  • Athletics' Mason Miller: Fans side for fifth save

Miller tossed a clean ninth inning, striking out all three batters he faced to pick up his fifth save during Monday's 2-0 win over the Yankees.

Miller needed just 14 pitches to strike out the side and finish off the listless Yankees. The game was scoreless through eight, but a Zack Gelof two-run homer gave the A's the lead in the top of the ninth, allowing Miller the opportunity to close out his fifth save. All five saves have come in Miller's last five appearances as he's put a stranglehold on the ninth-inning role for Oakland. The effort dropped his ERA to 1.80 and his WHIP to 1.00 while lifting his strikeout rate to 18.0 K/9.

  • Athletics' Mason Miller: Notches fourth save

Miller pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Cardinals to record his fourth save Wednesday, striking out two and walking one while not allowing any hits.

Miller entered the contest with a three-run lead in the top of the ninth and proceeded to walk the leadoff man before getting two of the next three batters to go down on strikes, both swinging. The right-hander needed only nine pitches to retire the final three batters and record his fourth save in as many chances. Miller has not allowed a hit over his last four appearances, posting a 9:1 K:BB over that stretch.

  • Athletics' Mason Miller: Fans side to earn third save

Miller struck out all three batters he faced as he tossed a perfect ninth inning to pick up his third save Sunday against the Nationals.

Miller needed just 13 pitches to strike out the Nationals in order and preserve the victory for Oakland. Miller has converted all three of his save opportunities, with each of those occurring over his last three outings. During that stretch, he's allowed zero baserunners and has struck out seven of the nine batters he has faced.

  • Athletics' Mason Miller: Registers second save

Miller earned a save against the Rangers on Thursday, striking out two batters in a perfect inning of work.

Miller was tasked with protecting a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, and he did so impressively, throwing 13 of 16 pitches for strikes and punching out two of the three batters he faced. The strikeouts were against two of Texas' top hitters -- Marcus Semien and Corey Seager -- giving added emphasis to how well Miller pitched under pressure. The right-hander has registered a save in each of his past two appearances and hasn't allowed a run since his first outing of the campaign. He's posted 12 punchouts to just three walks over seven frames and certainly looks like Oakland's top option for closing duties.

  • Athletics' Mason Miller: Locks down first career save

Miller tossed a perfect ninth inning Tuesday in a 4-3 win over the Rangers to earn his first career save. He struck out two.

Miller entered protecting a 4-3 lead after Shea Langeliers put the A's in front with a go-ahead homer in the top of the frame. Miller was in nearly untouchable, getting a routine groundout before striking out back-to-back hitters to end the game. Miller has the lights-out stuff to become one of the best closers in baseball if he sticks in the role. He touched triple digits eight times out of his 16 pitches in Tuesday's appearance and has now fired five straight scoreless innings with a 9:2 K:BB.

  • Athletics' Mason Miller: Electric in two-inning appearance

Miller fired two scoreless relief innings in a win over the Tigers on Saturday, allowing two hits and recording three strikeouts.

Save chances continue to be few and far between in Oakland, so Miller is being afforded work in alternate situations. The flamethrowing right-hander had last seen action Tuesday, and his arm was particularly lively while throwing six pitches of at least 101 mph during Saturday's outing, per Martin Gallegos of MLB.com. Miller now has back-to-back two-inning appearances, but that should be the exception much more than the norm if and when there is an extended stretch of ninth-inning opportunities.

  • Athletics' Mason Miller: Falters in non-save situation

Miller worked the ninth inning of Saturday's 12-3 loss to the Guardians, allowing two earned runs on three hits and a walk over one inning. He struck out one.

The Athletics' closer didn't come close to sniffing a save situation in the first two games, so manager Mark Kotsay opted to give him some work in the blowout defeat. Making his first appearance since an exhibition against the Giants on Monday, Miller got only 19 of his 30 pitches into the strike zone, but his status as the top ninth-inning option remains unchanged for the time being.
