While Jake Locker battles Matt Hasselbeck for the Tennessee Titans' starting quarterback position over the next several weeks, the second-year veteran may receive less sleep than usual.
Locker and his wife Lauren became parents on July 17 with the birth of their first daughter, Colbie Jo.
“We figured our first baby in the south, we'd give her a proper southern name,” Locker joked.
Locker doesn't anticipate that his responsibilities as a parent will cause him to lose focus when he gets on the field. The quarterback battle is arguably receiving the most attention of any position battle throughout the league.
“I don't believe it'll be a distraction at all,” Locker said. “If anything it'll be more motivation for me to go out and be successful.”
Third-string quarterback Rusty Smith and his wife Nicole are also expected to become parents in 2012. Smith's wife is due to give birth in the next several months.
More mobile Hasselbeck comfortable throwing on the run
Matt Hasselbeck appeared noticeably lighter as he reported to Titans' training camp. Hasselbeck indicated that he weighed in at approximately 237 pounds, which is close to his weight during the 2011 season.
“I'm at the lower end of my reporting weight,” Hasselbeck said. “They gave me a range to come in at – I think it was 237-242. The weight is tricky because I've been at 233 and have been fat and skinny. You can be both.”
Hasselbeck has completed passes to TE Brandon Barden, WR Damian Williams and WR Michael Preston off bootlegs over the first two days of practice. He also overthrew WR Marc Mariani on the left sidelines off a play-action pass in an 11-on-11 drill on Sunday night.
“The perception of Matt cause he's not the fastest, is that he's not mobile,” Locker said. “I think he's really good with those naked (bootlegs). He throws really good on the run, does a good job with it and I think he can be very successful at it.”
Britt continues rehab during practice
While Kenny Britt's teammates have been running through drills outside, the fourth-year wide receiver has been inside the Titans' facility working out with team trainers. Britt resumed jogging on a treadmill early last week.
“There's nothing he can really do out here,” coach Mike Munchak said. “You don't want him standing around. When I did that as a player I felt my knees were worse than they were when I came out.”
Britt may be itching to return to practice after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee last month.
“He's working harder than they are, believe me he'd rather be on the field,” Munchak said. “That's a tough workout with those guys.”
