The Oakland Raiders signed defensive end Andre Carter on Wednesday afternoon.
Carter was the seventh pick in the 2001 draft and has played for the 49ers, Redskins and Patriots. Last season, he tied the New England franchise record with four sacks in a game and was selected to the Pro Bowl.
His 2011 season ended early after he tore his left quadriceps tendon in a game on Dec. 18. Carter told the San Francisco Chronicle that he’s 100 percent and hopes to play on Sunday against the Broncos.
Carter worked out for the Raiders during training camp but wasn’t offered a contract at the time. After three weeks, Oakland is tied for second-to-last in the NFL with three quarterback sacks. Carter has recorded at least 10 sacks in a season four times in his career.
Oakland cut offensive tackle Joe Barksdale to make room on the roster.
