2022 March Madness scores: Upsets over Kentucky, Iowa highlight wild Thursday in Round 1 of NCAA Tournament

On the first day of the 2022 NCAA Tournament, March Madness lived up to its name. Just ask Saint Peter's, which became the 10th No. 15 seed to knock off a No. 2 after out-shooting Kentucky 85-79 in overtime.

Kentucky's loss — the Wildcats were 18.5-point favorites — stands out as one of the top five upsets vs. the spread since the NCAA Tournament field expanded in 1985. And Kentucky wasn't alone; the infamous 5-12 game produced two winners in New Mexico State and Richmond over UConn and Iowa, respectively. A seed-line down, No. 11 seed Michigan topped No. 6 seed Colorado State for another upset.

But favorites triumphed in other games. No. 1 seeds Gonzaga, Kansas and Baylor advanced, while No. 4 seeds Arkansas, UCLA and Providence all survived upset bids of varying degrees. Gonzaga will now match up with No. 9 seed Memphis, one of the nation's hottest teams over the last month and a half, after the Tigers held off a late charge from Boise State. Kansas draws a No. 9 seed in Creighton that outlasted San Diego State in overtime. And Baylor plays a non-typical No. 8 seed in North Carolina that Marquette coach Shaka Smart called "dangerous" after the Tar Heels routed the Golden Eagles.

In the same East Region, Saint Mary's rolled over a fatigued Indiana team, while the bottom part of the bracket will see either Saint Peter's or Murray State go to the Sweet 16, after the latter defeated San Francisco in overtime.

CBS Sports was here with the latest from every Round 1 game. Keep scrolling past the schedule below for scores and analysis from one off the best days of the year in American sports.

Longwood looks legit

How is that for some alliteration? Seriously, though, the Lancers are hanging tough vs. Tennessee early and don't seem overwhelmed by the Volunteers' athleticism. The other two games going now are not close, so maybe keep an eye on regular CBS and a No. 3 seed in Tennessee who could find itself in a fight here.

Goodness, Memphis

The Tigers played 12, TWELVE, guys in the first half while opening up a 38-19 lead on Boise State. Among them was Emoni Bates, who has been out for several weeks. Penny Hardaway seems intent on using his team's depth and athleticism to his advantage in this one. Fresh legs against on Gonzaga on Saturday would be helpful.

Providence advances

Final: Providence 66, South Dakota State 57

The Friars got a game from South Dakota State, which showed some resilience in rallying from a 14 point deficit to make it close in the end. But as has been the case all season, Providence handled business in the end. Friars will play the winner of Iowa and Richmond in the second round. No single player for Providence stood out and there were no overwhelming statistical advantages. Just a good team playing good ball and picking up a good win.

Michigan closes it out

Nice win for Michigan without Devante' Jones. Wolverines will get the winner of Tennessee-Longwood on Saturday. In other news: Providence is on the cusp of closing out South Dakota State and Memphis has an early lead on Boise State. Could we see two higher-seeded Mountain West teams lose in the first window?

Eli Brooks with a borderline dagger for Michigan. His jumper from the top of the key with about 90 seconds left lifts Michigan to a 70-60 advantage over Colorado State. There's 1:13 left.

South Dakota State hanging

It looked like Providence might be ready to blow South Dakota State out. But the Jackrabbits have hopped back into this game with a run to force a Providence timeout. Friars haven't hit a FG in over four minutes. PU still up 8 but not running away with it.
