The Carolina Panthers are adding depth to their receiving corps. The team is signing former second-round pick Devin Smith to their practice squad, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The 29-year-old Smith was most recently a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. After failing to make the team's 53-man roster, Smith was signed to the Jaguars' practice squad before he was released on Oct. 12. He was active in four games for the Jaguars this season.
Smith spent the 2020 season on the Texans and Patriots' practice squads. Before that, he spent two offseasons and one full season with the Cowboys, where he caught five passes for 113 yards and a touchdown in four games during the 2019 season.
The 37th overall pick in the 2015 draft, Smith's career has been derailed by two ACL injuries. Smith tore his ACL late in the 2015 season, an injury that wiped out most of his 2016 season. He missed the entire 2017 season after suffering a tear to the same ACL. He spent the 2017 season on injured reserve before he was waived by the Jets that offseason. Smith remained unsigned during the 2018 season before being picked up by the Cowboys in January of 2019.
Smith starred during his time at Ohio State, where he helped the Buckeyes win the 2014 national championship. During Ohio State's championship run, Smith caught 12 touchdowns while averaging a whopping 28.2 yards per reception.
The Panthers' current depth at receiver includes DJ Moore, rookie Terrace Marshall Jr., Robby Anderson, Alex Erickson, and Shi Smith. After a 3-0 start, the Panthers are 3-4 on the season entering Sunday's road game against the Falcons.
