UPDATE: Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason announced the three players involved in the incident - Tae Daley, Frank Coppet and Donaven Tennyson have all been suspended indefinitely.
ORIGINAL STORY: Two Vanderbilt players are recovering from gunshot wounds after a meeting over a stolen cell phone turned violent, according to Nashville police. The Tennessean reports that defensive backs Tae Daley and Frank Coppet have suffered leg and arm injuries, respectively, after they were shot outside a Target on Monday night in an arranged meeting between two groups. The injuries are not considered critical.
A third Vanderbilt player, wide receiver Donaven Tennyson, reportedly arranged the meeting to recover a cell phone that had been stolen from him by another party in Nashville.
According to a preliminary investigation, Tennyson was selling his phone on the internet and met with a prospective buyer at a Chili's on Monday evening, during which time Tennyson said his cell phone was stolen. Tennyson then found his cell phone for sale on the same site and created a fake account as a prospective buyer to arrange another meeting. Tennyson brought Daley and Coppet along with him to the Target parking lot to recover his phone. Police say the three brought a pellet gun with them. That's when shots were fired.
The group pulled up next to the seller's gray Buick sedan and Coppet got out with the pellet pistol in his hand.
A man in the Buick then got out and shot at them with a real pistol, while police say another man in the Buick fired a shotgun.
Vanderbilt has not yet issued a statement regarding the matter. Tennyson recorded 28 yards on four carries in eight games last season. Coppet is a redshirt freshman, and Daley was an early enrollee in Vanderbilt's 2017 recruiting class.
