Player Outlook
Freddy Tarnok was one of the top prospects acquired by Oakland in the three-way deal that shipped Sean Murphy to Atlanta, but the right-hander dealt with injuries throughout the 2023 campaign and he was shut down in August after undergoing season-ending hip surgery; a surgery that will see the right-hander slowed to begin the 2024 season, as well. When healthy, the 25-year-old right-hander has three pitches that have shown the potential to miss bats in his fastball, slider and change, but he doesn't always have great command of those offerings, and consistency has been an issue since he was drafted by Atlanta back in 2017. There's potential for long-term success for Tarnok, but he should be firmly off radars to begin 2024, even if he's able to earn a spot in the Oakland rotation in the early portion of the year.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Starts up rehab assignment

Tarnok (hip) struck out one batter and allowed one hit over a scoreless inning in his first rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Las Vegas. Tarnok tossed only 10 pitches before his day came to an end, but the light workload could have been part of a pre-planned arrangement as the right-hander slowly ramps his way back up from right hip surgery, which he underwent in late August. The 25-year-old resides on the Athletics' 60-day injured list and won't be eligible for activation until late May, so he'll have plenty of time to build up his innings and pitch counts as he stretches back out for a starting role. Tarnok has two minor-league options remaining, so he could end up sticking around with Las Vegas if Oakland doesn't have an opening for him in the rotation once his 30-day rehab window closes.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Moves to 60-day IL

The Athletics transferred Tarnok (hip) to the 60-day injured list Friday. Tarnok's move to the 60-day IL will make him ineligible to return until May 28, though the A's were likely always going to take their time building him back up. The 25-year-old righty is scheduled to resume mound work soon and will likely require a minor-league rehab assignment before returning to Oakland's pitching staff. Brett Harris was selected from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill Tarnok's roster spot.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Set for bullpen session

Tarnok (hip) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session and live BP later in the week, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Tarnok received a cortisone injection earlier in the month after experiencing inflammation in his surgically repaired right hip, and he's now on track to return to mound work this week. The club figures to take its time easing him back into action considering the right-hander has already had a setback following surgery.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Gets cortisone shot

Tarnok (hip) recently received a cortisone injection and could progress to pitching off a mound next week, the Associated Press reports. Tarnok recently received an MRI, and the cortisone shot may have been the prescribed method of treatment that emerged from that evaluation. The fact the right-hander appears to be trending towards starting a throwing program is encouraging, but Tarnok still needs some time before getting into any action with Triple-A Las Vegas.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: MRI on tap

Tarnok is slated for an MRI on his hip after feeling discomfort during a recent bullpen session, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Tarnok is already on the injured list and slated to start his 2024 season at Triple-A Las Vegas whenever he's ready for game action. However, that benchmark now appears to be even further away, given this latest development. The results of Tarnok's MRI should be available in the coming days, potentially offering further insight into a recovery timetable.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Officially hits injured list

The Athletics placed Tarnok (hip) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Tarnok's placement on the IL was expected after he was shut down from throwing in early March due to inflammation in his surgically repaired right hip. Manager Mark Kotsay has already confirmed Tarnok will begin the season at Triple-A Las Vegas when he's healthy. The right-hander logged 14.2 innings across five appearances (one start) with the Athletics last season and is expected to see time in the majors during the 2024 campaign.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Will begin season at Triple-A

Tarnok (hip), who threw a 20-pitch, all-fastballs bullpen session Tuesday, is set to begin the season with Triple-A Las Vegas, MLB.com reports. Manager Mark Kotsay confirmed Wednesday that Tarnok will open the season with the Aviators, although the move has yet to be made official. Tarnok's next bullpen session will therefore come in minor-league camp, and if he continues without setbacks, he could be ready to join the major-league club before the end of April.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Shut down after setback

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Wednesday that Tarnok is currently shut down after having a setback with his surgically repaired right hip, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Tarnok had surgery last August and entered camp behind schedule. He has yet to appear in a Cactus League game, and now that he's experienced a setback, Tarnok looks like a virtual lock to begin the season on the injured list. Once healthy, Tarnok could be a candidate to join the Oakland rotation.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Sent to 60-day IL

The Athletics transferred Tarnok (hip) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday. Tarnok underwent surgery on his right hip in late August, effectively ending his season. As such, the move to the 60-day injured list doesn't affect Tarnok's timeline for a return, though it creates an open spot on the 28-man active roster for Joe Boyle, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Las Vegas ahead of his scheduled start Sunday versus the Padres.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Diagnosed with calf strain

Tarnok is dealing with a Grade 2 right calf strain, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Tarnok was placed on the 15-day injured list earlier Tuesday, and the reason for his deactivation is now known. Manager Mark Kotsay said Tarnok will be shut down in the interim, so the rookie looks set to miss more time than the minimum 15 days.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Working in bulk role Wednesday

Tarnok will serve as the primary pitcher for the Athletics on Wednesday against the Rangers, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. The Athletics will likely deploy an opener in front of him, but Tarnok is slated to work multiple innings Wednesday and profiles as the Oakland pitcher most likely to factor into any decision. The 24-year-old right-hander has posted a 6.75 ERA and 10:9 K:BB through 10.2 major-league frames this season. He looks like he could get a spin in the No. 5 spot in the rotation after Oakland recently demoted Hogan Harris to Triple-A Las Vegas.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Pitches to contact as opener

Tarnok served as the opener in Wednesday's loss to the Giants and allowed three runs on three hits and a walk over 2.2 innings. He struck out four and uncorked a wild pitch. Tarnok took the next step in his 2023 acclimation process after a significantly delayed debut due to a shoulder strain, but he turned in an uneven performance. The right-hander needed 49 pitches to record eight outs, and only 29 of those offerings found the strike zone. Tarnok worked himself into trouble early as well, surrendering a two-run home run to J.D. Davis in the first inning that set the stage for the ragged outing. The fact Tarnok got the call as an opener following a pair of relief appearances to open the season could be indicative of a potential rotation audition down the road, but manager Mark Kotsay likely wants to see the 24-year-old get his feet under him a bit more before going that route.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Activated and optioned

Tarnok (shoulder) was activated off the 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday. Tarnok had been out all season while dealing with a strained shoulder. He's made four starts for Las Vegas while on a rehab assignment, recording a 1.84 ERA despite an 8:10 K:BB. He'll remain in Triple-A as a regular member of the roster but could be an option for an A's rotation that lacks proven talent at some point in the second half.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Blister issue on rehab assignment

Tarnok (shoulder) dealt with a blister issue during his rehab start with Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Tarnok gave up two runs in four innings while getting his pitch count up to 61 in the outing but developed a blister. He's considered day-to-day, so it's possible he could be ready in time for his next rehab start. Tarnok has been on the injured list all season with a right shoulder strain.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Next rehab start set

Tarnok (shoulder) has felt good since his most recent rehab start for Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday and will make his next appearance for the Aviators this coming Wednesday, the team's official site reports. The fact Tarnok upped his pitch count from 42 to 53 in that most recent outing and came away with no residual effects is yet another encouraging sign for the right-hander. If all goes similarly well for Tarnok in this next start, activation from his season-long stay on the injured list could be deemed appropriate.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Stellar in latest rehab start

Tarnok (shoulder) fired four scoreless innings in Triple-A Las Vegas' loss to Oklahoma City on Wednesday, allowing three hits while recording two strikeouts. Tarnok has gotten more impressive with each rehab appearance, and Wednesday's outing saw him work up to 53 pitches. The promising right-hander would likely need at least one more start on the farm before being built up enough to be activated with an eye on joining the big-league rotation, but the fact he's already tossed 6.2 scoreless frames in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League supports the notion he'll have the ability to offer a boost to Oakland's starting pitching arsenal.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Bullpen session on tap

Tarnok (shoulder) is slated to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, the Associated Press reports. The right-hander continues to inch closer to a potential rehab assignment, with Tuesday's scheduled session coming in the wake of a live batting practice Saturday. Tarnok also got through a simulated game last Tuesday, so he may be deemed ready to jump into game action if the bullpen session goes well.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Dealing with arm issue

Tarnok hasn't pitched in a Cactus League game since March 8 due to right arm discomfort, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Initial reports suggested it was a thumb issue Tarnok was dealing with, but apparently it's his pitching arm. He's undergoing tests and the Athletics should have a clearer idea of what's going on with the right-hander soon. Tarnok came over to the Athletics from Atlanta in the Sean Murphy trade. If healthy, he's likely to start 2023 at Triple-A Las Vegas.

  • Braves' Freddy Tarnok: Moves back to minors

Atlanta optioned Tarnok to Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday. One of the organization's top pitching prospects, Tarnok was summoned from Triple-A earlier this week despite having made only five starts for Gwinnett following his mid-July promotion from Double-A Mississippi. Atlanta was likely just keeping Tarnok on hand as an insurance option in case neither Max Fried (concussion) or Kyle Wright (arm) was able to start this week, but Fried will take the hill for Thursday's series finale with the Mets, while Wright will go Friday against Houston. Tarnok at least received the chance to make his MLB debut out of the bullpen Wednesday, working two-thirds of an inning and striking out a batter in Atlanta's 9-7 loss.

  • Braves' Freddy Tarnok: Gets call-up to majors

Atlanta recalled Tarnok from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday. Tarnok becomes the third pitching prospect to join Atlanta within the past few days, after Kyle Muller and Bryce Elder were previously called up and then optioned back to Gwinnett following spot starts against the Marlins over the weekend. Atlanta hasn't immediately announced its plans for Tarnok, but if he isn't needed out of the bullpen Tuesday or Wednesday, he could be called upon to make a spot start Thursday against the Mets or Friday against the Astros if neither Max Fried (concussion) nor Kyle Wright (arm) is ready to make his next turn through the rotation. Between stops at Gwinnett and Double-A Mississippi this season, the 23-year-old Tarnok has produced a 3.63 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 101 strikeouts over 89.1 innings.
