Player Outlook
Known heading into 2023 as one of the most alluring sluggers in the lower minors, Emmanuel Rodriguez essentially treaded water at High-A. His 16 home runs, .223 ISO and 36.5 Hard% were at or maybe slightly below expectations over 99 games, and his 29.5 percent strikeout rate did nothing to lessen long-term hit tool concerns. He hit .287 with a 26.5 percent strikeout rate in 42 games after the All-Star break while maintaining an elite 21.4 percent walk rate, so there were signs of improvements down the stretch. Until further notice, Rodriguez projects as a three-true-outcomes slugger who will be better in OBP leagues than batting average leagues and could run into a wall against upper-level pitchers who can locate and throw multiple offerings for strikes. Unlike most corner-outfield sluggers, Rodriguez has enough speed to steal double-digit bases early in his career. He can handle center field in a pinch and has a plus arm that would fit well in right field. Rodriguez is already on the 40-man roster, but he probably won't be big-league ready until sometime in 2025.

  • Twins' Emmanuel Rodriguez: Hot start at Double-A

Rodriguez is hitting .391 with three home runs and a 1.548 OPS through seven games for Double-A Wichita. It's a small sample and he as a .545 BABIP, but it's a promising start to the season. He had an .870 OPS with 16 home runs and 20 stolen bases at High-A last season. Rodriguez has tantalizing power but needs to reduce his strikeouts (29.5 K% last season), so it is a little worrisome his hot streak also comes with a 29 percent strikeout rate.

  • Twins' Emmanuel Rodriguez: Treading water at High-A

Rodriguez is slashing .219/.378/.371 with seven home runs, 10 steals and a 28.9 percent strikeout rate in 50 games since coming off the injured list with High-A Cedar Rapids. On the season, Rodriguez has 10 home runs, 10 steals and a .206 average while walking or striking out in 51 percent of his 259 plate appearances (31.7 K%, 19.3 BB%). Rodriguez's 37.7 percent hard-hit rate is excellent, but it's not otherworldly like the 50 percent hard-hit rate he posted in 2022. He missed three weeks earlier this season with an abdominal strain.

  • Twins' Emmanuel Rodriguez: Activated from injured list

Rodriguez (abdominal strain) has been activated from the 7-day injured list at High-A Cedar Rapids, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. Rodriguez hit three home runs in his first seven games at Cedar Rapids before the injury. He was 5-for-27 with three homers and a .954 OPS, but he did have 17 strikeouts. Rodriguez's combination of excellent plate skills and monster power at such a young age (20) have made him a popular breakout pick in 2023. However, he needs to show he can stay healthy, as a torn right meniscus ended Rodriguez's 2022 campaign.

The 20-year-old was putting up stellar numbers prior to the injury with a .272/.492/.551 slash along with nine homers over 199 plate appearances. Considered one of the more intriguing prospects in the lower levels, Rodriguez has a good chance of providing fantasy relevance in the coming years.

  • Twins' Emmanuel Rodriguez: Showing elite on-base skills

Rodriguez is hitting .258/.457/.484 with five homers, seven steals and a 31:35 BB:K through 30 games for Single-A Fort Myers. The pop he showed early on has dried up, as he's homerless over his last 16 games -- and yet he's put up a .449 OBP and five steals in that time. The 19-year-old outfielder remains a fascinating prospect with a wide spectrum of potential outcomes, but with his on-base skills and power, there's a lot to like. The keys for Rodriguez will be cutting down on his swing-and-miss and getting to his power in game situations more consistently.
