2022 March Madness scores: Upsets over Kentucky, Iowa highlight wild Thursday in Round 1 of NCAA Tournament

On the first day of the 2022 NCAA Tournament, March Madness lived up to its name. Just ask Saint Peter's, which became the 10th No. 15 seed to knock off a No. 2 after out-shooting Kentucky 85-79 in overtime.

Kentucky's loss — the Wildcats were 18.5-point favorites — stands out as one of the top five upsets vs. the spread since the NCAA Tournament field expanded in 1985. And Kentucky wasn't alone; the infamous 5-12 game produced two winners in New Mexico State and Richmond over UConn and Iowa, respectively. A seed-line down, No. 11 seed Michigan topped No. 6 seed Colorado State for another upset.

But favorites triumphed in other games. No. 1 seeds Gonzaga, Kansas and Baylor advanced, while No. 4 seeds Arkansas, UCLA and Providence all survived upset bids of varying degrees. Gonzaga will now match up with No. 9 seed Memphis, one of the nation's hottest teams over the last month and a half, after the Tigers held off a late charge from Boise State. Kansas draws a No. 9 seed in Creighton that outlasted San Diego State in overtime. And Baylor plays a non-typical No. 8 seed in North Carolina that Marquette coach Shaka Smart called "dangerous" after the Tar Heels routed the Golden Eagles.

In the same East Region, Saint Mary's rolled over a fatigued Indiana team, while the bottom part of the bracket will see either Saint Peter's or Murray State go to the Sweet 16, after the latter defeated San Francisco in overtime.

Thursday is here!

The first round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament is finally here. Michigan and Colorado State up first on CBS. It ranks in the middle of the pack of my full 1-32 ranking of the best games of the first round: "Punching its way through this pod is going to be tough for Michigan because of the unique matchup problem presented by Colorado State's David Roddy. Typically, "unicorn" in basketball parlance has referred to a centers who can shoot 3-pointers and defend on the perimeter. They're less rare nowadays, though, so perhaps the term should now apply to players like Roddy. At 6-foot-5 and 252 pounds, he is supremely athletic, yet also a legit human wrecking ball."

Of note: Michigan point guard Devante' Jones unavailable due to concussion protocol.
