The Blue Jays placed Rodriguez on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with thoracic spine inflammation. Rodriguez began experiencing soreness in his back following his start against the Royals on Monday. He was initially labeled as day-to-day Tuesday, but further evaluation resulted in a stint on the injured list being the recommended course of action. Zach Pop will come up from the minors to fill the void in Toronto's pitching staff, though it is unclear who will take Rodriguez's spot in the starting rotation.... See More ... See Less

Blue Jays' Yariel Rodriguez: Dealing with back soreness
Rodriguez is experiencing back soreness after Monday's start against the Royals and is considered day-to-day, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. Rodriguez's back issues flared up again following Monday's 3.2-inning start, a resurgence of an injury that bothered him throughout spring training. With his next scheduled start coming Sunday at Washington, Rodriguez will have some time to heal up. However, with Alek Manoah (shoulder) nearing a return and making what's likely to be his last rehab start Tuesday, the Blue Jays could push Rodriguez back to the bullpen and give Manoah the ball Sunday.... Blue Jays' Yariel Rodriguez: Inefficient against KC
Rodriguez didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out one. Rodriguez struggled to get quick outs, getting pulled after 82 pitches without completing four innings. He's yet to go deeper than four frames this season and owns a 4.11 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP on the year. If Alek Manoah (shoulder) isn't ready to rejoin the rotation, Rodriguez should slot into another start Sunday at Washington.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Yariel Rodriguez: Set to start Friday
Rodriguez will start Friday against the Padres, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Rodriguez impressed in his major-league debut Saturday against the Rockies, allowing run run with six strikeouts over 3.2 innings. While the right-hander will stick in the Blue Jays' rotation for now, the team will surely need to curtail his workload eventually. Rodriguez didn't pitch at all in 2023 and was used as a reliever in Japan in 2022.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Yariel Rodriguez: Punches out six in big-league debut
Rodriguez allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six over 3.2 innings in a no-decision against the Rockies on Saturday. The right-hander threw 68 pitches in his major-league debut, and the extent of the damage was a Brenton Doyle solo homer in the third inning. Rodriguez induced 12 swinging strikes while mixing in hesitations to his delivery and playing with different arm angles, as noted by Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. Blue Jays manager John Schneider praised Rodriguez's performance after the game, saying the 27-year-old was "electric" and that the team "couldn't have asked for much more." Rodriguez makes for an interesting pickup in fantasy with the assumption that he's sticking in the starting rotation, though the team may continue to limit his pitch count for the time being given Rodriguez didn't pitch professionally in 2023 after defecting from Cuba.... Blue Jays' Yariel Rodriguez: Will be recalled Saturday
Rodriguez is with the Blue Jays in Toronto and will be officially recalled prior to Saturday's game versus the Rockies, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. Whether he will start Saturday's game is not yet clear. Bowden Francis is currently scheduled for Saturday's start, but he's been torched for 12 runs over his first 8.1 innings. Toronto could also utilize Rodriguez as long relief protection in the event Francis has another short outing. Rodriguez has tossed 6.1 shutout innings with a 10:3 K:BB in his first two starts with Triple-A Buffalo.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Yariel Rodriguez: To be promoted to majors
The Blue Jays plan to promote Rodriguez to the major-league club sometime this weekend, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Rodriguez joined the Blue Jays this offseason on a multi-year deal after pitching in Japan for the previous four seasons. He's started a pair of games with Triple-A Buffalo, working a total of 6.1 shutout innings with a 10:3 K:BB. It's unclear how the club intends to deploy Rodriguez, though he may take the rotation spot of Bowden Francis, who has struggled significantly early on in the campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Yariel Rodriguez: Yields one run in spring debut
Rodriguez (back) permitted one run in two innings of work Sunday versus the Twins in his Grapefruit League debut. Rodriguez served up a solo home run to Brooks Lee in the first inning, but that was the only hit he allowed. He walked one, struck out a pair and touched 96.8 mph with his fastball, per Francys Romero of MLB.com. It's not clear what the Blue Jays' plans are for Rodriguez's role at the beginning of the season. His abbreviated spring and lack of pitching in 2023 work against him claiming one of the rotation spots open while Kevin Gausman (shoulder) and Alek Manoah (shoulder) are out, however.... Blue Jays' Yariel Rodriguez: Making spring debut versus Twins
Rodriguez (back) is scheduled to start Sunday's split-squad Grapefruit League game versus the Twins. The 27-year-old right-hander from Cuba -- who signed a four-year, $24.4 million deal with Toronto in February -- is expected to cover approximately two innings Saturday in what will be his Blue Jays and spring debut. The Blue Jays haven't yet decided on whether Rodriguez will begin the 2024 season as a starter or a multi-inning option out of the bullpen, though Toronto has two spots in the Opening Day rotation available with both Kevin Gausman (shoulder) and Alek Manoah (shoulder) likely to start the campaign on the injured list. Bowden Francis appears to have an edge on one of the available starting spots, but the competition for the No. 5 slot in the rotation appears to be up for grabs.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Yariel Rodriguez: Slated for live BP on Friday
Rodriguez (back) came out of a bullpen session Sunday well and is slated to throw live batting practice Friday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. Rodriguez has yet to make his Grapefruit League debut as he deals with back spasms. While he's moving in the right direction, he doesn't have a ton of time to prep for Opening Day, especially considering he didn't pitch anywhere in 2023. Rodriguez is slated for a long-term starting role but, if healthy, could open the season in long relief.... See More ... See Less

Andrew Stoeten@AndrewStoeten11D agoSo far the 2024 Blue Jays have basically been what fans allowed themselves to believe the 2023 Jays were. There’s plenty of room and opportunity for improvement, but things ain’t good. I wrote about it. https://t.co/xYAMynxmzZ https://t.co/8TlX9jKte1
