Player Outlook
Willy Adames' 2023 campaign was a frustrating one, as he clubbed 24-plus homers for the third straight year and had a career-best 11.7 percent walk rate, but his .217/.310/.417 slash line left plenty to be desired. He may have deserved some better results with a .242 xBA and .442 SLG, but he saw his hard-hit rate drop by over seven points to 36.1 percent, while he also swung at more pitches out of the zone (a career-high 35.6 percent). He still provided strong defense at shortstop with plus-eight DRS, which is likely why he was able to retain his everyday spot in the lineup. Adames had relatively neutral home/road splits during his first full season with Milwaukee in 2022, but he was awful on the road last year with a .665 OPS. He could be a buy-low candidate for 2024 given his previous success but will obviously come with some risk for fantasy managers, especially if struggles persist away from American Family Field.

The shortstop had just one hit over 16 September at-bats coming in, which was also a three-run homer. He's also struck out at least one time in six straight games. With that said, Adames has homered in four of his last 16 contests, batting .254 over that stretch while also driving in 16 runs.

Adames went 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs and three RBI in Saturday's loss to the Reds. The shortstop has found his power stroke of late, swatting four homers and driving in eight runs over his past four games. His overall slash line still sits at just .213/.294/.415, but with 16 long balls before the All-Star break, Adames has a shot at a second consecutive 30-homer campaign.

  • Brewers' Willy Adames: Could return from IL on Thursday

Adames (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Wisconsin on Sunday and could be reinstated from the 7-day injured list as soon as Thursday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Adames is slated to serve as Wisconsin's designated hitter Sunday in what will be his first game action since he sustained a concussion after being struck by a line drive off the bat of teammate Brian Anderson while he was spectating in the dugout in a May 26 game against the Giants. The 27-year-old has seemingly made strong progress in his recovery over the past week and a half, and heading out on a rehab assignment marks the final hurdle he'll need to clear before being activated. Assuming Adames experiences no setbacks coming out of Sunday's contest, he'll shift his rehab assignment to Triple-A Nashville, where he's expected to make starts at shortstop Tuesday and Wednesday.
