College football scores, rankings, highlights: Texas, Notre Dame, Florida State cruise in Week 9 routs

Week 9 of the college football season brought more clarity as teams made their final statements before the release of the first College Football Playoff Rankings on Oct. 31. No. 7 Texas and No. 14 Notre Dame were among those who handled business convincingly, both winning at home by at least four scores. No. 1 Georgia. No. 4 Florida State, No. 8 Oregon and even No. 18 Louisville also put the selection committee on notice with impressive victories, but not everyone was smiling. Things didn't come easy at times for No. 10 Penn State, No. 5 Washington or even No. 3 Ohio State in wins against unranked opponents, and No. 6 Oklahoma's loss at Kansas was a disruptive outcome in the CFP race. The Sooners were the last remaining undefeated team in the Big 12, so their defeat eliminated the potential for five undefeated Power Five champions at the season's end.

CBS Sports was there every step of the way to update you with the latest scores, highlights and storylines throughout the evening, which can be seen below.

Georgia Tech stays wild

Final: Georgia Tech 46, North Carolina 42

Try and figure this Georgia Tech team out; the Yellow Jackets lost 38-27 at home to Bowling Green on Sept. 30, then turned turned around won at Miami when the Hurricanes were No. 17, only to follow that seemingly monumental victory with a home loss to Boston College. Yet, here they are at home Saturday night winning a barnburner against North Carolina behind 635 yards, including 348 on the ground. This is three straight wins in the series for Georgia Tech, and students are rushing the field in Atlanta.

What will the CFP committee do with Washington?

Final: Washington 42, Stanford 33

The first CFP rankings drop next week, and it's going to be interesting to see where Washington falls after struggling these past two weeks. Nothing is coming easy for coach Kalen DeBoer's squad as of late. After narrowly surviving against upset-minded Arizona State last week, the Huskies got a scare from Stanford on Saturday. The Cardinal racked up 499 total yards on UW. But any chance of an upset win ended when Stanford, trailing 35-33 with 3:20 to play, turned the ball over on downs. Not long after Washington took possession of the ball, Huskies running back Dillon Johnson recorded a 13-yard touchdown, putting the game out of reach.

Kyle McCord struggles, but Ohio State survives

Final: Ohio State 24, Wisconsin 10

Marvin Harrison Jr. reeled in two touchdown receptions and helped Ohio State beat a plucky Wisconsin team 24-10 on the road. Buckeyes quarterback Kyle McCord turned the football over three times and was hobbled in the second half but did what was needed to keep Ohio State unbeaten and firmly in College Football Playoff hunt. TreVeyon Henderson also ran for 162 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries in his first game back from injury. Wisconsin mustered just 259 total yards while playing with redshirt freshman quarterback Braedyn Locke, who was making his second career start in place of the injured Tanner Mordecai. The Buckeyes are a little dinged up, but their defense continues to demonstrate improvement with a game at Rutgers up next.

Rough night for Shedeur Sanders

Final: UCLA 28, Colorado 16

No. 23 UCLA recorded seven sacks and made life miserable for Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the 28-16 win over the Buffaloes Saturday. The loss puts a major roadblock into Colorado's chances of becoming bowl eligible for the first time since the 2016 season and it simultaneously keeps the Bruins alive for a potential backdoor berth into the Pac-12 title game. Sanders had one of his worst statistical performances of the season against one of the top defenses in the country. He finished the night 27 of 42 for 217 yards and his lone touchdown of the evening was a 18-yard strike to Jimmy Horn Jr. with 2:37 left. Colorado's offense was held to 255 yards, while allowing 487.

Ole Miss cruises

Final: No. 12 Ole Miss 33, Vanderbilt 7

The Rebels had no problem dispatching of the overmatched Commodores on Saturday night in Oxford, Mississippi. Sophomore running back Quinshon Judkins had 124 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, and added seven yards through the air on the evening. More importantly, though, was the fact that the Rebs defense was lights out for the third straight weekend. Vandy only amassed 229 yards -- 3.6 yards per play -- in a game that saw them fall into a 26-0 deficit.

Tennessee outlasts Kentucky in a close one

Final: No. 21 Tennessee 33, Kentucky 27

Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson took over in the fourth quarter as the Volunteers outlasted a Wildcat team that simply wouldn't go down without a fight. Sampson scored what wound up being the game-winner when he capped off a 12-play, 65-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown to make it 33-24 midway through the fourth quarter. It is a huge win for the Volunteers who, despite the two conference losses, are still in the mix for a berth in a New Year's Six bowl berth.

Washington not out of the woods yet

Early 4Q: No. 5 Washington 35, Stanford 26

It seems clear that Stanford won't be going down without a fight against the No. 5 team in the country. The Cardinal have come within two points of the Huskies on two occasions since halftime, though Washington just went back up two scores early in the fourth quarter after Penix completed his fourth touchdown pass of the evening. The Huskies signal-caller has another 300-yard passing performance under his belt as he looks to get his Heisman campaign back on track after last week's lackluster showing against Arizona State.

Tennessee and Kentucky in a tight one

END Q3: No. 21 Tennessee 26, Kentucky 24

The Volunteers and Wildcats are in a good one as the switch sides for the final time. Wildcat quarterback Devin Leary -- a transfer from NC State -- has had his best game this season as he has thrown for 266 yards and two touchdowns. The scoring strike to Dane Key late in the third quarter made it a two-point game. This is a critical game for bowl positioning in the SEC East. Both teams are essentially out of the division title race, but a New Year's Six bowl could be attainable -- especially for Tennessee.

Ole Miss cruising at the half

HALF: No. 12 Ole Miss 26, Vanderbilt 0

It's time to talk about the Ole Miss defense. Sure, Vanderbilt isn't exactly a tough opponent. But the Rebels have only given up 82 yards and 2.7 yards per play to the Commodores has they have taken a huge lead into the break. This makes it three straight weeks that they've been rock solid. If they can play defense at an adequate level, the Rebs could make a CFP run.

Washington leads, but Stanford lurking

Halftime: No. 5 Washington 21, Stanford 13

One week removed from a serious scare at home against one-win Arizona State, Washington finds itself up just a touchdown on the road against two-win Stanford. The Huskies were up 21-10 before the Cardinal drilled a field goal as time expired in the first half. However, it will be Washington that gets the ball to start the second half with a chance to pad its lead.

After failing to score an offensive touchdown against the Sun Devils, the Huskies already have three scores of such tonight after one half. Two of those touchdowns came on passes from quarterback and Heisman hopeful Michael Penix Jr., who first connected with Rome Odunze on a 7-yard pass before later finding Ja'Lynn Polk for a 92-yard score. That said, Penix hasn't exactly been dialed in tonight, only completing 8 of 16 pass attempts thus far.

Tennessee and Kentucky in a track meet

HALF: No. 21 Tennessee 23, Kentucky 17

The Volunteers and Wildcats are in a wild one in Lexington, Kentucky. Vols' quarterback Joe Milton III is 10 of 12 for 113 yards and a touchdown, and Jaylen Wright has 90 yards and a score on the ground as they jumped out to a 10-0 lead. However, the Wildcats roared back after Devin Leary threw a beautiful back shoulder fade to Barion Brown for an 11-yard score and running back Ray Davis punched it in from seven yards out to make this a ballgame.

USC survives at Cal

Final: No. 24 USC 50, Cal 49

The last scheduled meeting in a series of California foes dating back to 1915 ends up being a complete barnburner as the Trojans narrowly avoid what would have been a third consecutive loss after a 6-0 start to the season. USC trailed by two scores early in the fourth quarter before embarking on a 21-0 run to take a 50-43 lead. Cal then scored a touchdown with just 58 seconds left in regulation and unsuccessfully went for two points and the win rather than kicking a game-tying field goal, allowing for the Trojans to hang on for a one-point victory.

As the score suggests, both offenses flourished in this one. The two in-state foes combined for 1,024 yards of total offense and were a combined 12 of 13 when entering the red zone. On the other side of the football, it was another lackluster showing for USC's much-maligned defense, which surrendered 527 yards as the Bears nearly pulled off the upset.

Ole Miss running over Vandy

End Q1: No. 12 Ole Miss 10, Vanderbilt 0

Ole Miss running back Quinshon Judkins has 84 yards and a score through one quarter to play as the Rebels have dominated the Commodores from the outset. More importantly, though, is a defense that gave up just 26 yards in the first quarter. We have seen the Rebs get lit up by below average teams on a consistent basis. If this continues, the Rebels could find a way to slide into College Football Playoff contention.

Tennessee rolling early

End Q1: No. 21 Tennessee 10, Kentucky 0

The Volunteers came out hot on the road as running back Jaylen Wright ripped off a 52 yard touchdown run on their first drive of the game to start the scoring, Wright has quietly become one of the best running backs in the SEC in a backfield that includes veteran Jabari Small. The Volunteers kicked a field goal on their only other possession of the quarter to take a double-digit lead into the second frame.

Buffs, Bruins battle at the Rose Bowl

Rested up after a Week 8 bye, Deion Sanders and Colorado go on the road against No. 23 UCLA in what may be the last meeting between the Buffaloes and Bruins in some time as they head to other conferences in 2024. Colorado is in desperate search of some momentum after collapsing against Stanford two weeks ago in a double-overtime loss, surrendering a 29-0 halftime lead. The Buffs are now 4-3 overall and a mere 1-3 in Pac-12 play following a 3-0 start to the season, and a bowl game looks far from promised with three ranked opponents -- UCLA included -- still left on the schedule. There's urgency for the Burins too. A 2-2 record in Pac-12 play already puts the UCLA behind the 8-ball in reaching the Pac-12 Championship Game, and another conference loss would just about end any chance of the Bruins making it to Las Vegas.

Buckeyes visit Camp Randall

It's been a minute since we've seen Ohio State go on the road to face Wisconsin. The Big Ten foes have met four times -- twice in Columbus and twice in the conference title game -- since the Buckeyes' last visit to Camp Randall Stadium in 2016, a 30-23 overtime win for Ohio State. That victory continued a trend of Camp Randall Stadium being a tricky place to play for the Buckeyes, at least in recent decades. Going back to 2000, Ohio State is 5-2 against Wisconsin in Madison, and four of those five Buckeye victories were decided by a touchdown or less. Ohio State does enter this one fresh off the momentum of an AP Top-10 victory against Penn State in Week 8. Wisconsin, which lost quarterback Tanner Mordecai indefinitely with a broken hand earlier in October, edged out Illinois in a 25-21 road win.

Texas cruises past BYU

FINAL: No. 7 Texas 35, BYU 6

A week after surviving an upset scare at Houston, the Longhorns bounce back with a dominant home victory against BYU and improve to 7-1 on the season. Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy, starting in place of an injured Quinn Ewers, completed 16 of 25 pass attempts for 170 yards and 2 touchdowns in a win in which the Longhorns never trailed. The 29-point win signals the largest margin of victory for Texas in its series with BYU -- the Longhorns were previously 1-4 all-time against the Cougars, with only a one-point victory in 2011 to show. Texas now turns in attention to a Week 10 home contest against Kansas State that will be pivotal in the Big 12 race. The Longhorns and Wildcats both exit Week 9 tied atop the Big 12 standings, along with several others, at 4-1 in league play.

Louisville shuts out Duke

FINAL: No. 18 Louisville 23, No. 20 Duke 0

Louisville bounced back from its first loss of the season -- a stunner two weeks ago at Pitt -- in dominant fashion, shutting out Duke at home in an AP Top 25 matchup. Cardinals running back Jawhar Jordan returned from a hamstring injury by rushing for 163 yards and the only two touchdowns of the game, maintaining his presence as one of the ACC's top rushers. While Duke was able to start quarterback Riley Leonard despite injury concerns, he ended the game completing just 9 of 23 pass attempts for 121 yards with an interception, and rushed for just 13 yards on 10 carries. With the victory in hand, Louisville still has all of its season-end goals on the table as the Cardinals now sit 7-1 in their first year under coach Jeff Brohm.

Georgia keeps rolling

Final: No. 1 Georgia 43, Florida 20

Georgia improved to 8-0 with Saturday's dominant win against rival Florida. The Bulldogs secured their third-straight win and sixth victory in their last seven contests against the Gators. Georgia is the only undefeated team remaining in the SEC, and the only SEC East team without a conference loss thus far. The Bulldogs scored 36 unanswered points against Florida after going down 7-0 in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs also extended their winning streak to 25-straight games, the longest such streak in the nation by far. Kirby Smart's squad hasn't lost a regular season game since 2020 and they're well on their way to a third-straight appearance in both the SEC Championship and the College Football Playoff.

Notre Dame blows past Pitt

Final: No.  Notre Dame 58, Pittsburgh 7

No upset alert today. Though Pittsburgh was able to get one over against Louisville -- a team that beat Notre Dame -- a couple weeks ago, the Fighting Irish were prepared for Saturday's challenge. Notre Dame rode a strong defensive effort and an effective ground game to an easy win. The Irish forced five turnovers as Pitt starting quarterback Christian Veilleux threw four interceptions. The Panthers' only touchdown came midway through the fourth quarter, when UND had already emptied the bench on both sides of the ball.

Saturday was big for Notre Dame, as it showed it can win in multiple ways. Star QB Sam Hartman didn't have his best day, completing 18 of his 25 pass attempts for 288 yards with two interceptions. He wasn't directly responsible for a single score, though the ground game picked up the slack with four touchdowns.

Wake up call for Washington?

Everything on paper suggests that Washington should roll past Stanford, but the Huskies learned in Week 8 that nothing can be taken for granted after surviving an upset scare on home turf against a one-win Arizona State team. Washington got away with the victory despite its high-powered offense failing to score a touchdown -- the Huskies' lone trip to the end zone was a defensive score. Heisman-hopeful quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who was intercepted twice agains the Sun Devils, will look to get back on track on the road Saturday againast Cardinal team that is just 2-5 in its first season under coach Troy Taylor.

USC granted all-time weird field goal attempt

USC just attempted one of the weirdest field goals in college football history. The Trojans were trying to get points on the board, down 28-17, near the end of the second quarter. But Caleb Williams completed a pass to Lake McRee, in bounds, for a first down with one second left. At first, it looked as if time expired. Both teams left the field. However, according to the Pac-12 Network broadcast, USC coach Lincoln Riley challenged the ruling, claiming that he took a timeout before time expired. The official review extended deep into halftime, and it didn't reach a ruling until the bands had already started to perform.

Officials decided to play out the last second of the second quarter, giving USC a chance to kick, after halftime. The Trojans came out for the 33-yard attempt after a 30-minute break and Cal called a timeout. USC kicker Denis Lynch proceeded to miss the kick, officially bringing an end to the second quarter. Cal immediately got the ball off a kickoff to start the third quarter.

Georgia extends lead with blocked punt

Half: Georgia 26, Florida 7

Georgia is finding unique ways to score in Saturday's game against Florida. The Bulldogs utilized three offensive touchdowns and a field goal to jump out to a 24-7 first half lead. With about 9:30 left to play in the second quarter, Georgia's punt unit was able to extend the lead to 19 points. The Gators set up to punt with their back to the end zone. Georgia freshman Joenel Aguero ripped through the middle of the line and got his hands on the punt. The ball bounced out of the end zone for a safety.

Neither team scored over the last nine minutes of the first half, though Georgia remains in firm control. The Bulldogs' defense locked down after allowing a touchdown on the opening drive of the game. Florida had 20 total yards in the second quarter, including -9 yards rushing.

Notre Dame up after two

Half: No. 14 Notre Dame 17, Pittsburgh 0

Pittsburgh's offense owes the defense a steak dinner. The Panthers' offense must have forgotten it actually has a game today. They put 113 total yards of offense on the board in the first half. Quarterback Christian Veilleux had two interceptions, the latter of which allowed Notre Dame to tack on a field goal near the end of the second quarter. This despite the fact that Pitt's defense set the offense up in some really favorable situations.

The Panthers were able to intercept Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman twice. The Panthers also forced  a turnover on downs on their own 36-yard line, forcing some sort of turnover on each of Notre Dame's first three drives. And Pitt doesn't have any points to show for it, while the Irish have a special teams touchdown and running back Audric Estime to thank for their lead.

Georgia shakes off slow start

End 1Q: No. 1 Georgia 10, Florida 7

Florida struck early against Georgia, taking its first drive of the game 66 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Graham Mertz hit a crossing wide receiver in Eugene Wilson, who took the ball 25 yards to give the Gators an early 7-0 lead. But like the Bulldogs did a week ago against Vanderbilt -- which also scored on its first possession -- they shook off a slow start and eventually captured momentum.

Georgia kicked a field goal on its first offensive drive and then held the Gators to a punt. Five plays later, UGA quarterback Carson Beck hit wide receiver Ladd McConkey for a 41-yard score to give Georgia a lead. Florida does have the ball, and is driving, to start the second quarter. It's on the Gators to respond.

Notre Dame leads after ugly first quarter

End 1Q: Notre dame 7, Pittsburgh 0

It wasn't a pretty first quarter for Notre Dame, but the Irish exit the first 15 minutes with a lead nonetheless thanks to a stellar special teams play. With just over seven minutes to play, Chris Tyree fielded a punt at Notre Dame's 18-yard line. He immediately broke two tackles, plowed through a crowd of blockers and special teams gunners and burst into the open field. From there, he used his speed to finish the play and take the kick 82 yards to the house.

Otherwise, the Irish looked rough -- particularly on offense. Quarterback Sam Hartman completed nine of his 12 pass attempts for 104 yards, but also had two interceptions. The Irish also rushed seven times for just 12 yards.

Leonard gets start for Duke

Duke started quarterback Riley Leonard Saturday against Louisville. Leonard, who missed a game against NC State a few weeks ago, returned last week against Florida State but left in the middle of the third quarter when he re-aggravated a nagging ankle injury. He was listed as questionable all week, with backup quarterback Henry Belin IV available for his second career start, but Leonard was first off the bench on Duke's game-opening drive. He even rushed for a 12-yard gain.

Florida State keeps rolling

Final: No. 4 Florida State 41, Wake Forest 16

Wake Forest kept its undefeated season rolling with a big win against Wake Forest Saturday. The Seminoles scored 31 points over the last three quarters, including 24 in the third quarter, to keep a comfortable distance between them and the Demon Deacons. Quarterback Jordan Travis led all passers with 22 completions for 359 yards and three touchdowns. He also finished second on the Seminoles with 29 yards rushing and one touchdown.

Meanwhile, Florida State's defense allowed just 210 total yards. The Demon Deacons had just four drives end in Florida State territory. The Seminoles are the only undefeated team remaining in the ACC. They have another road game next week against Pitt before a tough final few weeks, featuring tests against Miami and Florida.

High stakes again between Ducks, Utes

Between No. 8 Oregon and No. 13 Utah, one of the two will have suffered a second loss of the season by the end of Saturday, likely eliminating any chance of a College Football Playoff berth. The path to the Pac-12 Championship Game also becomes significantly harder for the team suffering that fate. There have been some compelling matchups between these foes in recent years and this one shouldn't be much different. Each of the past four Pac-12 titles have been captured by Oregon or Utah -- the Ducks repeated from 2019-20 before Utes won the conference each of the past two seasons. They twice met in the Pac-12 Championship Game in that stretch. Oregon beat Utah in 2019 before the Utes returned the favor in 2021.

Ewers-less Longhorns host BYU

No. 7 Texas is making a quarterback change Saturday as it hosts BYU, giving Maalik Murphy the nod after starter Quinn Ewers suffered a shoulder injury during the Longhorns' Week 8 win at Houston. Though Murphy will get the start, the nation will also be watching to see if five-star freshman Arch Manning sees action for the first time in a Texas uniform. This is the first conference matchup between the Longhorns and Cougars, who met five times previously. Somewhat surprisingly, BYU owns a 4-1 all-time edge in the series with Texas, sweeping a pair of home-and-homes contested between the programs. The Longhorns' lone win against the Cougars came in 2011.
