fourth loss of the year after putting the first two batters aboard in the top of the sixth inning and watching both come around to score after he'd left the mound, but a late rally by the Rays got the right-hander off the hook. Civale has a 3.54 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 20:2 K:BB through 20.1 innings in August, and he'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is likely to come early next week in Miami.

  • Rays' Aaron Civale: Blanks San Francisco in win

Civale (6-3) earned the win Wednesday, allowing five hits and a walk over six scoreless innings against the Giants. He struck out five. It was the first win for Civale since he was traded from Cleveland at the deadline. He's now 1-1 through his first three starts with Tampa while allowing five runs over 15.1 innings. Overall, Civale's ERA is down to 2.44 with a 1.12 WHIP and 69:24 K:BB across 16 starts (92.1 innings) between the Rays and Guardians. He's currently lined up for a favorable home matchup with the Rockies in his next outing.
