A rare River River Showdown takes place on Saturday when the rival Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners collide at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The 2022 River River Showdown is the first since 1998 featuring two unranked teams. This year the Longhorns (3-2, 1-1 in Big 12) enter the game off one of their best performances of the season, a never-in-doubt 38-20 victory over West Virginia. Meanwhile the Sooners (3-2, 0-2), who have lost to Kansas State and TCU the last two weeks, are looking to avoid their first three-game losing streak since the 1998 season.

Kickoff is noon ET. The Longhorns are 8.5-point favorites in the latest Texas vs. Oklahoma odds from Caesars Sportsbook, while the over/under for total points scored is 64.5. Before making any Oklahoma vs. Texas picks, you need to see the college football predictions and betting advice from SportsLine's advanced computer model.

Why Texas can cover

Texas has a favorable matchup with its running game facing Oklahoma's run defense. Junior Bijan Robinson, a leading candidate for the Doak Walker Award that goes to the nation's best running back, is averaging 103.0 rushing yards per game, which ranks second in the Big 12. He and his fellow backs face a Sooners defense that ranks last in the Big 12 and 119th in the country in rushing yards allowed per game (198.2).

In addition, sophomore quarterback Hudson Card is coming off his best career game at Texas. In last week's victory against West Virginia, Card set career highs in both passing yards (303) and passing touchdowns (three). Though there are reports out of Austin that there is growing optimism around the program that five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers (clavicle) will be available to return on Saturday, Card has shown he is capable of moving the offense, so Texas is in a far better spot at quarterback than Oklahoma. The Sooners could be without starter Dillon Gabriel (head) and don't have a proven option behind him.

Why Oklahoma can cover

Oklahoma has owned the series against Texas recently. The Sooners have won four straight against the Longhorns, 10 of the last 13 and 16 of the last 23. The average score over the last four games has been 45-37.

In addition, Oklahoma faces a Texas team that has not proven it can close out wins against good teams in the second half of games. Since Steve Sarkisian took over as coach prior to the 2021 season, the Longhorns have lost six games in which they led in the fourth quarter or overtime. One of those losses came in last season's game against the Sooners in which Texas led 28-7 at the end of the first quarter and 38-20 at halftime.
