The Giants optioned Schmitt to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Schmitt's chance at an Opening Day roster spot probably went away when the club signed Nick Ahmed, but he didn't help himself in going 3-for-26 at the dish this spring. The 25-year-old should bounce around the infield as a regular at Sacramento.... See More ... See Less

Giants' Casey Schmitt: In mix for shortstop job
Schmitt is in the mix to be the Giants' starting shortstop, though he begins the spring behind Marco Luciano on the depth chart, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Schmitt is a versatile defender who could also slot in at second base or third base. He appeared in 90 games for the Giants as a rookie last season, posting a .206/.255/.324 slash line with five home runs, 30 RBI, 28 runs scored, 15 doubles and two stolen bases. Schmitt could end up being a utility option, but his strong defense should allow him to open the season in the majors.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Casey Schmitt: Homers twice in finale
Schmitt went 2-for-3 with a pair of solo home runs in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Dodgers. Schmitt was responsible for all of San Francisco's offense in the loss. He got the Giants on the board with a homer off Ryan Pepiot in the sixth inning, just his second in his last 86 games, before adding another long ball in the fifth. After going 26-for-76 (.342) with a .851 OPS in his first 20 major-league games, Schmidt struggled to a .147 average (26-for-177) in his final 70 contests. The 24-year-old infielder will wrap up his rookie campaign with a .206/.255/.324 slash line, five homers, 30 RBI and two stolen bases across 277 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Casey Schmitt: Recalled from Triple-A
The Giants recalled Schmitt from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. J.D. Davis (shoulder) will be unavailable for the final weekend of the regular season, so Schmitt returns to the active roster as an option at third base. The 24-year-old has batted just .202/.254/.300 with three homers and two steals through his first 88 major-league games this season.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Casey Schmitt: Sent back to minors
Schmitt was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Schmitt loses his roster spot with Michael Conforto (hamstring) returning from the injured list. The rookie infielder has not been able to get things going offensively to this point at the big-league level, putting up just a .553 OPS in 88 contests.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Casey Schmitt: Heads to bench Sunday
Schmitt is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. Schmitt had started at third base or shortstop in each of the past eight games, going 6-for-24 with a home run, three doubles and two walks. Though he's swung the bat well of late, Schmitt is likely to fade into more of a part-time role in the San Francisco infield with Brandon Crawford recently returning from the injured list and with J.D. Davis returning to the lineup Saturday after missing one game with a sore hand.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Casey Schmitt: Ends homer drought
Schmitt went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 8-5 win over Atlanta. Schmitt homered twice over his first three major-league games, but that was it for his power until Sunday. The homer drought lasted 71 contests. The infielder is at a .199/.252/.292 slash line with 26 RBI, 23 runs scored, two stolen bases and 11 doubles through 236 plate appearances this season. Schmitt appears to have a lock on a short-side platoon role at third base while providing cover around the infield as a strong defender, but he hasn't hit well enough (2-for-19 in August) to justify a full-time role for a team in the wild-card chase.... Giants' Casey Schmitt: Returns to bench role
Schmitt is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Schmitt started at three different infield positions the last three games, going hitless across eight at-bats. Since June 19, Schmitt has mustered a .086/.202/.111 slash line over a stretch of 37 games. Though he's been valued for his defensive work, Schmitt's lack of production at the plate over a prolonged stretch looks as though it'll force him into a utility role even while the Giants are without Brandon Crawford (forearm). The Giants signed veteran Paul DeJong on Wednesday, and he's expected to take over as the team's everyday shortstop sans Crawford.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Casey Schmitt: Back in majors
The Giants recalled Schmitt from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Schmitt will offer the Giants extra depth in the infield while Ross Stripling (back) and Ryan Walker (paternity) are both out. The 24-year-old was optioned to Triple-A on Aug. 6 and has since slashed .311/.354/.533 with six RBI over 48 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Casey Schmitt: Optioned to minors
Schmitt was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday. Schmitt has been up with the big club since early May and has at times served as San Francisco's primary shortstop, but he'll head back to the minors with a .548 OPS in 218 plate appearances. Brandon Crawford has struggled in his own right this year with a .211/.281/.349 slash line, so Schmitt could receive another look in the majors before the end of the campaign.... See More ... Giants' Casey Schmitt: Serving as primary shortstop
Schmitt will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Nationals. Schmitt will stick in the lineup for a seventh consecutive game and looks poised to serve as the Giants' primary shortstop against both right- and left-handed pitching while Brandon Crawford (knee) is on the shelf. Since opening his big-league career with 26 hits in his first 20 games, Schmitt is batting an abysmal .124 with no home runs, eight runs and seven RBI over his subsequent 39 contests.... See More ... Giants' Casey Schmitt: Sitting Saturday
Schmitt isn't starting Saturday against the Pirates, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Schmitt will get a breather Saturday after going 1-for-4 with a double during Friday's contest. Brett Wisely will take over at the keystone and bat ninth while Schmitt sits.... See More ... Giants' Casey Schmitt: Not starting Saturday
Schmitt isn't in the Giants' lineup Saturday against the Rockies, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Schmitt has just one hit in 15 tries since the beginning of July, so he'll take a day off Saturday to regroup. While Schmitt sits, Brett Wisely will start at second base and bat ninth while Brandon Crawford covers short.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Casey Schmitt: Sitting Saturday
Schmitt isn't in the Giants' lineup Saturday against the Diamondbacks, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Schmitt is 1-for-12 across his last six games, though he still managed to reach base seven times in that span. He'll get a day off Saturday as Brandon Crawford starts at shortstop for the sixth time in seven games.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Casey Schmitt: Walks twice in return
Schmitt (arm) went 0-for-1 with two walks in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Padres. Schmitt was out of the starting lineup for a couple of games after he was hit by a pitch Sunday. He's drawn walks in four of his last six plate appearances, though he's gone just 3-for-22 since June 12. Prior to Monday, Schmitt had walked just one time in his first 35 big-league games. Schmitt will likely continue competing for playing time on the left side of the infield, primarily challenging J.D. Davis and Brandon Crawford for their spots in the lineup. Schmitt owns a .262/.302/.377 slash line with two home runs, 21 RBI, 16 runs scored and two stolen bases through 139 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Casey Schmitt: Remains out Tuesday
Schmitt (arm) will sit Tuesday versus the Padres, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Schmitt will miss a second consecutive contest after being hit in the arm by a pitch Sunday versus the Dodgers, but considering he was able to log two plate appearances in Monday's extra-inning win, the 24-year-old seems to be on the cusp of a return. Brandon Crawford will draw another start at shortstop and bat seventh against San Diego.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Casey Schmitt: X-rays negative
Schmitt (arm) underwent X-rays that came back negative after exiting Sunday's game against the Dodgers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Schmitt was removed from Sunday's matchup shortly after being hit by a pitch on his right arm, but he doesn't appear to be dealing with any structural damage. He should tentatively be considered day-to-day ahead of Monday's series opener against the Padres.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Casey Schmitt: Exits after HBP
Schmitt was removed from Sunday's game against the Dodgers in the bottom of the eighth inning due to an apparent right arm injury, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Schmitt was hit by a pitch on his right arm in the top of the eighth and initially stayed in the game to run the bases, but he was replaced defensively in the bottom half of the frame. Prior to his departure, he went 1-for-3 with two strikeouts. It's unclear whether he'll be available for Monday's series opener against the Padres.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Casey Schmitt: Not starting Friday
Schmitt is not in the starting lineup versus the Dodgers on Friday. Schmitt will take a seat after going just 1-for-11 over a series against the Cardinals. The rookie infielder will open the game on the bench with Brandon Crawford starting at shortstop and Wilmer Flores lined up at third base.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Casey Schmitt: Heads to bench
Schmitt will sit Saturday against the Cubs, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Schmitt had been set for an off day Friday but wound up needed at third base after J.D. Davis was scratched with a minor hip issue. Davis is back in the lineup Saturday, so Schmitt will get his day off one day later than originally planned. After starting his MLB career with 11 hits in his first five games, the rookie owns an .492 OPS in his last 23 contests.... See More ... See Less
