It was immediately clear that Rodriguez didn't have his best stuff going Friday. He issued three free passes in the first inning and needed 40 pitches to collect his first three outs, though he managed to do so without giving up a run. The runs would come later, courtesy of a solo homer from Noelvi Marte in the second and an RBI single from Eugenio Suarez in the third. The D-backs made the call to take Rodriguez out of the game once he had reached 85 pitches midway through the third inning, marking the southpaw's shortest start of the season. He'll carry a 2.55 ERA and 1.23 WHIP into his next outing, which figures to be a relatively favorable matchup at home against the Angels.

Rodriguez has quality starts in four of his five outings in May, and he's earned three wins this month. He's allowed just six runs over 33.2 innings in that span, a strong rebound after some struggles in the latter half of April. The southpaw is enjoying an impressive bounce-back campaign after two years of struggles, pitching to a 2.31 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 49:25 K:BB through 66.1 innings over 11 starts. The walk rate (3.4 BB/9) is in line with his career norms, but a career-low BABIP (.259) has allowed him to find more success than usual. Rodriguez's next start is projected to be a tough one at home versus the Dodgers early next week.

The veteran southpaw's 11:5 K:BB is far less impressive, but as long as he continues to limit runs, fantasy managers will be happy to roll him out every fifth game. Rodriguez faced a loaded Dodgers lineup and didn't back down, getting through five frames without being scored upon. He faced one batter in the sixth and was let down by his defense, as Kyle Tucker reached on a fielding error and later came around to score following Rodriguez's exit. Though the veteran hurler wasn't able to secure the win, this was nonetheless a very promising 2026 debut on the heels of a strong finish to the 2025 campaign, when he posted a 4-1 record with a 2.80 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over his final six starts. It's far too early to tab Rodriguez as having a career resurgence, but after he registered an ERA north of 5.00 both of the past two campaigns, fantasy managers who remember his strong 2023 regular season (3.30 ERA, 1.15 WHIP over 26 starts) may want to keep an eye on his next few outings.
