Braves' Darius Vines: Optioned after Sunday's start
Vines (0-1) was the pitcher of record in Sunday's 6-4 loss to the Rangers, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out two over five innings. He was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett following the game, according to David O'Brien of The Athletic.
Making his second start for Atlanta, Vines cruised through the first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth. Evan Carter led off the frame with a solo shot to right center before Andrew Knizner put the Rangers in front with a three-run blast. Outside of the fourth inning, Vines held his own against a dangerous lineup, but he'll head back to Gwinnett nonetheless to gain further seasoning. Atlanta will call up Bryce Elder from Gwinnett to take replace Vines on the 26-man active roster ahead of Monday's series opener versus the Marlins.

Braves' Darius Vines: Nabs second start
Vines is slated to start Sunday's game against the Rangers at Truist Park, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
As expected, Vines will wind up getting at least one more turn through the rotation while filling in for Spencer Strider (elbow), who underwent season-ending surgery last week. In his 2024 MLB debut Monday, Vines was dealt a no-decision in Atlanta's 6-1 win over Houston after striking out four over 4.2 innings while allowing one run on four hits and three walks. He was lifted after 80 pitches Monday, but he could have that workload restriction loosened a bit if he's more efficient this weekend in a matchup with the reigning World Series champions. Even though Strider is out of the picture for 2024, Atlanta has plenty of appealing young arms in the upper levels of the minors, so Vines will need to continue to pitch well in his subsequent starts to ensure he sticks in the rotation on a more permanent basis.

Braves' Darius Vines: Solid in short outing
Vines allowed one run on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings in a no-decision Monday. He struck out four in the win over Houston.
Vines was tagged with a run in the first inning but was able to settle in and put together a decent performance. He threw 46 of 80 pitches for strikes, including nine whiffs. It was Vines' first MLB appearance since Sep. 27 of last season. The 25-year-old likely pitched well enough to earn another turn in the rotation, but Atlanta's long-term plan to replace Spencer Strider (elbow) remains unclear for now.

The 25-year-old was called up by Atlanta on Friday but wasn't needed out of the bullpen in Miami this weekend, so he's now in line to fill the rotation spot that was opened when Spencer Strider (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list. Vines posted a 3.98 ERA over 20.1 frames in his first taste of the majors last season, and he got off to a solid start at Triple-A Gwinnett in 2024 with a 3.75 ERA and 11:3 K:BB in two outings.

The right-hander made his last start for Gwinnett on April 4 and should immediately be available out of the bullpen for Atlanta. However, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, Vines could be an option to start Tuesday against the Astros, depending on his usage over the next few days. Though the young right-hander cruised to a win while striking out five over six innings of two-run ball in his big-league debut this past Wednesday in Colorado, he was sent back to Gwinnett to make room on the roster for a fresh relief arm in right-hander Ben Heller, who was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move. Per Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta is likely to call up either of Michael Soroka or Dylan Dodd from Triple-A when the team breaks a new No. 5 starter into the rotation Tuesday versus the Cardinals. Vines will head back to the minors for now but should be an option to rejoin the big club later in September, either as a multi-inning reliever or starter.

Braves' Darius Vines: Wins big-league debut in Colorado
Vines (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five over six innings to earn the win in Wednesday's 7-3 victory over the Rockies.
Making his major-league debut at Coors Field, Vines had few issues with the Rockies' lineup. The runs against him came on an Ezequiel Tovar single and a Hunter Goodman sacrifice fly. Vines had a 2.86 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB over 28.1 innings with Triple-A Gwinnett after recovering from a shoulder injury, so his success isn't all that surprising. The rookie right-hander could have a chance to stick in Atlanta's rotation beyond Wednesday. If he does, he could pitch at home versus the Cardinals next week, though Atlanta may use Monday's off day to push him to the back a few days instead.

Vines could end up making additional starts until Kyle Wright (shoulder) is ready to return from the 60-day injured list.

Vines (shoulder) was reinstated from Triple-A Gwinnett's 7-day injured list Thursday and struck out four while allowing one earned run on five hits and four walks over 4.2 innings in his return to the rotation.
Thursday's appearance marked Vines' season debut for Gwinnett after he was placed on the IL coming out of spring training on account of an inflamed right shoulder. He was cleared to begin a rehab assignment in late June and turned in a 2.40 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 21:3 K:BB in 15 innings over his four starts between the rookie-level Florida Complex League and High-A Rome before he slotted back into the Gwinnett rotation. The 25-year-old right-hander is one of Atlanta's top pitching prospects and already has a spot on the 40-man roster, so a late-season promotion to the majors isn't out of the question if he excels in his next few outings at Triple-A and if the big club has a need for another impact arm.

The outing with Rome was the third of Vines' rehab assignment, which he kicked off June 30 in the rookie-level Florida Complex League. Vines is on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Gwinnett with an undisclosed injury.
Given that Vines has had success in the upper levels and is on the 40-man roster, it seemed odd that he never factored into this spring's rotation competition in camp, so an injury makes sense. He has an excellent changeup that allows his low-90s fastball and average slider to play up. Vines should be considered out indefinitely until we get word on the nature of his injury.
