Most relevant college basketball players doubling as fringe NBA prospects who have announced they're entering the draft — like Houston's Marcus Sasser, Arkansas' Jaylin Williams, Gonzaga's Drew Timme, Michigan State's Max Christie, Indiana's Trayce Jackson-Davis, Colorado State's David Roddy, etc., — have done so while making it clear they're also maintaining their eligibility and thus leaving open the option to return to school for another season.
I suspect most of them will.
But USC's Isaiah Mobley decided to leave himself no such option. The 6-foot-10 forward announced this weekend that he's done with college basketball for good even though he's unlikely to be selected in the first round of the 2022 NBA Draft and a decent candidate to actually go unselected. It's a development that will cost the Trojans their leading scorer and rebounder — and, at least for now, their spot in Version 2.0 of the 2022-23 CBS Sports Preseason Top 25 And 1.
USC has been replaced by Oregon.
UCLA remains No. 1 in the Top 25 And 1 based on the idea that multiyear starters Johnny Juzang, Jamie Jaquez and Tyger Campbell will each return and be joined by a top-10 recruiting class highlighted by 5-star prospects Amari Bailey and Adem Bona. That kind of roster configuration would give Bruins coach Mick Cronin, who has been to back-to-back Sweet 16s, a terrific blend of legitimate NBA talent and the type of proven experience it often takes to win a national championship. Now it's just a matter of seeing whether things unfold that way for UCLA or if the Bruins, like USC, lose a fringe NBA prospect (or two) early.
