Rodrigo Blankenship: Cut by Bucs
The Buccaneers waived Blankenship on Monday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Blankenship was competing with Chase McLaughlin for the Buccaneers' kicking gig and ultimately came up short in the job battle. The 26-year-old most recently suited up for the Cardinals, with whom he appeared in two games during the 2022 campaign after being cut by the Colts following Week 1.... See More ... See Less
Buccaneers' Rodrigo Blankenship: Drills only kick Friday
Blakenship converted his lone field-goal attempt -- from 35 yards out -- in the Buccaneers' 27-17 preseason loss to the Steelers on Friday. He did not have any extra-point tries.
Blankenship was true on his one boot and his competition for the placekicker job, Chase McLaughlin, handled both of Tampa Bay's point-after tries successfully. Consequently, the battle between the two kickers seemingly remains deadlocked heading into another week of training camp practices ahead of next Saturday's road preseason matchup against the Jets.... Buccaneers' Rodrigo Blankenship: Pushing McLaughlin in job battle
Blankenship and his competitor for the Buccaneers' placekicking job, Chase McLaughlin, have been running very close in their training camp competition heading into Friday's preseason opener against the Steelers, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.
Blankenship has 56 career regular-season field-goal attempts on his resume and has been displaying impressive leg strength during training camp, so he's believed to be just as viable a candidate as the player who actually replaced him in Indianapolis a year ago, McLaughlin. The job battle between the two young veterans could well extend all the way through the third preseason game, and Smith reports that Wednesday's dead-even kicking derby in practice -- which saw both players go a perfect 4-for-4 on attempts of varying distances -- was a microcosm of the dead heat the job battle has been heading into Friday night's exhibition opener.... Buccaneers' Rodrigo Blankenship: Set to sign with Tampa Bay
Blankenship is slated to sign with the Buccaneers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Blankenship had a tryout with Tampa Bay earlier in the week, which evidently went well and earned him a deal. He'll now compete with Chase McLaughlin to earn kicking duties with the Buccaneers for this season. Interestingly, McLaughlin took over at kicker for the Colts last season upon Blankenship being waived. Ultimately, the latter ended up with an opportunity in Arizona where he made two appearances and made both of his field-goal attempts and two of three extra-point tries before being waived with an undisclosed injury. The injury seemingly ended up being a torn muscle in his leg, which was repaired via surgery in January.... See More ... See Less
Rodrigo Blankenship: Working out for Tampa Bay
Blankenship (undisclosed) is with the Buccaneers for a minicamp tryout this week, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Blankenship had surgery in January to repair a torn muscle in his leg but now appears ready to go ahead of the 2023 campaign. The kicker was waived by the Colts in September and appeared in three total games with Indianapolis and Arizona in 2022, going 4-for-5 on field-goal attempts and 4-for-5 on PATs.... See More ... Rodrigo Blankenship: Waived with injury settlement
Arizona waived Blankenship (undisclosed) with an injury settlement Wednesday.
Blankenship filled in for Matt Prater during Week 7 and made both of his field-goal attempts, including a 50-yarder, but he missed one of his three extra-point tries. Prater returned in Week 8 but wasn't cleared for kickoff duties, so Blankenship handled that role. However, Blankenship appears to have suffered an injury of his own during the contest and was waived with an injury settlement Wednesday. Once healthy, Blankenship will be allowed to sign with a new team.... See More ... See Less
Cardinals' Rodrigo Blankenship: Contained to kickoffs in Week 8
Blankenship recorded six kickoffs, all touchbacks, during Sunday's 34-26 loss in Minnesota.
Blankenship filled in for the Cardinals' regular kicker Matt Prater in the final of his three absences due to a right hip injury. While Prater was cleared to log field-goal attempts and point-after tries Sunday -- he made two FGAs and PATs apiece in his return -- Blankenship, who was inked to the active roster last Wednesday, handled kickoff duties Week 8. Such a breakdown of placekicking tasks may be the team's reality until Prater is back to full health.... See More ... See Less
Cardinals' Rodrigo Blankenship: Active, along with Prater
Both Blankenship and Matt Prater (right hip) are active Sunday in Minnesota, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
With Prater back for the first time since Week 4, he's a safe bet to log field-goal attempts and point-after tries, at the very least. But Arizona signed Blankenship to the active roster this week to serve as an emergency option at placekicker for the Cardinals, and coach Kliff Kingsbury said he'd handle kickoffs while Prater gets the scoring opportunities. As a result, Blankenship isn't a certainty to contribute on the fantasy front.... See More ... See Less
Cardinals' Rodrigo Blankenship: Moves to Cardinals' active roster
Arizona signed Blankenship to the active roster from the practice squad Wednesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
Blankenship made two field goals in his debut for the Cardinals last week, with one coming from 50 yards out, and he went 2-for-3 on extra-point tries. His move to the active roster could signal that Matt Prater (hip) is trending in the wrong direction for Sunday's game against the Vikings.... See More ... See Less
Rodrigo Blankenship: Reverts to practice squad
Blankenship reverted back to Arizona's practice squad Friday.
Blankenship was elevated to the active roster prior to Thursday's win over the Saints, and he connected on both his field-goal attempts while going 2-for-3 on extra-point tries. However, his status with the Cardinals is dependent on the status of Matt Prater, who has missed three straight games due to a hip injury. Prater could return to the field as soon as next Sunday versus Minnesota.... See More ... See Less
Cardinals' Rodrigo Blankenship: Subbing for Prater on Thursday
Blankenship will serve as the Cardinals' placekicker Thursday versus the Saints with Matt Prater (hip) sidelined, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
With Prater out for a third consecutive contest, Blankenship will be the second kicker to stand in for him after Matt Ammendola handled those duties Weeks 5-6. In parts of three seasons with the Colts, Blankenship made 45 of 53 field-goal attempts and 52 of 55 point-after tries, which amounted to 8.5 points per game in his 22 appearances.... See More ... Cardinals' Rodrigo Blankenship: Joins 53-man roster Thursday
The Cardinals elevated Blankenship from their practice squad Thursday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
Blankenship was signed to Arizona's practice squad Tuesday, and he could serve as the team's top kicker for Thursday night's matchup against the Saints if Matt Prater (hip) -- who's currently questionable to play -- is eventually ruled inactive for a third consecutive contest. The 25-year-old was let go by Indianapolis after going 2-for-3 on field-goal attempts and 2-for-2 on extra-point tries in Week 1.... See More ... See Less
Rodrigo Blankenship: Signs to practice squad
Blankenship signed with the Cardinals' practice squad Tuesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
Blankenship had a rocky season debut with the Colts in Week 1, missing a potential game-winning kick in overtime, while also sending two kickoffs out of bounds for penalties, which lead to him getting cut. However, with Matt Ammendola being let go Monday by the Cardinals and Matt Prater (hip) still questionable for Thursday's content with the Saints, Blankenship could get a chance at redemption....
