College football scores, rankings, highlights: No. 8 TCU rallies past No. 17 Kansas State, remains unbeaten

TCU keeps finding ways to win during a magical debut season under coach Sonny Dykes

No. 8 TCU appeared to be in danger of dropping its first game this season on Saturday, but the Horned Frogs staged a second epic rally in as many weeks for a 38-28 Big 12 win over No. 17 Kansas State. TCU entered the game already battled tested, having come from 17 points down to beat No. 11 Oklahoma State 43-40 in two overtimes in Week 7. Down 18 points to the Wildcats in the second quarter, the Horned Frogs scored critical touchdowns on back-to-back possessions going into, and coming out of, halftime. 

Finding ways to win is paying off. TCU remains undefeated and in command of the Big 12 Championship Game race under first-year coach Sonny Dykes. 

Behind the strong running of Kendre Miller and veteran quarterback play of Max Duggan, the Horned Frogs scored 28 unanswered points to close the game. Miller ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries, and Duggan threw for 280 yards and three touchdowns as the Horned Frogs improved to 7-0 (4-0 Big 12). Without the rally, TCU would have joined No. 7 Ole Miss, No. 9 UCLA  and No. 14 Syracuse as previously unbeaten teams that suffered their first defeats during Week 8.

Some injury luck has contributed to TCU's success, too. Kansas State played nearly the entire game without star quarterback Adrian Martinez, who left the game due to injury in the first quarter. Martinez was quietly having a stellar season, and his status will loom large for the Wildcats (5-2, 3-1) as they try to remain firmly in the hunt for the Big 12 title.

Horned Frogs win again

Final: TCU 38, Kansas State 28

TCU rallies from a 28-10 deficit to score 28 unanswered against Kansas State to stay unbeaten. Another big performance from Max Duggan, but Kendre Miller was huge on the ground with 153 yards and two touchdowns. The injury to Adrian Martinez casts a "what if" pall over the game for Kansas State, but backup Will Howard certainly started out hot before TCU's defense stepped up.

Mid 4Q: TCU 38, Kansas State 28

TCU has scored 28 unanswered and has the football with a chance to shut the door and remain among the dwindling number of undefeated teams still standing. The injury to Adrian Martinez early is obviously a huge factor in this score, but the K-State defense really hasn't had much answer for Kendre Miller and Max Duggan.

Penn State back in form

Final: Penn State 45, Minnesota 17

What a bounce back for Penn State after it was clobbered by Michigan last week. The Nittany Lions gave their "white-out" crowd something to cheer about as they re-established the run and got some big plays in the throw game following a sleepy first quarter. Good way to reset ahead of a showdown with No. 2 Ohio State next week.

Authoritative bounce back

Final: Alabama 30, Mississippi State 6

Alabama never gave Mississippi State a chance. The Bulldogs got a garbage time score late in the fourth quarter, but this one was all Bama as the Crimson Tide bounce back from last week's loss at Tennessee. The Crimson Tide were penalized just three times tonight for only 20 yards after undisciplined play hindered it last week.

Texas A&M QB situation

With Max Johnson already out, the Aggies were relying on Haynes King, who had been unable to keep the job earlier this season. Now, with Texas A&M trailing 24-21 in the fourth quarter at South Carolina, the Aggies may have to turn to true freshman Conner Weigman. He was a five-star prospect, so don't feel too bad for Jimbo Fisher.

Penn State pulling away?

Late 3Q: Penn State 31, Minnesota 10

The Golden Gopher are in trouble after Penn State puts up 14 unanswered to begin the third quarter. The latest score came off a Ji'Ayir Brown interception that set the Nittany Lions up in nice field position. Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton have been much more effective on the ground tonight than against Michigan and Sean Clifford has settled in nicely as well.

SEC snoozer

Start 4Q: Alabama 24, Mississippi State 0

Alabama has punted on four straight possessions but still maintains a big lead thanks to its dominant defense. Mississippi State has seen three drives end with a turnover on downs and has yet to surpass 200 total yards. The Crimson Tide are squashing the air raid tonight, much like they have done in two previous meetings with Leach's Bulldogs.

Wildcats leading in Fort Worth

Half: Kansas State 28, TCU 17

Despite losing Adrian Martinez in the first half, Kansas State is rolling through a half in Fort Worth. Backup Will Howard has completed 9 of 11 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Deuce Vaughn broke off a 47-yard touchdown. TCU quarterback Max Duggan has thrown for 153 yards and two touchdowns, but the Frogs are struggling to put together consistent offense against a physical Kansas State defense.

Good one in Happy Valley

Half: Penn State 17, Minnesota 10

The offenses came alive a bit in that second quarter after a 3-0 start marked by several punts. Minnesota went 90 yards on nine plays, cutting it to 17-10 just before half. Big drive for the Gophers, who are operating with backup Athan Kaliakmanis in for the injured Tanner Morgan. Nice close to the first half for his counterpart Sean Clifford, who needed some momentum as he tries to fend off highly touted freshman Drew Allar.

Bama up big

Half: Alabama 24, Mississippi State 0

The Crimson Tide made a nice statement in the first half, scoring on four straight possessions at one point and coming up big defensively a few times. Mississippi State entered ranked No. 2 nationally in red-zone touchdown percentage but is 0-for-1 in the red zone today. Bulldogs had a couple of drives stopped by failed fourth-down attempts. Bryce Young is 15 of 20 for 174 yards and two TDs.

'Cats up on TCU

2Q: Kansas State 14, TCU 10

Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez went out with an undisclosed injury, but backup Will Howard is playing the best football of his career. Howard has completed all five touchdowns for 130 yards and both thrown and rushed for a score to give the Wildcats a lead in Fort Worth. TCU quarterback Max Duggan connected with Derius Davis for a 65-yard touchdown, but the Frogs need to respond.

Defensive slugfest

End 1Q: Minnesota 3, Penn State 0

If the Iowa performance wasn't enough for you, tune in to Minnesota at Penn State, which featured some offensive ineptitude in the first quarter. Both teams punted twice in the quarter, and the only points came after Minnesota lost three yards and kicked a field goal following a big interception return from Justin Walley. Just four total first downs in the first quarter as Athan Kaliakmanis starts at QB for Minnesota in place of the injured Tanner Morgan.

Oklahoma State holds off Texas

Final: Oklahoma State 41, Texas 34

This was a frustrating loss for the Longhorns. They had a 10-point lead late in the third quarter, and they totaled 14 penalties for 119 yards. It was an especially long day for quarterback Quinn Ewers, who threw for 319 yards but was inefficient in the process. Ewers completed just 19 of 49 pass attempts and threw more interceptions (3) than touchdowns (2). On the other sideline, Oklahoma State has to be thrilled with the way it battled back, and with the way its defense gave Ewers all kinds of problems. The Cowboys are still in the mix atop the Big 12 standings.

LSU takes down No. 7 Ole Miss

Final: LSU 45, Ole Miss 20

Another top-10 team has fallen today. The Rebels jumped out to a 17-3 lead over the Tigers early in the second quarter, but LSU showed a lot of poise to reset and out-scored Ole Miss 42-3 the rest of the way. Jayden Daniels played his best game in an LSU uniform to date. He threw for 248 yards, rushed for 121 more, and totaled five touchdowns. The Tigers' defense also deserves a lot of credit for shutting down the Rebels after that tough first quarter. Now, LSU is very much in the race to win the SEC West.

Oregon makes statement with top-10 win over UCLA

Final: Oregon 45, UCLA 30

That Week 1 blowout loss to Georgia seems like it was about five years ago for Oregon. The Ducks have continued to improve under first-year head coach Dan Lanning, and it resulted in an impressive win over a formerly undefeated UCLA team. One of the biggest stories for Oregon throughout this run has been the play of quarterback Bo Nix, and he delivered in a big moment today. Nix completed 22 of 28 passing attempts for 283 yards, five touchdowns, and no interceptions. The Ducks have forced their way back into the College Football Playoff conversation.

Wake Forest steamrolls Boston College

Final: Wake Forest 43, Boston College 15

The Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, and it was all Deacon Demons from there. Once the Wake Forest offense got rolling, Boston College had no answers. Demon Deacons quarterback Sam Hartman got whatever he wanted and finished the day with 313 passing yards and five touchdowns. No. 13 Wake Forest will continue to hang around the top 10 of the rankings after this conference beatdown.

Getting snug late in Stillwater

Start of 4Q: Texas 34, Oklahoma State 27

With one quarter remaining, Texas and Oklahoma State seem headed for a dramatic finish. After the offenses stole the show in the first half, the defenses held up their end of the bargain in the third quarter. The Longhorns and Cowboys exchanged field goals, and we have a one-score game with 15 minutes remaining. This game could very well come down to which side has the ball last.

Big Ten injury news

Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan will not play tonight's game against No. 16 Penn State in State College, Pennsylvania. It's a huge blow to an offense, and put even more pressure on the Golden Gophers' rushing attack led by Mohamed Ibrahim.

Daniels doing it all for LSU

Q4: LSU 24, No. 7 Ole Miss 20

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels has progressively improved throughout the year, and he's doing it all for the Tigers on Saturday afternoon. The Arizona State transfer has 218 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, 58 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown as they head to the final frame in Death Valley. Daniels' third touchdown pass of the game --  a one-yarder to tight end Mason Taylor that gave them a four-point lead -- was the only score of the third quarter.

Oregon is making a massive statement

Q4: No. 10 Oregon 38, No. 9 UCLA 16

The Ducks are absolutely rolling against the undefeated Bruins, and it's been primarily on the arm of quarterback Bo Nix. The Auburn transfer has thrown more touchdown passes (4) than incompletions (3), and has added 34 more yards on the ground in what has been a statement game for the Ducks. It seems like the college football world forgot about Dan Lanning's crew after the season-opening loss to Georgia, but this is a reminder of just how good they can be when they are clicking.

Bijan Robinson leads Longhorns

Half: No. 20 Texas 31, No. 11 Oklahoma State 24

Texas running back Bijan Robinson is showing why he's one of the best running backs in the country in the Longhorns' game at Oklahoma State. The veteran has 13 carries for 93 yards and a 42-yard touchdown run to help his team jump out to the lead at the break. Longhorns' quarterback Quinn Ewers is making his first road start against the Cowboys, and he has had an up-and-down afternoon. He has only completed 11 of his 24 passes, but has 190 yards and two touchdowns in Stillwater. It'll be interesting to see what Oklahoma State does to shut down Robinson and put more pressure on Ewers in the second half. That could be what makes or breaks this game for Mike Gundy's squad.

Ole Miss up at the half

Half: No. 7 Ole Miss 20, LSU 17

The Rebels jumped out to a 17-3 lead early in the second quarter, but the homestanding Tigers didn't panic. Jaden Daniels tossed a 34-yard touchdown pass to Jaray Jenkins and followed it up with a three-yard score after a seven-play drive to make it a field goal game at the break. Daniels is 12 of 15 for 164 yards, one touchdown, 13 carries, 42 rushing yards and the rushing touchdown in what has been an impressive follow-up to his six-touchdown performance last week vs. Florida.

Oregon up at halftime

Half: No. 10 Oregon 31, No. 9 UCLA 13

The biggest Pac-12 game of the year has been dominated by one of the league's traditional powers. Ducks quarterback Bo Nix has 202 yards passing, three touchdowns through the air and has added 24 yards on the ground in what was a dominating offensive performance. The defense hasn't been half bad either. The Ducks held Bruins' quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson under 100 yards passing in the half, and the Bruins managed just 185 total yards over the first 30 minutes. The weather has been nice so far, but rain appears to be on the way in Eugene. It'll be interesting to see what adjustments are made on both sides if the downpour hits in the second half.

Ole Miss cruising early

Q2: No. 7 Ole Miss 14, LSU 3

The seventh-ranked Rebels aren't having any issues against the Tigers defense. Quarterback Jaxson Dart has 156 yards passing and running back Quinshon Judkins has both of their touchdowns to jump out to a big lead in Death Valley. The teams flipped sides with Ole Miss in the red zone in what has been total domination by Lane Kiffin's crew.

Oregon jumps out front

14:56 Q2: No. 10 Oregon 10, No. 9 UCLA 3

Quarterback Bo Nix hit Terrance Ferguson for a 17-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter to give the Ducks the lead over undefeated UCLA in Eugene. That capped off a 10-play, 71-yard drive in which Oregon owned the line of scrimmage against the physical Bruins front seven. This is the new-school Pac-12 at its best. Both of these teams have beefed up inside, which has made this a line of scrimmage game.

Miami commits eight turnovers in loss to Duke

Final: Duke 45, Miami 21

The honeymoon might be over for Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal. His Hurricanes turned the ball over eight times -- the most a Power Five team has had since 2009 -- in what was the worst loss to the Blue Devils in series history. To make matters worse, quarterback Tyler Van Dyke left the game with an injured shoulder in the first half and was replaced by Jake Garcia, who threw two touchdowns and three interceptions. Duke quarterback Riley Leonard was the star of the show, throwing for 136 yards one touchdown through the air, while adding 61 rushing yards and three scores on the ground.

Cincinnati escapes Dallas with a win

Final: Cincinnati 29, SMU 27

No. 21 Cincinnati jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first half but nearly let it slip away by the end of the game. The Mustangs managed to hold the Bearcats to field goals for the rest of the game, and they were a two-point conversion away from forcing overtime on the final possession. Cincinnati just survived one of its biggest tests of the season and is now 6-1 with a 3-0 record in the AAC.

Hendon Hooker's Heisman campaign continues

Final: No. 3 Tennessee 65, UT-Martin 24

Volunteers quarterback Hendon Hooker's Heisman Trophy campaign cranked into high gear last week against Alabama, and there wasn't much of a hangover Saturday afternoon against the Skyhawks. Hooker threw for 276 yards, tossed three touchdowns and added 28 yards on the ground in the win. Are voters going to take much from a win over an FCS opponent? Probably not. But Hooker didn't seem to miss a beat.

Clemson survives

Final: No. 5 Clemson 27, No. 14 Syracuse

Freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik came in for an ineffective DJ Uiagalelei in the second half, and the former blue chip recruit made a huge difference in Clemson's comeback win over the Orange. The Tigers had 17-straight fourth-quarter points to top Garrett Shrader and an Orange crew that did all that they could to spring the upset. Tigers running back Will Shipley had a 50-yard scamper to give Clemson the lead with 11:26 left in what ended up being the game-winning score.

Ohio State cruises

Final: No. 2 Ohio State 54, Iowa 10

The Hawkeyes went up 3-0 early in Saturday's matchup vs. the Buckeyes ... and then the wheels fell off. The Buckeyes, led by quarterback CJ Stroud's four touchdown passes, had no issues dealing with a Hawkeyes defense that got worn down as the game rolled on. One of Stroud's touchdown passes was an absolute dime to Marvin Harrison Jr. Check this one out ...
