  • Rockets' Willie Cauley-Stein: Signs with Rockets

Cauley-Stein has signed a contract with the Rockets, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports. Cauley-Stein will be on the Rockets' active roster for their regular-season finale, although head coach Stephen Silas implied that he might not actually see the floor Sunday. The veteran big man is not a great target in most leagues.

  • Willie Cauley-Stein: Unimpressive across Game 2

Cauley-Stein logged four points (2-6 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 0-1 FT), seven rebounds, three assists and two steals across 29 minutes across during the Vipers' 114-110 loss to Delaware on Thursday. Despite sitting out Game 1 of the 2023 G League Finals for personal reasons, Cauley-Stein was able to both participate in and be a starter for Game 2. Unfortunately for him, he was the Vipers' least impressive starter as they went on to suffer a 2-0 series sweep.

Cauley-Stein did not play during Tuesday's 134-120 loss to Delaware because of personal reasons. Personal reasons prevented Cauley-Stein from participating in Game 1 of the 2023 G League Finals. Currently, his next opportunity to play against Delaware is Thursday night.

  • Willie Cauley-Stein: Won't be retained by Houston

The Rockets won't offer Cauley-Stein a second 10-day contract after his initial deal expired Wednesday, Mark Berman of Fox 26 Houston reports. Cauley-Stein didn't make any NBA appearances during his 10-day contract and will likely rejoin the Rockets' G League affiliate in Rio Grande Valley unless another NBA team swoops in and signs him. He previously appeared in 20 games (two starts) between the Mavericks and 76ers during the 2021-22 season, averaging 1.7 points and 2.0 rebounds in 9.2 minutes.

  • Rockets' Willie Cauley-Stein: Joining Rockets on 10-day deal

Cauley-Stein agreed Monday with the Rockets on a 10-day deal, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. After being cut by Houston in training camp, Cauley-Stein has spent the season playing for the club's G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Over 10 appearances for Rio Grande Valley, the seven-foot center has averaged 9.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.2 steals in 28.3 minutes. The Rockets have been getting destroyed defensively all season, and while the addition of Cauley-Stein won't solve that problem, he could at least prove to be a superior backup option at center than Usman Garuba or Frank Kaminsky.

  • Willie Cauley-Stein: Eight rebounds during start

Cauley-Stein logged five points (2-3 FG, 1-1 FT), eight rebounds, four assists and one steal across 27 minutes during the Vipers' 132-105 win at Birmingham on Tuesday. Cauley-Stein recorded a decent log as he was in the Vipers' starting lineup as a temporary replacement for Ray Spalding, who was left out to rest Tuesday. However, when the Vipers play their next two games, a back-to-back set Friday and Saturday, Spalding is expected to be starting in place of Cauley-Stein again.

  • Willie Cauley-Stein: DNP because of illness

Cauley-Stein was out ill during the Valley Vipers' win Tuesday against Delaware. A physical illness prevented Cauley-Stein from participating in the Valley Vipers' latest game. Fortunately for the center, the illness was non-COVID, and it should not require him to sit out many games.

  • Willie Cauley-Stein: Nears double-double

Cauley-Stein totaled 10 points (3-3 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 2-3 FT), nine rebounds, two assists and two steals over 27 minutes Wednesday versus Austin. Cauley-Stein has finished with double digits in two of the last three games. However, he's only reached the threshold three times in 11 games thus far, so he's not exactly an offensive juggernaut.

  • Willie Cauley-Stein: Tallies seven in return

Cauley-Stein (foot) totaled seven points (2-3 FG, 2-2 FT), seven rebounds, two blocks and an assist in Friday's 112-104 win over the Squadron. Cauley-Stein missed the Vipers' opener with a foot issue but did his part in limited action in his return to the floor. Cauley-Stein has never been a huge offensive factor and was the only starter for the Vipers to fail to reach double digits, but he remains a capable defender, posting a pair of blocks.

  • Willie Cauley-Stein: Sits with left foot stiffness

Cauley-Stein didn't play in Sunday's game versus Mexico City due to left foot stiffness. Cauley-Stein figures to have a chance to join the NBA ranks at some point during the season after missing out on a roster spot with the Rockets following training camp. However, he'll need to get healthy and log some action in the G League before that can become a reality.

  • Rockets' Willie Cauley-Stein: Let go by Houston

The Rockets waived Cauley-Stein on Saturday, NBA writer Marc Stein reports. Cauley-Stein did not play in Friday's preseason finale before being waived. The veteran big man averaged 1.7 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.5 assists in 9.2 minutes across 20 games between the Mavericks and 76ers last season. Cauley-Stein will look to join his sixth team in the last four seasons, as he didn't fit the direction of a rebuilding Rockets team.

  • Rockets' Willie Cauley-Stein: Sitting Friday

Cauley-Stein (undisclosed) won't play in Friday's preseason game against the Mavericks, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports. The Rockets haven't given an indication that Cauley-Stein is dealing with an injury, so it's possible that he's just resting for the team's final exhibition game. It wouldn't be surprising to see him available for Wednesday's regular-season opener in Atlanta.

Cauley-Stein is expected to be released by the 76ers on Thursday, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports. • 76ers' Willie Cauley-Stein: Joins Philly on 10-day deal

Cauley-Stein signed a 10-day contract with the 76ers on Tuesday, Rich Hofmann of The Athletic reports. Cauley-Stein was waived by the Mavericks in mid-January after being away from the team for over a month due to personal reasons. The seven-footer is the only true center on the roster behind Joel Embiid, so he may see a solid role off the bench. However, he hasn't seen game action since Nov. 27 and has only played double-digit minutes 10 times this season, so it's unlikely he'll be fantasy relevant during his stint in Philadelphia.

  • Mavericks' Willie Cauley-Stein: Waived by Mavs

Cauley-Stein (personal) was waived by the Mavericks on Saturday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. The Mavs added Marquese Chriss on a two-year deal in a subsequent move.

  • Mavericks' Willie Cauley-Stein: Still out Friday

Cauley-Stein (personal) remains out for Friday's game against the Grizzlies. Dallas has yet to provide any indication when Cauley-Stein might rejoin the team after he first went on personal leave in early December. Because of the time he's already missed, Cauley-Stein will likely need at least a few practices to get reconditioned whenever he eventually rejoins the Mavericks. Cauley-Stein played with the top unit in his final two appearances prior to leaving the team, but the starting center job belongs to Dwight Powell now, and that will likely remain the case even once Caluey-Stein is back in the mix.

At this point, it's not clear when he may return, as the Mavericks have provided no updates on his status and continue to rule him out on a game-to-game basis.
