The Tigers all of a sudden have a decent amount of starting pitching depth, so while Ty Madden could be ready sometime this summer, there's no guarantee a spot will be open. A 6-foot-3 righty with a plus fastball and a plus slider, Madden has thrown over 115 innings in back-to-back seasons. He still hasn't reached Triple-A, but he has made 33 appearances at Double-A, dating back to 2022. Madden's 10.2 percent walk rate was the closest thing to a blemish on his 2023 season, and while scouts project him for average control, it's not a given that he'll be a starter long term. His changeup, cutter and curveball are middling or worse offerings, and he could potentially touch triple digits with his fastball if he were working out of the bullpen. Madden won't need to be added to the 40-man roster as Rule 5 draft protection until after the 2024 season, so he needs to force the issue to debut this year.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Promoted to Triple-A

Madden was promoted to Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Emily Waldon of Baseball America reports. Madden has made four starts with Double-A Erie this season, producing a 2.55 ERA and 0.79 WHIP with 22 strikeouts over 17.2 innings. He'll now get a chance to continue his hot start to 2024 at the next level, joining Triple-A for the first time in his career. In a corresponding move, right-hander Austin Bergner was optioned from Toledo to Double-A Erie.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Getting run in big-league camp

Madden is getting a look in major-league spring training, though manager A.J. Hinch said the righty will start the year in the minors, MLB.com reports. This isn't much of a surprise, as Madden hasn't appeared above the Double-A level yet in his career. However, the 23-year-old is an intriguing prospect, and he could force the issue if he looks good this spring and carries that over to the minor-league season. Madden may get a shot with Triple-A Toledo at some point and then could be in line for his MLB debut later this year if he stays on his current trajectory.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Finishes strong at Double-A

Madden has a 2.43 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 50 strikeouts in 37 innings over his last seven starts for Double-A Erie. The 23-year-old righty has a 3.43 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 146 strikeouts in 118 innings at Double-A after making seven starts at the level to close out 2022. Madden can get in trouble when he walks too many batters, but he's struck out seven or more batters in five of his last seven starts, thanks in large part to his plus slider. He will likely open next season at Triple-A, but Madden is poised to make his big-league debut sometime in 2024.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Reassigned to minor-league camp

Madden was reassigned to minor-league camp Wednesday, Emily Waldon of The Athletic reports. Madden spent the first few days of spring training at major-league camp as a non-roster invitee, but he'll report to minor-league camp ahead of Grapefruit League games in preparation for his professional debut at one of the organization's affiliates.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Heading to big-league camp

Madden earned an invitation to major-league spring training Saturday. Madden joins several top prospects at big-league camp, but he's nowhere near pushing for a roster spot. The 2021 first-round pick didn't pitch in a competitive game last season after getting drafted, so he's still yet to make his professional debut, let alone his MLB debut.
