Player Outlook
Eric Haase was the Tigers' Opening Day catcher last season, but he ended the campaign back in the minors in a different organization. After he popped a combined 36 homers from 2021-22, Haase's power vanished. The slugging had been his saving grace, as he's always had strikeout issues, and without that, Haase became a liability. Detroit designated him for assignment at the end of August, and after only a brief period of time with Cleveland, he was outrighted to Triple-A Columbus. It was an unceremonious end to a brutal season -- Haase's 42 wRC+ was the worst among all players with 250-plus plate appearances -- but nonetheless he managed to land a big-league deal with the Brewers in free agency. Now entering his age-31 season, Haase projects as Milwaukee's third catcher behind William Contreras and part-time DH Gary Sanchez.

  • Brewers' Eric Haase: DFA'd by Crew

The Brewers designated Haase for assignment Thursday. Haase turned a lot of heads during camp this spring, slashing .395/.465/.868 with five homers and 14 RBI across 43 plate appearances. However, the Brewers didn't want to carry a third catcher behind William Contreras and Gary Sanchez, so the team will instead attempt to pass Haase through waivers. The 31-year-old backstop only managed a .201 average and .528 OPS with the Tigers and Guardians last season, but other organizations may be willing to take a chance on him after his monster spring.

  • Brewers' Eric Haase: Unlikely to make roster

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Wednesday in an interview with 97.3 The Game Milwaukee that the team is leaning toward carrying two catchers, which would leave Haase without a roster spot. Haase has had a terrific spring, but he's a difficult fit on Milwaukee's roster with William Contreras and Gary Sanchez around. The Brewers could draw interest in Haase via trade, but otherwise Milwaukee could try to pass him through waivers and stash him at Triple-A Nashville.

  • Brewers' Eric Haase: Pushing for roster spot

Haase went 15-for-38 (.395) with five home runs, three doubles, 14 RBI, 11 runs and a 5:6 BB:K over 18 games this spring. Haase joined the Brewers over the offseason after splitting the 2023 campaign with the Tigers and Guardians, and he made just about as good of an impression as he could during the exhibition season. Fellow backstops William Contreras and Gary Sanchez are locked in, the Brewers would need to open the season with three catchers to get Haase onto the 26-man roster. However, given the way he hit this spring, they may opt to do just that.

  • Brewers' Eric Haase: Signs with Milwaukee

Haase agreed to a one-year contract with the Brewers on Wednesday. Haase was outrighted off Cleveland's 40-man roster in early December and elected free agency after the season, and he's now found a home for 2024. The 31-year-old also has two years of club control beyond the upcoming campaign. He struggled to a .201/.247/.281 slash line last year but had a .746 OPS across the prior two seasons. Haase should serve as Milwaukee's No. 2 catcher behind starter William Contreras.

  • Eric Haase: Elects free agency

Haase elected to become a free agent Tuesday. Haase tallied 36 home runs in 208 games for the Tigers between the 2021-2022 seasons, but the 30-year-old catcher and corner outfielder stumbled to a .201/.247/.281 batting line across 293 major-league plate appearances in 2023.

  • Guardians' Eric Haase: Outrighted to Triple-A

Haase cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday. Haase lost his spot on the Guardians' 40-man roster, but it appears he will stick around in the organization. The 30-year-old has managed just a .528 OPS with four home runs in 89 games between the Tigers and Guardians in 2023.

  • Guardians' Eric Haase: Jettisoned from 40-man roster

Haase was designated for assignment by the Guardians on Thursday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. The Guardians needed to clear a couple spots on their 40-man roster for their recent waiver claims, and Haase is one of the victims. Haase lasted barely over a week with Cleveland after being claimed off waivers from the Tigers.

  • Guardians' Eric Haase: Scooped up by Cleveland

The Guardians claimed Haase off waivers from the Tigers on Monday. After Detroit moved him off its 40-man roster last week, Haase will stick within the American League Central and begin his second stint in the Guardians organization after he was drafted by Cleveland in 2011 before being traded to the Tigers in 2020. Haase has no minor-league options remaining, so he'll join the 26-man active roster and will step in as the new No. 2 catcher behind Bo Naylor while Cam Gallagher (concussion) and David Fry (hamstring) are on the injured list. Prior to being cut by the Tigers, Haase slashed an abysmal .201/.246/.284 over 282 plate appearances on the season.

  • Tigers' Eric Haase: Dropped from 40-man roster

Haase was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Saturday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. With Haase being dropped from the 40-man roster, Detroit signed Carson Kelly to a major-league contract Saturday. Haase has struggled to a .201 average with 13 extra-base hits, 26 RBI, 22 runs and three stolen bases over 264 at-bats in 86 games with the Tigers this year. The catcher will now either get claimed by another team, report to Triple-A Toledo or be released outright.

  • Tigers' Eric Haase: Sitting out afternoon game

Haase is not in the lineup for the first game of Friday's doubleheader versus the Guardians. Jake Rogers will do the catching for Tarik Skubal in the afternoon contest. That makes it virtually guaranteed that Haase will be behind the plate for the nightcap with Matt Manning on the mound.

  • Tigers' Eric Haase: Retreats to bench Wednesday

Haase is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins. Haase had started in three of the last four games -- two at catcher and one in left field -- but he'll head to the bench Wednesday as Jake Rogers and Akil Baddoo step in at those respective positions. The Tigers still appear to view Haase primarily as a catcher, and Rogers should remain the team's preferred option behind the plate given Haase's season-long struggles. Among the 275 players in the majors with at least 250 plate appearances this season, Haase ranks 274th with a 44 wRC+.

  • Tigers' Eric Haase: Sitting out Thursday

Haase is not in the lineup for Thursday's tilt versus the Rangers, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Haase started 12 of the Tigers' first 13 games against left-handers this season but has since been in the lineup just twice the last five times they've faced southpaws. After putting up a .778 OPS versus lefties in 2022, he's managed just a .522 OPS so far against them in 2023. Jake Rogers will catch Thursday and Matt Vierling will play left field.

  • Tigers' Eric Haase: Takes seat Sunday

Haase is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Twins. Haase went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored Saturday, but he'll alternate at catcher with Jake Rogers, who slides into the lineup for the series finale. Haase can play in the outfield when he's not behind the plate, though he's started only once in the outfield this month.

  • Tigers' Eric Haase: Drives in three in win

Haase went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and three RBI in Wednesday's 9-4 win over the Royals. Haase came in batting just .154 in June with only one multi-hit game this month, so the production was somewhat unexpected. The 30-year-old remains in a timeshare behind the plate with Jake Rogers, which limits the fantasy ceiling of both players. Haase did pop 14 home runs last season and 22 long balls in 2021, however, so the Tigers will likely continue to give him plenty of at-bats as he tries to get going.

  • Tigers' Eric Haase: Starting Sunday

Haase is starting at catcher and batting ninth in Sunday's game against the Twins. After Jake Rogers got the start behind the plate Saturday, Haase will take over Sunday. Haase did appear as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning in the last contest. He's batting just .221 this season and only .188 in the month, making him a fairly uninspiring fantasy asset at the moment.

  • Tigers' Eric Haase: Not in Thursday's lineup

Haase is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game against the Twins. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch has been siding with Jake Rogers at catcher lately, as Haase has started just two of the last seven games (one of which came in a doubleheader). Haase homered Wednesday but is just 4-for-36 over his last 40 plate appearances.

  • Tigers' Eric Haase: Goes deep Wednesday

Haase went 3-for-6 with a solo home run and two RBI across both games of Wednesday's doubleheader against Atlanta. Haase started the first game and went 3-for-5 with his third home run of the season. He hit the bench for the second game, though he did appear as a pinch hitter. Haase continues to split time behind the plate with Jake Rogers and has limited fantasy appeal so long as he remains in a timeshare, though he can also play in the outfield on days when he doesn't catch.

  • Tigers' Eric Haase: Returns to lineup

Haase is starting at catcher and batting sixth in Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. Haase sat out the first two games of the series in favor of Jake Rogers but will return to the lineup Sunday. Neither player has been a consistent offensive performer, as Haase has just a .566 OPS, while Rogers is a bit better at .692 though he's batting only .167. Haase may be unable to separate himself from Rogers any time soon behind the plate, though he can also pick up some starts in the outfield, which gives a slight boost to his overall outlook.

  • Tigers' Eric Haase: Sitting Friday

Haase isn't starting Friday against the Diamondbacks. Haase's slump at the plate has begun to cost him significant playing time, as he's been phased out of the picture in left field and DH while splitting starts behind the plate with Jake Rogers. Rogers will start Friday and bat eighth.

  • Tigers' Eric Haase: Out of lineup Tuesday

Haase is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Phillies. Haase went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Monday's series opener at Philadelphia and holds a brutal .219/.283/.298 batting line on the year. Jake Rogers will catch and bat eighth for the Tigers on Tuesday night.
