2022 March Madness scores: Upsets over Kentucky, Iowa highlight wild Thursday in Round 1 of NCAA Tournament

On the first day of the 2022 NCAA Tournament, March Madness lived up to its name. Just ask Saint Peter's, which became the 10th No. 15 seed to knock off a No. 2 after out-shooting Kentucky 85-79 in overtime.

Kentucky's loss — the Wildcats were 18.5-point favorites — stands out as one of the top five upsets vs. the spread since the NCAA Tournament field expanded in 1985. And Kentucky wasn't alone; the infamous 5-12 game produced two winners in New Mexico State and Richmond over UConn and Iowa, respectively. A seed-line down, No. 11 seed Michigan topped No. 6 seed Colorado State for another upset.

But favorites triumphed in other games. No. 1 seeds Gonzaga, Kansas and Baylor advanced, while No. 4 seeds Arkansas, UCLA and Providence all survived upset bids of varying degrees. Gonzaga will now match up with No. 9 seed Memphis, one of the nation's hottest teams over the last month and a half, after the Tigers held off a late charge from Boise State. Kansas draws a No. 9 seed in Creighton that outlasted San Diego State in overtime. And Baylor plays a non-typical No. 8 seed in North Carolina that Marquette coach Shaka Smart called "dangerous" after the Tar Heels routed the Golden Eagles.

In the same East Region, Saint Mary's rolled over a fatigued Indiana team, while the bottom part of the bracket will see either Saint Peter's or Murray State go to the Sweet 16, after the latter defeated San Francisco in overtime.

Per Stat Broadcast, Colorado State -- which is trailing Michigan now -- is 4-of-12 on shots that qualified as "layups" today.

Providence is on the cusp of possibly blowing this one out against South Dakota State.

It's 43-29 with over 15 minutes to play in the second half.

Michigan did not make a 3-pointer in the first half, while Colorado State made eight (!).

CSU now cooled off and UMich is getting hot. Tide starting to turn in Indy.

HOUSTAN HEAT CHECK! Made 3s on consecutive possessions gives Michigan its largest lead of the day over Colorado State, 53-49.

Caleb Houstan with two HUGE 3s in the second half for Michigan. He again gives Michigan an edge, as it leads 50-49 with just under 10 to play.

Multi-screen time

With the second half of Providence and San Diego State getting ready to begin, Michigan and Colorado entering the home stretch of a great game and Memphis-Boise State about to tip, you better have your multi-screen setup ready.

Michigan leads. Its first of the game as it goes up 45-44.

Caleb Houstan with a big corner 3 for Michigan to get the Wolverines to within a point. They've been chasing all day. Absence of DeVante' Jones still looming large for them, but credit to them for keeping this close even as Colorado State has played very well on the whole.

Providence leading by eight at the half

South Dakota State trails No. 4 seed Providence 31-23 at the half. The Jackrabbits, the top 3-point shooting team in the country, were held by the Friars to only two makes from beyond the arc in the first half. Don't think SDSU was prepared for the physicality of Providence, either.

Al Durham with a team-high 9 points for the Friars at half. Jackrabbits star Baylor Scheirman with 10 points and six boards.

CSU up 7

Half: Colorado State 36, Michigan 29

All things considered, Michigan may feel fortunate to be down only 7 points after CSU led 28-13 with 5:09 to play. Wolverines hit their final four shots of the half to change the complexion of this game entering the break. Michigan has a 22-8 edge in paint points but is 0 for 7 from 3-point range. CSU is 8 of 20 from deep. What a contrast.

Providence-SDSU underway

The game that ranks No. 2 in my 1-32 ranking of the first round is underway on truTV: "When Providence plays basketball, it's usually a close game. When South Dakota State plays, it's usually a high-scoring game. Mix it all together and what do you get? A close, high-scoring game with upset potential. Yes, please. The Friars are only a two-point favorite, so while the seedings suggest they should win big, all signs point toward a thriller. This is just the second game of the entire NCAA Tournament, and its finish should be unencumbered by other notable action -- unless you are dead set on seeing the first half of Baylor vs. Norfolk State."

CSU up early

Neither team is dazzling on the offensive end, but Colorado State has a 20-13 lead at the u8 timeout. 4 of 12 from deep for the Rams vs. an 0-5 mark from 3-point range for Michigan. Hunter Dickinson has 8 of the Wolverines' 13. He'll need some perimeter assistance if the Wolverines are going to have a shot.

Michigan is without starting point guard DeVante' Jones today. Did not make the trek to Indy because he is in concussion protocol. Colorado State taking advantage early with a 14-7 lead five minutes into play.
