2022 March Madness scores: Upsets over Kentucky, Iowa highlight wild Thursday in Round 1 of NCAA Tournament

On the first day of the 2022 NCAA Tournament, March Madness lived up to its name. Just ask Saint Peter's, which became the 10th No. 15 seed to knock off a No. 2 after out-shooting Kentucky 85-79 in overtime.

Kentucky's loss — the Wildcats were 18.5-point favorites — stands out as one of the top five upsets vs. the spread since the NCAA Tournament field expanded in 1985. And Kentucky wasn't alone; the infamous 5-12 game produced two winners in New Mexico State and Richmond over UConn and Iowa, respectively. A seed-line down, No. 11 seed Michigan topped No. 6 seed Colorado State for another upset.

But favorites triumphed in other games. No. 1 seeds Gonzaga, Kansas and Baylor advanced, while No. 4 seeds Arkansas, UCLA and Providence all survived upset bids of varying degrees. Gonzaga will now match up with No. 9 seed Memphis, one of the nation's hottest teams over the last month and a half, after the Tigers held off a late charge from Boise State. Kansas draws a No. 9 seed in Creighton that outlasted San Diego State in overtime. And Baylor plays a non-typical No. 8 seed in North Carolina that Marquette coach Shaka Smart called "dangerous" after the Tar Heels routed the Golden Eagles.

In the same East Region, Saint Mary's rolled over a fatigued Indiana team, while the bottom part of the bracket will see either Saint Peter's or Murray State go to the Sweet 16, after the latter defeated San Francisco in overtime.

CBS Sports was here with the latest from every Round 1 game. Keep scrolling past the schedule below for scores and analysis from one off the best days of the year in American sports.

Saint Peter's adds to the madness with another double-digit upset

It's actually happening. The 10th No. 15 seed to upset a No. 2 seed in the history of the NCAA Tournament. And it's happening to Kentucky, on CBS, here on the first full first round Thursday with fans in the stands. Incredible scenes from Indianapolis as the Wildcats are eliminated from the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

Saint Peter's ball, up 3, with 42.3 seconds left in overtime, and Kentucky's effort to create a turnover results in a FOUL! Peacocks to the line...

With a 3-point lead in OT and a review underway, this is the closest I think we've all actually come to thinking Kentucky, one of the five or six most popular picks to win the national title, was going to lose in a 15-over-2 upset.

Saint Peter's taking Kentucky to OT

14 ties, 12 lead changes and neither team has led by more than 6. This is clearly not your normal No. 2 seed vs. No. 15 seed first round game. No matter what happens in the next five (or more) minutes, Saint Peter's has brought the fight to Kentucky in a way that no one expected.

Another 12-5 upset in Buffalo

Teddy Allen finishes with 37 points, icing the win for No. 12 seed New Mexico State as they bounce No. 5 seed UConn in the same building that played host to No. 12 seed Richmond taking down No. 5 seed Iowa earlier in the day. The Aggies will advance to play the winner of Arkansas-Vermont, the night cap in West Region action in KeyBank Arena.

Teddy Allen is a hooper! Man is flexing for the cameras after picking up clutch go-ahead, and-one buckets in the final minute against UConn. New Mexico State leads 66-60 with 27.5 seconds left to go, as the Huskies are staring down a possible end to their much-anticipated 2022 run in the NCAA Tournament.

Hit the Upset Alert Siren Again

It's not just No. 5 seed UConn on the ropes against No. 12 New Mexico State (currently 56-54 Aggies, 3:55 left). No, even No. 2 seed Kentucky is in danger against No. 15 seed St. Peter's. The Wildcats just took a 61-60 lead with 6:20 left to play after trading the lead back and forth for most of the game.
