Boston College running back Montel Harris has been permanently dismissed from the football team due to a "repeated violation of team rules," the school announced on Tuesday."We are grateful for his contributions the past four seasons and will support him in completing his degree requirements and in his future pursuits," head coach Frank Spaziani said in an official release.
Harris, the 2011 Preseason ACC Player of the Year, earned a medical hardship waiver after several setbacks to a left knee injury kept him out of all but two games in his senior season. He was cleared to participate in the Eagles' practice this spring, but was quickly shut down after a re-aggravation on the first day of drills.
As Boston College's all-time leader in career rushing yards (3,735) and carries (786), Harris' absence was thought to be a major reason for the offensive struggles in 2011 - and hope for improvement in 2012.
Harris has missed a majority of the Eagles' contact activity over the last 12 months, with every doctor's clearance seemingly followed by more swelling and soreness in the injured left knee.
With Harris out of the picture, the running back duties will be mostly shared by junior Rolandan Finch and sophomore Tajh Kimble - both listed as starters on the 2012 spring depth chart.
No longer the ACC's active leader in rushing yards and carries, Harris finishes his Boston College career just 868 yards short of overtaking NC State's Ted Brown as the conference's all-time rushing leader.
