Kentucky vs. North Carolina score: Wildcats hold off Tar Heels to win blue-blood battle in CBS Sports Classic

No. 14 Kentucky picked up its biggest win of the season so far, going nearly wire-to-wire in a 87-83 win against No. 9 North Carolina in the CBS Sports Classic in Atlanta on Saturday. The Wildcats led for more than 37 minutes of the game but the relentlessness from the Tar Heels kept the result in doubt until the final minute, with a young Kentucky team playing far beyond its years to secure the victory.

Kentucky's top four scorers were all freshmen, with Rob Dillingham pacing the group with 17 points and D.J. Wagner (14 points), Reed Sheppard (11 points) and Aaron Bradshaw (12 points) answering the call in key minutes against a veteran-led North Carolina side. Not all of those freshmen are starters, which contributed to the notable 36-14 bench points advantage that Kentucky held at the end of the game.

North Carolina made multiple charges in a game where it was chasing basically the entire night, and RJ Davis had yet another impressive performance to add to his run of high-scoring performances with 27 points on 8-for-18 shooting. But this was a North Carolina team that had just four players with more than eight points while Kentucky had seven, and combined with the bench points it revealed something impactful about the game.

In a matchup between two blue bloods on a big stage, Kentucky had more players rise the level of the moment than North Carolina.

That's a credit to John Calipari and his staff for preparing Kentucky to be ready for the moment when previously the best win on the profile was against unranked Miami. And while the Kentucky coach has gotten some attention for modernizing his approach with a team that's taking more 3-pointers, there was something very old school Coach Cal about seeing him trust a talented core of freshmen in key moments against one of the toughest opponents on the schedule.

Kentucky and UNC  will move forward in their respective conferences with plenty left to play for regardless of wins or losses. But what we've learned about both teams — particularly Kentucky's rotation depth and versatility — will be a factor for the rest of the season and something to note when we start to prepare for the most impactful games of the season in March.

RJ Davis continues his hot streak

Davis has five consecutive games with 25+ points after going for 27 against Kentucky. He's scored 160 points over the last six games, and become just fourth player in North Carolina history to have 26+ points in five straight games. Davis also added seven rebounds and four assists in 38 minutes of work, and while the depth that North Carolina flashed in wins over Arkansas and Tennessee didn't quite show up in the same way against Kentucky, the Tar Heels sure got the same level of production from its senior guard and arguably one of the team's most important players.

Coach Cal has UNC's number (when the Tar Heels are a top-10 team)

With the 87-83 win, John Calipari has improved to 6-1 against North Carolina since he arrived at Kentucky when facing a Tar Heels team that's ranked in the top-10 of the AP Top 25 poll. All six of this wins have been by single digits and four of them have been by four points or less, a result that reflects well on the Wildcats coach. Of course, the one loss in that run happened to be one of the most impactful of the series as a Luke Maye dagger bounced Kentucky from the NCAA Tournament in the Elite Eight en route to a North Carolina national championship in the 2017 season.

Kentucky's rookies making it happen

3:44 2H: Kentucky 77, North Carolina 72

Just after Kentucky had given up the lead for the first time in the entire game, the Wildcats respond with a 6-0 run coming up with buckets on three consecutive possessions. And all of this is happening with a lineup that has four freshmen on the floor at the same time for John Calipari's squad. These are not all the starters, which contributes to the 33-14 bench points advantage for Kentucky in the game so far, but they are the players that Coach Cal is counting on to make winning plays against one of the best teams the Wildcats have played so far this season.

Tar Heels refuse to go away

7:56 2H: Kentucky 67, North Carolina 62

North Carolina has made each of its last four shots to climb back into the game once again, cutting the lead down to three before a pair of free throws by Antonio Reeves just before the under-8 media timeout. R.J. Davis might have had a slow start but the senior guard who has delivered in each of the last five games has once again stepped up with big buckets in the second half and now has 17 points heading into the final minutes of the game.

Kentucky's bench proving to be the difference

11:41 2H: Kentucky 60, North Carolina 51

Feels like we've got a crucial couple of minute coming up from State Farm Arena, as this will be North Carolina last chance to really climb back into the game. The problem that the Tar Heels are dealing with is a disadvantage in depth, at least for the game, with Kentucky holding a 25-to-11 advantage in bench points. The Wildcats have eight players with at least five points in the game while the number for North Carolina is four.

Kentucky turns the tables

15:43 2H: Kentucky 52, North Carolina 43

A 12-3 run but he Wildcats has helped put a stop to any momentum North Carolina gained near the end of the first half as Kentucky has reestablished its upper hand in the game. Reed Sheppard, Antonio Reeves, even D.J. Wagner have stepped up in the early minutes as John Calipari's depth seems to be on full display in this battle of blue bloods. Kentucky has a high-end top eight with lots of different ways for the Wildcats to beat you, and North Carolina is learning that lesson the hard way here in Atlanta.

UNC's late charge makes it a one-score game at half

HALF: Kentucky 40, North Carolina 38

The Tar Heels closed the first half on an 8-0 run to take what had been a half mostly dominated by Kentucky and reset the game with just a two-point advantage for the Wildcats. Kentucky missed each of its last six shots while North Carolina got a couple of timely three-pointers from Cormac Ryan and Seth Trimble. Kentucky started the game shooting well over 50 percent from the field but at hafltime their 34% shooting is inferior to the Tar Heels halftime checkpoint of 42%.

When you consider the way that North Carolina finished, it further brings to light how impactful the Tar Heel turnovers were early in the half. Kentucky has scored 14 points off 11 Tar Heel turnovers, and UNC big man Armando Bacot is responsible for four of those turnovers. If North Carolina can clean up its offense, it has a chance to get its first lead of the game in the early minutes of the second half.

Reed Sheppard shooting Kentucky out of a slump

3:45 1H: Kentucky 37, North Carolina 29

Kentucky freshman Reed Sheppard is one of the most efficient shooters in the country and he's stepped up in a huge spot to get the Wildcats out of mid-half offensive drought with a couple of huge buckets. Sheppard is now up to 7 points for the game on 3-of-4 shooting after a key three-pointer to extend the Wildcats lead.

Tar Heels climbing back into the game

7:57 1H: Kentucky 26, North Carolina 20

North Carolina has made three straight shots while Kentucky has made just 1 of its last 9, and a couple huge buckets from Cormac Ryan have the Tar Heels very much in the game despite a poor start and at one point an 11-point deficit. Ryan leads all North Carolina scorers with 9 points while no one else on the team has more than 3, and Kentucky has had a few defensive breakdowns after what was a dialed-in start to defending a UNC roster with multiple versatile scores.

Kentucky defense answering the call

10:24 1H: Kentucky 22, North Carolina 13

For a game that had an over-under in the betting markets of over 160, there sure has been a lot of defense through the first 9-plus minutes of play. A lot of those defensive stops are coming courtesy of Kentucky, with has three steals and two blocks while limiting the Tar Heels to just two second chance points. And for what it's worth, the live odds still have a total over 160 so while the Wildcats defense is off to a strong start the expectation is that the current pace won't continue for the Tar Heels.

Strong start for Kentucky

15:17 1H: Kentucky 9, North Carolina 4

The Wildcats have gotten the energy needed for a strong start in "Catlanta" as Kentucky has raced out to an early lead on 57% shooting (4-of-7) and never tailed to establish an early lead at the under-16 timeout. Big man Aaron Bradshaw has been a highlight early, which is key in this matchup considering he's battling for real estate in the paint against Armando Bacot.

Sharp shooting Sheppard

Kentucky freshman Reed Sheppard is averaging 13.0 points per game so far this season but it's his absurd shooting percentage that has really drawn attention during the Wildcats' start to the season. The raw numbers are excellent — 61.2% from the field, 59.0% from three — but according to KenPom Sheppard's effective field goal percentage (78.4%) and true shooting percentage (80%) are the best in the nation. Also, he's not too shabby on the defensive end currently leading the SEC and ranking 7th in the country averaging 3.0 steals per game.

UNC G RJ Davis on a heater

Davis is averaging 21.0 points on the season but in the last five games he's averaging 26.6 thanks to huge performances against Villanova (23), Arkansas (30), Tennessee (27), Florida State (27) and UConn (26). It's the most points scored over five games by a North Carolina player since Tyler Hansbrough in 2008, the year he was named the national player of the year. Davis is also climbing his way up the program's all-time scoring list, needing just seven points to become the 33rd Tar Heels with 1,500 career points.

Elite company for Kentucky freshman Rob Dillingham

Coming into Saturday's game against North Carolina, Rob Dillingham is averaging 14.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.9 assistant per game. According to CBS Sports Research, Dillingham is on pace to join an exclusive club of Kentucky freshmen in the John Calipari era as the only other players to average at least 14 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists as a rookie under Coach Cal are John Wall (2009-10), Brandon Knight (2010-11) and Shai Gilgeous Alexander (2017-18).

ACC's best scoring offense takes the floor

North Carolina is averaging 85.1 points per game, which is the best in the ACC and ranks in the top 25 nationally. Additionally, the Tar Heels are shooting 35.9% from three this season, which is the best percentage since Hubert Davis took over from Roy Williams and the programs best percentage since the 2018-19 season. Making threes and getting to the free throw line have been a huge key for this UNC team, as the Tar Heels are averaging 28 free throw attempts per game and making 21.2 of those on average.

A new-look to Kentucky offense

The Wildcats are averaging 25.8 three-point attempts per game so far this season, which is the most in the John Caliper era. The previous high was 19.1 during the 2020-21 season, which was a team that went 9-16 and missed the NCAA Tournament. That's clearly not the course most are expecting this year, as the 2023-24 Wildcats are connecting on 41.4% of those three-point attempts, which ranks fourth in the nation.
