Cody Franson: Signs two-year pact with Russian club
Franson signed a two-year contract with Avangard Omsk of the KHL on Wednesday, Igor Eronko of Sport-Express reports.
Avangard's challengers should expect additional bumps and bruises the next two seasons, as physicality and grit have been the staple of Franson's game. He amassed 987 hits to go along with his 212 points (43 goals, 169 assists) over 550 career NHL contests split between the Maple Leafs, Predators, Sabres and Blackhawks, respectively.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Placed on waivers
Franson landed on the waiver wire Monday, Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports.
Franson is averaging a mere 14:03 of ice time in his four games back from injury and was a healthy scratch versus the Oilers on Sunday. The blueliner was getting looks on the power play during this stretch, which makes the move to waive him a little surprising. If he clears -- which is by no means guaranteed -- the 30-year-old figures to be reassigned to the minors. He last played in the AHL during the 2009-10 campaign, although he could decide to ask for his outright release rather than reporting to Rockford.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Activated from IR
The Blackhawks activated Franson (upper body) from injured reserve Friday.
Franson was cleared to play on Dec. 20, but he's remained on IR up until now because Chicago simply hasn't needed him with Jordan Oesterle stepping up and playing well on the right side in his absence. However, the Blackhawks placed Artem Anisimov (upper body) on IR on Friday, which opened up a spot on their roster for the 2005 third-round pick. Franson's next opportunity to crack Chicago's lineup will come Friday against the Oilers.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Out for precautionary reasons
Franson (upper body) will not be in Thursday's lineup against the Stars despite being cleared for action, Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
With Jordan Oesterle excelling on the Hawks' blue line in Franson's absence, head coach Joel Quenneville decided to give the veteran some additional time to get back to speed before returning to game action. Now healthy, Franson will become another member of Chicago's defensive stable that's competing for minutes again. Both Franson and Oesterle are capable of playing on the right side and contributing on the power play, so they'll likely be in direct competition with one another for a spot in the lineup.

Franson agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Chicago on Wednesday.
Franson earned his way into this contract while on a professional tryout agreement during training camp. The towering blueliner logged 68 games for the Sabres last season in which he averaged 18:29 of ice time and compiled three goals, 16 assists and 87 hits. The 30-year-old will likely have to stave off Michal Rozsival (concussion) for ice time throughout the season, but should at least factor into coach Joel Quenneville's game-day roster decisions.

The 30-year-old rearguard has failed to crack the 20-point mark in each of the last two seasons, so he doesn't present the offensive upside necessary to be a desirable fantasy asset at this stage in his career.

Sabres' Cody Franson: Not protected in Vegas draft
Franson has been exposed to the Vegas expansion draft, theScore reports.
The soon-to-be 30-year-old has failed to turn many heads in his first two seasons in Buffalo, posting totals of 17 and 19 points. Franson does, however, have four seasons of between 29 and 36 points under his belt (Nashville and Toronto), so it's conceivable that he could get back to the 30-plus point plateau -- which is no small feat for a defenseman -- in the right situation. It's also worth noting that he'll be an unrestricted free agent come July, so if Vegas wishes to select him in the expansion draft on June 21, it'll get three days of exclusive negotiating rights to try to bang out a deal before his UFA status kicks in.

Franson has finally returned to full health after missing each of the last six contests due to the upper-body issue. The blueliner does present some appeal in daily formats, but doesn't produce enough to be worthy of ownership in the vast majority of season-long formats. He should slot back into the pairings Monday, though it's unclear who will come out in his place at this point.

Franson returned to practice Thursday, but will miss at least one more contest due to the upper-body issue. The blueliner provides a bit of offense for the club (19 points in 65 games), but not enough to be worthy of fantasy ownership in the vast majority of leagues. His next chance to rejoin the action comes Monday, but the team should update his status again when he's healthy and ready to play.
