Player Outlook
A sixth-round pick in 2019, Cody Bradford made his big-league debut last May at the age of 25. He rode the shuttle in the months that followed before settling in with the Rangers down the stretch. The left-hander was added to the roster in the postseason and ended up making a handful of playoff appearances, including a couple scoreless appearances in the World Series. While Bradford struggled occasionally with the long ball, he turned in a respectable 16.7 K-BB% with Texas during the regular season. He does not bring great velocity, though the heat plays up thanks to his extension, and he can pull the string on the changeup at 82.1 mph. Bradford also mixes in a slider as his main breaking pitch. The presumptive favorite for the fifth starter spot entering spring training, Bradford will have to perform in the Cactus League to secure the role. He will face stiff competition in the rotation if/when the Rangers get healthy later this summer.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Managing rib stress fracture

Bradford (back) was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his rib Friday and is expected to be sidelined for about a month, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. The left-hander wasn't progressing as expected in his recovery after landing on the shelf April 14 with lower-back soreness, and a rib stress fracture is the apparent culprit. Bradford will now be sidelined through at least late May, and a more specific timeline should come into focus as he ramps up his rehab work.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Out with back injury

Texas placed Bradford on the 15-day injured list Sunday with lower back soreness, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.comreports. Bradford earned a longer look in Texas' starting rotation after he began the season 3-0 with a 1.40 ERA, 0.62 WHIP and 17:2 K:BB over 19.1 innings, but he'll now be unavailable due to the back issue. Michael Lorenzen will take the open spot in the rotation, and he will be starting Monday at Detroit.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Fires gem Friday

Bradford (2-0) yielded one run on two hits over 7.2 frames Friday, striking out four and earning a win over the Astros. Bradford dominated Houston on Friday, spinning seven shutout frames before the Astros finally pushed a run home in the eighth inning. The 26-year-old wasn't expected to last long in the Rangers' rotation but he may be forcing them to reconsider. Through two starts, he's posted an impressive 10:1 K:BB with a 2.13 ERA over 12.2 innings.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Picks up win Saturday

Bradford (1-0) earned a victory Saturday versus the Cubs, permitting two runs on three hits and a walk over five frames. He struck out six. Bradford left a fastball up in the second inning to Dansby Swanson, who deposited it over the left-field wall for a two-run homer. That wound up being the only damage against the left-hander, as he needed just 76 pitches to cruise through his five frames. Bradford is expected to lose his spot in the Rangers' rotation once Michael Lorenzen (neck) is deemed ready, but he should get at least one more turn.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Will make at least one start

Rangers general manager Chris Young said Friday that Bradford will make at least one start early on in the season, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. Bradford is expected to lose his spot in Texas' rotation following the addition of Michael Lorenzen, but the club has yet to determine when Lorenzen will be ready to take the mound. Even if he's not part of the first turn through the rotation, the left-handed Bradford will likely be needed when the Rangers play 17 days in a row in the middle of April. After that, it's not clear whether the plan is to shift him to the bullpen or keep him stretched out in the Triple-A Round Rock rotation.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Bumped from rotation

Bradford looks to no longer have a spot in the Rangers' rotation following the addition of Michael Lorenzen, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. After signing earlier this week, Lorenzen confirmed in an interview Friday that he will join the Rangers' rotation. Bradford had previously been named the team's fifth starter but now could shift to the bullpen or Triple-A Round Rock, although it's possible he will be needed for a start or two if Lorenzen isn't deemed ready yet.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Confirmed for rotation

Rangers general manager Chris Young said Saturday that Bradford will begin the season in the starting rotation, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. The 26-year-old lefty entered camp as the favorite to open the season as Texas' No. 5 starter, and his 2.45 ERA and 9:2 K:BB over 11 spring innings likely helped him secure the role. Bradford worked as a swingman as a rookie last season and had a 5.30 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 51:12 K:BB across 20 outings (eight starts) overall, though he pitched much better in his 12 relief outings with a 2.82 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP in 22.1 frames.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Keeps getting outs

Bradford allowed one run on five hits and struck out two over four innings in Sunday's spring start against the Cubs. Bradford made his fourth spring appearance and fourth start. He's allowed three runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out nine over 11 innings. He doesn't blow hitters away and needs to command, use deception and control the zone in order to be successful. The left-hander told Kennedi Landry of MLB.com that he left too many pitches over the heart of the plate, which led to loud contact. He's expected to be the Rangers' fifth starter.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Touched for run in spring debut

Bradford allowed a run on two hits and struck out one over two innings in Friday's spring start against the Royals. Bradford, who is the leading contender to be fifth starter, was the lone Ranger to throw multiple innings. The right-hander followed Dane Dunning, who pitched a perfect first inning. Bradford ceded a two-out solo home run in the second inning before a 1-2-3 third inning. He may open the season in the rotation, but it's not expected to be a full-season assignment. Texas has three injured starters due back at various points during the season. Additionally, Bradford's track record -- 6.95 ERA, .884 OPS, 1.6 HR/9 over 33.2 innings as a starter in 2023 -- suggests the back end of the Rangers' rotation could be in flux.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Will pitch Friday

Bradford is set to follow Dane Dunning in the Rangers' Cactus League opener against the Royals on Friday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. The left-hander made his MLB debut in 2023 after spending time with Triple-A Round Rock. He bounced between the minors and majors during the regular season, and he worked as both a starter and reliever with the big club. Bradford finished last season with a 4-3 record for Texas while accruing a 5.30 ERA, 51 strikeouts and 12 walks over 56 innings. He's looking to lock down a spot at the back end of the Rangers' starting rotation during spring training.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Lit up in start

Bradford (4-3) allowed six runs on seven hits and struck out three without walking a batter over four innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Angels. Bradford was initially expected to serve as an opener, but he ended up covering the most innings of the Rangers' four pitchers Tuesday. He struggled right out of the gate, allowing a three-run home run to Brandon Drury in the first inning. Bradford now has a 5.30 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 49:12 K:BB through 54.1 innings over 19 outings (eight starts) this season. He's given up 12 runs over his last seven innings, but he may be needed to make another appearance against the Mariners this weekend with the Rangers' rotation a bit thin.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Tagged with six runs

Bradford (4-2) yielded six runs on seven hits over three-plus innings Sunday, striking out two and taking a loss against Cleveland. Bradford looked strong through three shutout frames before a disastrous fourth inning. He coughed up six straight hits and was charged with six runs during the Guardians' nine-run frame. Bradford was riding a 7.1-inning scoreless streak entering Sunday but saw his ERA jump to 4.65 through 50.1 innings.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Opening pitcher Sunday

Bradford will serve as Texas' opening pitcher in Sunday's game against the Guardians, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. Bradford threw 42 pitches over 2.2 innings of relief Thursday at Toronto and will probably be asked to cover only the first two or three frames Sunday at Cleveland. The 25-year-old left-hander has posted an overall 3.80 ERA and 44:12 K:BB across 47.1 major-league innings this season with the Rangers.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Recalled from Round Rock

Texas recalled Bradford from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday. Sam Huff is the other September call-up for the Rangers. Bradford carries a 4.50 ERA and 37:11 K:BB in 40 innings this season at the major-league level and will likely slide into a long relief role.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Optioned to minors

Bradford was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday. Bradford pitched well in spot duty his past two outings with three earned runs allowed across eight innings, and he'll head down to the minors with Texas' trade acquisitions joining the active roster. The 25-year-old has a 4.50 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 37:11 K:BB across 40 innings this season, and it's likely only a matter of time before he rejoins the big-league bullpen.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Fans five in no-decision

Bradford allowed one run on four hits and three walks over three innings in Sunday's loss to San Diego. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. Bradford limited the damage to just one run despite finding himself in a couple of jams in his short outing. He's been a solid bulk-innings option for Texas lately; he registered a 3.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP over 20.2 innings in July. Bradford will likely move back to a more traditional bullpen role after the Rangers' recent acquisitions of Max Scherzer and Jordan Montgomery.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Starting Sunday

Bradford will start Sunday's game against the Padres, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The left-hander allowed two runs over five frames in bulk relief Tuesday and will work as a traditional starter for Sunday's series finale in San Diego, with Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) missing a second straight turn through the rotation. Even with Eovaldi's availability up in the air for the near future, it'll likely just be a spot start for Bradford since the Rangers acquired Max Scherzer from the Mets on Saturday.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Delivers five solid frames

Bradford gave up two runs on six hits and no walks across five innings during Tuesday's 4-3 loss at Houston. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. The left-hander was initially expected to start Tuesday but was instead used in a bulk role behind opener Yerry Rodriguez. Bradford surrendered a pair of solo homers but was otherwise able to keep the Astros off the board. The Rangers had an open rotation spot Tuesday with Nathan Eovaldi (rest) having his turn skipped, and Bradford should return to a more traditional relief role with team off days on deck Thursday and Monday.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Collects first MLB win

Bradford (1-1) picked up the win in Friday's 7-2 victory over the Nationals, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out one. While he wasn't dominant, the rookie southpaw generated plenty of soft contact en route to his first career big-league win. Bradford has a 2.70 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 17:5 K:BB through 16,2 innings over five appearances (three starts) since the beginning of June, and he's the Rangers' top option right now as a sixth starter/swingman, a role which gives him some fantasy appeal considering the strength of the offense supporting him.

  • Rangers' Cody Bradford: Makes latest appearance in relief

Bradford most recently appeared out of the bullpen for the Rangers' 12-11 loss to the Astros on Monday, covering 2.1 perfect innings while striking out four. Since being called up from Triple-A Round Rock on June 13, Bradford has made just four appearances, with two coming as a starter and two coming as a reliever. His pair of starts came amid a heavy stretch of games in which the Rangers wanted to build in some extra rest for the other five members of the rotation, but Bradford looks as though he'll stick in the bullpen through the All-Star break. The Rangers may use the upcoming break to send Bradford back to Round Rock, though the rookie southpaw should be the organization's top choice to rejoin the big-league rotation should Texas lose a starter at any point.
